    On August 5, 1961, the first-ever Six Flags theme park opened in Arlington with only six sections to explore: Mexico, Spain, Texas, France, the ConfedeSouth) and the United States of America. The six sections represented the six nations that once governed Texas, and subsequently inspired the name oPeople visited from all over to experience animal-driven rides like the Overland Butterfield Stagecoach, a stagecoach ride pulled by horses, and Las CochCabras Goat Cart Ride, a ride pulled by a goat.

    Today, the park has expanded to include six more sections, including Gotham City, Boomtown, Goodtimes Square, Tower, Star Mall and Looney Tunesnow, as Six Flags Over Texas celebrates its 50th anniversary, the park is home to around 50 rides, including 13 roller coasters and 5 water rides.

    I visited the park and compiled a list of 50 essential things to do and places to visit in the park.

    RIDES AND THRILLS

    1. Conquistador. All hands on deck! You ll find this giant swinging boat in the Mexico and Spain section of the park, just a few minutes away from the fr The Conquistador is a Six Flags class ic. 42 to ride.

    2. Acme Rock-n-Rocket. This ride, modeled after what could be one of Wylie Coyote s crazy contraptions, makes the Conquistador look like a kid s ridAcme Rock-n-Rocket begins slow and normal, but it soon picks up speed and takes riders on a complete 360-degree spin. Find it in USA, right next to tAmerican Caf. 48 to ride.

    3. Mr. Free e . While waiting in line for most rides is hot and excruciating, waiting in line for Mr. Freeze is a breeze lit erally. You ll feel the cold air conblasts when you enter the waiting area through the mouth of a giant, curious-looking clown. And the ride itself? One of the best in the park, as it relies puspeed (70 mph, to be exact) to whip you around turns and shoot you up a 24-story vertical climb before dropping you back down to travel the ride backwa54 to ride.

    4. Batman: The Ride. Located beside his arch nemeses Mr. Freeze s coaster, Batman: The Ride visitors with a t hrilling experience. This inverted coasthave you safely secured and holding on as your feet dangle below you. Once you re seated and buckled in, you know it s time to ride when the floor dropbeneath you. Batman is full of twists, loops and corkscrews, and reaches speeds of up to 50 mph. 54 to ride.

    5. Superman: To er of Po er. Take to t he skies Superman sty le. This ride, the tallest in the park (surpassing the Oil Derrick by 25 feet), takes ridebefore dropping them straight down 325 feet. It is one of two Superman: Tower of Power rides in the nation, and the tallest of the two. 52 to ride.

    6. Runa a Mountain. This unique ride provides visitors with a one-of-a-kind experience: a rollercoaster in the dark. Built inside of a mountain, the waiof the ride is meant to resemble a mineshaft, and once you get inside, you're off into the dark. Every twist, turn and drop is a complete surprise. 48 to rid

    7. Titan. Get ready for the ride of your life as you take on the Titan, the tallest and fastest coaster in Texas. Standing 25 stories above the ground and tr speeds of 85 mph, the orange and blue coaster drops you into a tunnel before taking you on a carousel-styled turn and eventually an uphill helix. 48 to ri

    8. Te as Giant. Recently remodeled and rebuilt, the Texas Giant is a hybrid roller coaster, comprising both steel and wood. If you ever felt that the origiGiant was just too rough to ride, worry no more. The new steel track makes it just as smooth as any other roller coaster, and with a 79-degree drop of 14steepest drop of any wooden coaster in the world ), you re bound to have a blast on the new Texas Giant. 48 to ride.

    9. Te as Chute-Out. Perfect for people looking for a ride that s both exciting and relaxing. Climb into the parachute-equipped car and rise 200 feet abovebefore drifting to a gentle landing. 36 to ride with adult, 48 to ride alone.

    10. Aquaman Splashdo n. Take a dive with the master of the seas, Aquaman! Formerly known as just Splashdown, this ride is a perfect way to cool oboat climbs high into the sky and takes a refreshing and exciting plunge into the depths.     11. Dive Bomber Alley. Get your heart pumping with Dive Bomber Alley, where you ll be strapped into a harness, pulled backwards by a rope, and plunstories. 42 to ride with adult. Additional fees are required: $35 (single flyer), $25 per person (double flight), $20 per person (triple flight).

    RIDES FOR TIKES

    12. Batwing. If Batman: The Ride is a little too intense for some of the kiddos, Batwing may have what they re looking for. Eight batwing planes rise andthey spin on a circular course, providing an awesome experience for all those young flyers. No minimum height if accompanied by a parent, 48 to ride al

    13. Crazy Legs. Let loose on Crazy Legs! You ll be swinging every which way up, down and side to side on this classic ride for the kids. Load onto oride s three legs and try to hold your lunch down as your car spins, tilts and turns. 42 to ride with adult, 50 to ride alone.

    14. El Sombrero. This ride is a Six Flags classic, taking seated riders in circles as the over-sized Mexican hat tilts and twists. No minimum height with48 to ride alone.

    15. Speedy Gonzales Truckin Across America . The kids will love getting behind the wheel and riding with Speedy Gonzales on this basic convoy truminimum height with parent, 36 to ride alone.

    16. Mini Mine Train. If children are looking for something a little milder, the Mini Mine Train is perfect. Set out on an adventure as you load into this kid-coaster. 36 to ride with adult, 42 to ride alone.

    17. Daffy Duck s Capitol Tours. Get prepared for the trip of your life as you climb onto the Looney Tunes bus with Daffy Duck and soar into the air. Noheight with parent, 42 to ride alone.

    18. Silver Star Carousel. There s nothing like taking a spin around the old fashioned carousel. Grab the kids and gallop off into America s past time onrestored wooden horses. No minimum height with parent, 42 to ride alone.

    SHOWS, PHOTOS AND MORE

    19. Morning Show. Each day at 10:30 a.m. in front of the Silver Star Carousel, a few of your Looney Tune favorites like Sylvester and Bugs will team upworkers to put on a morning show for everyone in the park. You re encouraged to head up to the stage with them and dance to your heart s content.

    20. Oil Derrick. Six Flags signature 300-foot tower takes the title of the world s largest land-based oil derrick (although it doesn t operate as one). Ride televator to the top and marvel as you stare at out across the Dallas and Fort Worth skylines. No minimum height.

    21. Texas Justice. Get ready for a rip-roarin good show! Make your way to The Courthouse Stage to see Texas Justice, an old west-styled skit aboutwho steals the title of Texas Marshall and is forced to deal with the consequences.     22. Antique Photo Emporium. Dress up in old timey clothes and get your picture taken at this unique photo station, located right next to Runaway Mo

    23. Photo stations. There are a few photo stations around the park where you can take a picture with some of your favorite Six Flags and Looney Tunescharacters like Mr. Six, Bugs Bunny and Sylvester the Cat. So be sure to bring a camera, parents!

    24. Dick Clark s Face the Music. Sit down, cool off in the air conditioning and watch (or participate) in a game show for free. This Family Feud-style gafor six participants from the audience to answer questions about music old and modern. Check it out at the Lone Star Theater in Texas.     25. Six Flags Karaoke. Make your way to the Lone Star Gazebo, right beside Lone Star Theater, and test your singing skills at Six Flags Karaoke. Picmany modern songs, and try to maintain your composure as people stop to watch.

    26. Carica tures. If you ve never had a caricature of yourself drawn, here s your chance. Head over to Boomtown or Mexico and Spain and sit still as a talartist draws you to cartoony perfection.

    27. Penny Press. There s nothing more fun for the kids than having their penny stretched, warped and stamped with a design of their choice. You can finmachine in the Looney Tunes Mall, beside the M-Porium and other various locations throughout the park.

    28. My Six Flags Photos. There s no better way to remember your visit to Six Flags than through pictures. If you didn t pick up a picture from one of thephoto stations designated to each ride, it s not too late! Head over to the My Six Flags Photos window right beside the Looney Tunes Mall and order thosfor the scrap book.

    SHOPPING AND GAMING

    29. Studio 6F. Take a break from the heat of the day and head into Studio 6F, located in USA across from the All American Caf. Check out the latest ibrand clothing like DC and Quicksilver, grab a keychain or some sunglasses, take pictures in the photo booth or lounge back on the couch and play Wiifriends.

    30. Indian Village Trading Post. Located in Texas just a few steps from Newman s Corn Dog Caf, this western-style store has everything from stuffed

    and T-shirts to toy rifles and cowboy hats.

    31. Painted Shirts. Head over to the Tower section of the park to grab a hand-painted shirt for you and the kids. They ll do custom designs for guests, bdo cartoon characters, sport designs and names. Plan to pay anywhere between $18 and $40.

    32. Looney Tunes Mall. The largest store in Six Flags by far, this store holds every souvenir you can imagine T-shirt, plush dolls, super hero capes, cmugs, sunglasses, key chains and much more. If you want to buy the kids something to remember their day at Six Flags Over Texas, this s tore is the plit.

    33. El Mercado de la Plaza. This shop, located in Mexico and Spain, gives the open feeling of a Mexican-style market. Because of its location right bygate, it s the perfect place to grab that last-minute souvenir before you leave for the day.

    34. M-Porium. It may not be the biggest or most extensive store in Six Flags, but it s certainly the most unique. M-Porium is devoted entirely to the selliM&M-brand merchandise, including T-shirts, coffee mugs and plush toys. Check it out in the Old South section of the park, just a tumbleweed s roll awa

    35. Longhorn Game Hall. If you need a break from the heat, head into the Longhorn Game Hall, complete with an air hockey table, arm wrestling machclassic arcade shoot em ups and racing games. You ll need cash to purchase the tokens necessary to play any arcade games.

    WINNER EVERY TIME GAMES

    36. Roll-a-Ball. Head over to Boomtown to compete against friends or strangers for your choice of a Superman, Tweety Bird or Tazmanian Devil plush togame, which is like a miniaturized version of ski ball, allows you to progress your car on the track by rolling a ball faster and more accurately than your oWhen you sink the ball into the hole, your car moves forward.

    37. Basketbal l. Make a basket, get a prize. It s just that simple! You ll find this game and many others like it in the Boomtown area.

    38. 3-Point Challenge. Looking for something a litt le more difficult than a simple basketball mini-game? Try your skills at the 3-Point Challenge, locatedbeside Aquaman. Race against the clock and sink as many 3-pointers as you can!

    39. Ladder Climb. Visit Gotham City to t est your balancing skills. Race your way up a wobbly and unstable rope ladder for your chance at a prize. Maktop and claim your reward!

    FOOD, DESSERTS AND SNACKS

    40. Cold Stone Limited. There s nothing like ice cream to satisfy a growling stomach. Pick from flavors like Chocolate, Sweet Cream, Chocolate Devoti

    more at Cold Stone Limited, right next to the All American Cafe.

    41. All American Cafe. This restaurant, located beside Cold Stone Limited, serves all of your favorite American dishes. From charbroiled hamburgers astrips to bacon cheddar ranch fries and garden fresh salads, everyone is bound to find something they ll enjoy. Indoor and outdoor seating is available.

    42. Johnny Rockets. This classic hamburger and steak caf has two locations in the park one in Goodtimes Square and another in Mexico and SpainRockets serves some of the best milkshakes around, with flavors like Oreo, Strawberry-Banana and Mocha Fudge, as well as hamburgers, French fries,tuna melts and so much more. Its comprehensive and 1950s-styled menu options make Johnny Rockets an obvious choice for any worn out and hungryriders. Indoor and outdoor seating is available.

    43. Ben and Jerry s Ice Cream. This popular ice cream shop can be found in the Star Mall section (near the front gate) as well as in Old South and FraChocolate Chip Cookie Dough, Butter Pecan and Cherry Garcia are just a few of the flavors you can treat yourself to on a hot Six Flags day.
