AFTERLOVIn this quirky post-romantic comedy, a spurned lover is determined to find out why his ex-girlfriend doesn’t love him anymore.

AMERIKA SQUARE (PLATEIA AMERIKIS) In a troubled Athens neighborhood, the lives of a hipster bar owner, a Syrian refugee and a xenophobic nationalist intersect. Widely acknowledge as the best European film on the subject of immigration.

APOCALYPSE AGAIN: ACCEPTING INHERITANCE This documentary covers life on the island of Patmos, from the social scene at local haunts to the spirituality of the Monastery of St. John the Theologian and the Holy Cave. But it is the visit to the monastery’s library and museum that opens a revelation on the very foundation of the modern world and its cracks. (Free screening)

BORDER SOULS (PSYCHES TON SYNORON) This documentary examines the refugee situation in Greece and focuses on a monk who rallies the support of nuns and local townspeople to help him feed the needy.

On the same program:

DOGS OF DEMOCRACY A heartwarming documentary on the street dogs of Athens and the people who care for them. (English)

THE BOY ON THE BRIDGE (TO AGORI STI GEFYRA) In a seemingly idyllic Cypriot village, a young boy finds himself at the center of a murder investigation that will change his life forever.

BREAD AND OLIVES AND OTHER DELECTABLES A tasty selection of short and not so short films. (Free screening)

IN THE MOUNTAIN PASTURES (STA OREINA VOSKOTOPIA) Stunning cinematography captures the beauty of the pristine Greek mountains as nomadic shepherds talk about their lives and their herds.

ISTORIA A Greek expatriate suffering from Alzheimer’s returns to Greece in the company of his son and grandson to come to terms with his troubled past in the Greek Civil War and hopefully find closure. (Free screening)

THE OTHER ME (ETEROS EGO)The police ask a professor of criminology to help them identify a serial killer. The professor cracks the case in a most unusual way.

LIFE OF SIGNIFICANT SOIL Two young people struggling through their failing relationship suddenly realize that they are trapped. Reprised from last year’s festival due to popular demand and presented once again in memory of its star, Alexis Mouyiaris, who died as he was nearing completion of this film. (Free screening, English)

THE PATRIARCH’S ROOM This documentary revisits the case of the first Patriarch of Jerusalem to be relieved of his title in 2000 years of church history. The investigation involves not only the inner sanctum of the Church but also the Israeli secret service. (English)

PERFECT STRANGERS (TELEIOI XENOI)In this smart, ensemble comedy, seven friends who gather for dinner decide to place their cell phones on the table and share all incoming calls and messages. Chaos ensues.

PHAEDRA In this 1962 classic directed by Jules Dassin, an obsessed woman faces the consequences of a doomed love affair with her stepson. Melina Mercouri and Anthony Perkins star. Music by Mikis Theodorakis. (English)

ROZA OF SMYRNA (I ROZA TIS SMYRNIS) The discovery of a blood-stained wedding dress in an antique shop begins a quest into a painful past to uncover a story of forbidden love in the old city of Smyrna.

SON OF SOFIA (O GIOS TIS SOFIAS) A young boy comes to Greece from Russia to join his mother. Not the least of his challenges is accepting his mother’s marriage to an elderly Greek man. Winner: Best International Narrative Feature, Tribeca Film Festival 2017.(Russian and Greek)
