How was it started?

Peyton Boswell, Jr. (Art Digest)says 'oPerhaps the most successfulartist in residence appointment wasthat of Lamar Dodd to the Univer-sity of Georgia. Dodd remained tobecorne head of one of our mostprogressive and active art depart.ments and his labors met and en-couraged a love of art in Alfred H.Holbrook retired lawyer.Alfred H. Holbrook had practicedlaw in New York City since 1898and he and Mrs. Holbrook hadbegun their collection before herdeath in 1940. Shortly afterwards hedecided to retire, determined to ex-pand their art collection as a memo-rial to their mutual interest. As theeollection grew, and space for itsdisplay became essential, he beganlooking for an art school where hiscollection might be properly housedand give value to future art lovers.In 1945 he enrolled as an art studentof Lamar Dodd. The gift of the Col.lection to Georgia and in effect, tothe entire South followed."

Ol what does the Museum consisr?

The original gift qf .100 paintingshas been doubled and with giftsfrom others now amounts ro 225pictures-a typical original paintingby each prominent American artistduring 100 years. It i" housed in theground floor of the University Lib-rary building where it has two gal-leries. The North one is called "TheEva Underhill Holbrook MemorialGallery" and the South one ooThe

Lamar Dodd Gallery". A new li-brary building is now under con-struction and upon completion theMuseum will occupy the whole ofthe present Library building withhalf a dozen or more galleries andother facilities.

How useful is the Museum,?

It has been visited try thousands.The art students have frequentlyused it in studying outstandingworks of Art in the Memorial Gal-lery which displays paintings fromits collection and in the Lamar DoddGallery which houses loan exhibits.Each year pu-blic School teacherswith four to five thousand schoolchildren visit the Museum to studyspecial exhihits for young people.The exhibits are changed eachmonth and the Museum is openeYery day in the week from 9:00to 5:30, Saturdays 9:00 to 12:00 andon Sundays from 2:30 to 5:30.Frequent meetings are held in theMuseum by the Extension Depart-

ment for its conferences, by theCollege of Journalism'for its con-ventions of Editors, by the AthensArt Association for

meetings, and others. Special ex.hibits are given in support of theseveral objects of these conventionsand rneetings.

Wha does the Museum need,?

It should gradually acquire paiut-ings by foreign artists, sculptures,prints and other objects of art todevelop a eompletb museum equip-ment.In order to solve these needs, abeneficial corporation has beenformed and chartered by the Stateentitled "Georgia Museurn PorronsInc." This wili enable members ofthe corporation to join in a support-ing organization.

The becoming a useful part ofa growing constructive enter.prise promoting culture and artspirit in Georgia,Invitations to all previews, re.ceptions and lectures.
