What is BIM?

BIM is a process that helps people make better decisions.

Why Use BIM?

Learned of need and possibilities in university.

Learned of tool that could deliver in 1988.

Start Virtual Design & Construction?

Built first model in 1991.

Fully implemented in firm by 1993.

New firm to fully embrace BIM in 1996.

Effective BIM Tools?

Onuma System, supplemented by ArchiCad and MANY other tools.

No desktop tool can effectively do BIG BIM.

Most effective approach is to embrace sharing, open standards and cloud

computing.

One Tool or Many?

The technology will continue to evolve...so, no tool is best.

Many tools, working at many levels of detail simultaneously are necessary.

 Training for BIM?

Time to competence in BIM can be very short...first must understand.

Software training is dependent on level of mashable software intelligence.

Onuma System requires as little as one hour.

ArchiCad requires from one to three days.

Revit requires from one to three weeks.Others vary from three days to six weeks.

BIM Leadership?

Chuck Eastman (Georgia Tech) and Jerry Laiserin

Kimon Onuma, Finith Jernigan, Diane Davis...SHiP Group

David Hammond (US Coast Guard)

Richard See (Microsoft), Eurostep (Finland & Sweden)

Founders of Graphisoft, Heikki Kulusjarvi (Solibri), Senat Properties (Finland)Founders of the International Alliance for Interoperability (now buildingSMART)

CIFE (Stanford), Lawrence Berkely National Lab, US Corps of Engineers

Where is BIM Now?

Much BIM Washing.

Concepts poorly understood.

Idea past tipping point.

Tools are available to do BIG BIM and BIG Data.

Much inertia to overcome from those that do not fully understand.

BIG BIM & little bim?

3 Categories...No. BIM is more holistic than that.

Highest level is generally considered to be Enterprise BIM.

Some refer to Lonely BIM (which is little bim).

Many think Integrated Project Delivery is end goal...not so.

BIG BIM is about whole world...built environment...not design and construction.

btw. Tekla is a company with software tools, not a bim category!9

 Are There Lifecycle Tools?

Onuma System is closest to goal of managing data for life.

Mainly due to systems model server capability and ability to interconnect.

Higher level model servers must become ubiquitous to fully achieve.

BIM for Existing?

YES...YES...YES...YES...YES...YES...YES...YES...YES...YES...YES...YES...YES

Most building stock across entire planet is, and will be existing

95% of my work is for existing buildings.

Have built millions of SM of existing condition models

Cost is similar to as-exists survey in traditional projects...not an extra

btw. anyone who says otherwise should be evaluated carefully! See BIM Washing.11

Have Relationships Changed?

Cooperation vs Collaboration.

 Architects learning to become conductors.

Working together, sharing and networks critical.

Silos and holding information close is formula for disaster.

What Started BIM?

Early adopters used ArchiCad without clients’ knowledge...schools,

government, housing.

Groups such as SHiP and IAI members convinced government agencies of

need and opportunity...Senate Properties, US Coast Guard, GSA, Smithsonian,

US Corps of Engineers.Large owners demanded change...Construction Users Roundtable

BIM & IPD?

BIM is a process enabled by software tools and the internet.

Integrated Project Delivery is a method for delivery for a small subset of

BIM...similar to Design/Build, Construction Management, et.al.

btw. IPD relates mainly to design and construction and can enable BIG BIM. It is not BIG BIM itself!14

BIM from the Beginning?

BIM can be used at any phase of anything in the build environment.

BIM can be as simple as a spreadsheet or as complex as a virtual model of the

world.

Parametric design tools can be little bim. So is Revit, ArchiCad, Tekla, et.al.

Use of BIM should start at the absolute beginning and continue cradle-to-cradle.

Is BIM Risky?

Used with understanding, BIM reduces risk for all.

Used in isolation without sharing, BIM can increase the risk of those that

withhold information.

BIM saves time, money and reduces conflict.
