THE ADVENT WREATH is a Christian tradition that symbolises the passage of the four weeks of the season of Advent. It is a wreath usually made from evergreens, with four violet coloured candles. Beginning with the First Sunday of Advent, the lighting of a candle can be accompanied by a Bible reading, devotional time and prayers. An additional candle is lit during each subsequent week. Each candle represents an aspect of the spiritual preparation for the coming of Jesus Christ. By the last Sunday before Christmas, all four candles are lit. Many Advent wreaths include a fifth, Christ candle which is lit on Christmas Day. The custom is observed both in family settings and at public church services. There is no set meaning for each candle. For some congregations the candles represent the virtues of the Christian faith – Hope, Love, Joy and Peace. For others the candles represent the Prophecy Candle, Bethlehem Candle, Shepherds’ Candle, and Angels’ Candle. At St Andrew’s this year the candles will represent for us the Waiting Candle; the Prophecy Candle; the John the Baptist Candle; the Mary Candle.

Prayer for our new Parish Priest of St Andrew’s Bountiful God, we thank you for giving to this parish a new priest. May the Rev’d Sam Goodes be a faithful pastor who will faithfully speak your word and minister your sacraments; an encourager who will equip your people for ministry and enable us to fulfil our calling. Bless Sam, Kate, Maddy, Emily, Hannah and Joshua as they prepare to come and live among us and minister to us, through Jesus Christ our Lord. Amen.

LIGHTING THE FIRST ADVENT CANDLE Advent candles tell their story as we watch and pray; longing for the Day of Glory, ‘Come, Lord, soon,’ we say. Pain and sorrow, tears and sadness changed for gladness on that Day. A&M 26, verse 1. Mark Earey (born 1965)

The first candle on the Advent Wreath this year is the “Waiting Candle.” In Micah chapter 7 and verse 7 we read, “As for me, I will look to the Lord, I will wait for the God of my salvation; my God will hear me.” Gracious God, we wait for your coming in great power and majesty. We wait in hope; we wait in patience; we wait in expectation. May this candle remind us of the light that came into the world with Jesus, and of the light that will come when our waiting is fulfilled in the glory of your kingdom. (The candle is now lit) Thanks be to God.

‘Heaven and earth will pass away,’ says the Lord, ‘but my words will not pass away.’ Mark 13.31

Prayer of the Day:

Eternal God, through long generations you prepared a way for the coming of your Son, and by your Spirit you still bring light to illumine our paths: renew us in faith and hope that we may welcome Christ to rule our thoughts and claim our love; to whom be glory for ever. Amen.

Readings:

Advent is the season of joyful waiting for the coming of Christ. It begins the liturgical year where we start with the story of Christ from its beginning, the time of expectation that a Messiah would come. As we prepare for the Christmas festival, the celebration of Christ’s birth, we also think about his promise to ‘come again’ and what that might mean. The readings from the Bible that follow, highlight this theme of ‘waiting on God.’

1st Reading: Isaiah 64.1-9 OT p. 631 The book of Isaiah appears to be made up of three parts. The third part (Chapters 55-66) was, probably, written around 400 BCE and was addressed to the people of Israel after they had returned from exile in Babylon. Today’s passage poetically laments that the people have not loved God as they were called to do, but acknowledges that, like a potter moulds clay, so God will continue to mould them and never abandon them.

Psalm: Ps 80.1-7; 17-19 (said) APBA p. 307 The need for restoration, we heard in the first reading, is expressed here, in the repetition of the prayer for God to restore the nation. This psalm laments over what has gone wrong and calls God to send a ‘son of man’ (i.e. a Messiah) to help.

2nd Reading: 1 Corinthians 1: 1-9 NT p. 153 St Paul writes to the Christians in Corinth using the highly stylised forms of speech of his day. In this opening part of his letter, he hints at the need to wait for the coming of the Lord, implying the Corinthian Christians have not yet arrived. While they ‘lack nothing’ in terms of spiritual gifts, they are still on the journey and have more growing and learning to do.

Gospel Reading: Mark 13.24-37 NT. p. 47 Written down at a time of suffering and persecution, these words of Jesus were words of hope that the suffering of the world would end, in the coming of the ‘Son of man’ (i.e. Messiah). Using colourful, apocalyptic language, this passage affirms that the power of Jesus will outlast and overcome the powers that destroy and oppress people. Two thousand years later, we are invited to share the hope, and to share the yearning.

THANKS FOR ST ANDREW’S DAY. Many thanks to so many people who prepared and worked to make St Andrew’s Day last Sunday such a success. For all the people involved in the worship - choir, readers, intercessors, assistants, those who presented Melodie for Confirmation and David for Reception - for all the people involved in the fellowship lunch - kitchen volunteers, Parish Centre preparers, food orderers, salad and food contributors, those who tidied away and cleaned afterwards. It was a wonderful day of celebration and fellowship. Thank you to everyone.

NEWTON COLLEGE, PNG. Thank you to the parishioners who have made kind donations for our brief appeal for funds for Newton College in PNG. Those donations will now be sent off to Church Office to be joined with other donations from around the Diocese so that building materials and books can be sent to the College.

THANK YOU FROM THE LANGSHAWS. We are very grateful for the special … and unique … way in which the parish celebrated with us for our Golden Wedding Anniversary. We knew something was afoot when The Hon. Prof. Lord Gilmour of Gilberton arrived in his robes of office. We were surprised and delighted to hear his mellifluous speech and to receive the gifts of our chains of golden medallions, the “mace” and the special certificate.
