Liturgy, Music, & Prayer

Most of us come to the same Mass each weekend. With good reason, we have a sense that it is “our” Mass and we are invested in how the prayer, the songs, the preaching and the sense of hospitality reflect who we are as well.

When your family invites you for Thanksgiving, Christmas or another holiday dinner, the first thing you usually ask is: Can I bring something or help? It is natural to want to contribute to the work required to prepare a meal and get-together.

In a similar way, for “our” Mass – every regular parishioner should ask how he or she could contribute to the various liturgical ministries. Can I help in any way? Of course, there are good reasons why some cannot serve due to age, young children, infirmity, or current circumstance. But truthfully, if more individuals were involved, the responsibility would be more equally shared. How can you help?

Ushers. We have the greatest need for ushers especially at the evening Masses and at 1130 AM on Sundays. This is a great opportunity for families — parents and children — to serve together. They are not complicated tasks but can bring a sense of purpose about “why we go to church!” Consider the summer as a good occasion to begin. And we need current ushers to consider the role of Head Usher at these Masses!

Eucharistic Ministers of Holy Communion. Many people consider themselves “unworthy” to serve in this special ministry. But remember Jesus’ response to Peter when he refused to let him wash his feet. We are all unworthy except for our salvation in Christ. You will never have a greater appreciation for the Holy Eucharist than in service to others.

Altar Servers. Busy schedules for sports and activities make it especially difficult for us to maintain a regular schedule of altar servers. We need more youth from our parish and school to be trained as altar servers. Summer is a great time to start.

Scheduling and Training. Our online Ministry Scheduler makes it very convenient to accept an assignment or ask for a substitute if your schedule changes. It can also set up particular service times for certain Masses. We will be offering training sessions for ALL ministries in June. Please consider helping at “your” Mass!

To Get Started: contact Agnes at the church office by email ([email protected]) or phone (503-636-7687) to begin the process of training!

OLL School: Third Graders Tour Portland Bridges!Third graders from Our Lady of the Lake School got the chance to tour the bridges of downtown Portland. After studying about local communities and the types of bridges, it was the perfect way to better understand the subject matter.

We started out by crossing the Steel Bridge, a truss, double vertical-lift bridge. We learned how it is the only remaining one of its kind. After following the Eastbank Esplanade, we crossed back over the Morrison Bridge. The Morrison Bridge is a fixed trunnion bascule mov-

able bridge. While on the Morrison, we had the amazing opportunity to tour the bridge tower and see all of the working parts. While there, near the counterweight, we got to see what happens when the bridge mechanic opened the bridge. This was extremely exciting, and many students said that was their favorite part of the tour.

After eating lunch in Pioneer Courthouse Square, we took a streetcar and walked across the Tilikum Crossing Bridge. This bridge is a cable-stayed bridge. It was still very shiny and new feeling, being our newest “Bridge of the Future” in Portland. It was a beautiful eight-mile walk of adventure and learning.

“Assisted suicide laws typically appear to limit eli-gibility to terminally ill patients who are expected to die within six months but don’t distinguish between persons who will die within six months with treatment and those who will die within six months without treatment. This means that patients with treatable diseases (like diabetes or chronic respiratory or cardiac disease) and patients with disabilities requiring ventilator support are all eligible for lethal drugs because they would die within six months without the treatment they would normally receive.” Secretary of Pro-life Activities, USCCB.org
