Fisher College: A Life-Changing Experience

Fisher believes that college is more than just an academic education—it’s a life-changing experience. College molds your perspective of the world, it provides new opportunities, and it exposes you to new ideas about life. Since 1903, Fisher has been providing life-changing experiences to students by focusing on the three most important aspects of a college experience: education, dedication, and life.

We provide an education that is relevant in today’s economy and lets you focus on achieving your career goals as soon as you graduate. Classes are small, focused, and provide an intimate experience so you get the most out of them. Our dedicated staff includes full-time faculty advisors and our classes are taught by professors, not teaching assistants, so you are surrounded by opportunities to learn and delve deeper into your subjects. At Fisher, we know that your life outside the classroom is an equally important part of your college experience. The Fisher community gives you many opportunities to get involved and find what’s important to you outside of academics, helping you grow as an individual.

Features of Fisher College include:

Generous Need-Based Financial Assistance and Academic Scholarships

As an accredited, non-profit institution, Fisher College participates in a full range of federal and state financial aid programs. In addition, Fisher offers its students generous institutional scholarships based upon financial need, academic merit, and residential status. Students with grade point averages above a 3.0 or who are members of the National Honors Society, TECH PREP, or DECA may qualify for additional academic scholarships.

A student shares her Fisher experiences

I chose to attend Fisher College primarily because of the location. Being from Schenectady, New York, going to school in the city of Boston sounded very attractive. When I first visited Fisher for a tour, I was amazed at the beautiful brownstones and impressive architecture of the campus.

As a student, I learned that the faculty and staff at Fisher were truly generous and helpful individuals. I could name a few that have made impressions over the years, but one person that particularly stands out is Dr. Danielle Herget, Associate Professor, Humanities and Theatre. I have taken three of her classes and have had the pleasure of working with her on several drama club performances. She is insightful, intelligent, and always willing to lend a hand.

My advice to future students would be to GET INVOLVED. This is the place where you will create unforgettable memories and start different adventures with new friends. I joined the drama club my freshman year and will serve as club president this year. Planning and performing in shows is one

of the most gratifying and fun things I have ever done. I have also been involved in the Student Government Association for the last three years, attended Habitat for Humanity with a group of other Fisher students in Macon, GA, and studied abroad in Australia for a semester.

Each year as a Fisher student has been vastly different but just as memorable as the prior year. There is no doubt I would have never studied abroad or done Habitat for Humanity if I had not chosen Fisher for my education.

Small Class Sizes Mean Individualized Attention

Fisher students enjoy the comforts of small class sizes, making sure you will feel like an individual, never a number. All classes at Fisher are taught by professors — not teaching assistants. Since the average class size is only 20 students, you’ll get to know your professors and your fellow students well. You won’t be too intimidated to ask questions, and you’ll feel like you belong to an extended family — one that is here to help you reach your academic and career goals.

A graduate shares his Fisher experiences Studying at Fisher College was definitely a great learning experience for me. As a freshman, I was a bit timid and kept to myself, but as I started to really get to know more about the Fisher College community, things changed. I began growing as a student, an athlete, and as a man. I started to get more involved with people I met through basketball, work study, and as a member of the Common Good club. I joined the Army ROTC in order to gain solid leadership experience and serve my country. I needed to invest in something that was going to prepare me to excel physically and mentally in the real world. I graduated with a Bachelor of Science Degree in Management with a concentration in Computer Information Systems in May 2011 and as a commissioned 2nd Lieutenant in the Army — due to a lot of hard work and the mentoring I received from the faculty and staff at Fisher College.

There are many faculty and staff members that made a great impact on me, but Professor Donna Brady and my basketball coach David Lindberg are two that really stand out. Professor Brady is a dedicated and passionate professor whom I really admire. From the first day I had Managerial Accounting class with her, I knew she was a great professor. I remember many long nights that she would spend assisting me with coursework, even during semesters I was not enrolled in her classes. My basketball coach, David Lindberg, has been a great mentor and has given me great advice over the past four years. Whether it was to help improve my basketball skills or improve my academic status, Coach Lindberg always offered guidance and support.

My goal is to keep enhancing my leadership attributes as an Armor Officer and build my credentials in order to acquire a suitable job in the civilian world. After my first three years of service, I plan to transfer to the Signal Corp Branch to gain more experience in the field of Information Systems. Within eight to ten years I

FisherOur faculty work tirelessly to help students become independent learners, critical thinkers, and successful students. In fact, our alumni often cite our faculty as the reason for their success. Fisher College has one of the highest graduation rates among associate degree granting institutions in New England because students feel comfortable seeking the assistance they need to adjust to college. Critical to this sense of belonging are the College’s faculty advisors. Advisors are experienced members of the full-time faculty and are trained to assist in a student’s transition from high school to college.

Fisher is mindful of the fact that the first year of college is full of new changes and experiences. The Common Experience is a required 3-credit course designed to help first year students in their transition to the Fisher College community. Through academic and social activities, interactions with Common Experience instructors, and support from peers, students are equipped with the skills needed to achieve success. Students are allowed to select a Common Experience section based on their

academic pursuits, career goals, or personal interests. Past sections have included themes such as:

§ Love that Dirty Water: What it Means to be a Bostonian

§ Facebook Me, Text Me, Talk to Me § Reality TV: Leadership and Ethics § Old Stones to Smart Phones: Objects as

History, Culture, and Commodity § Icons of Fashion

Fisher also provides students with support through our Academic Center for Enrichment (ACE). The Center is staffed with 15-20 professional tutors who have earned their Master’s degrees or have professional experience in the areas they tutor. They help students with all aspects of the learning process, including organizational and study skills. All services provided by ACE are free to Fisher students. We also employ a Director of Student Accessibility Services for students who want additional support.

Fisher students leave as very different individuals than when they arrive. Your experiences outside the classroom broaden your horizons, expose you to new ideas, and allow you to grow into thoughtful adults who are ready to go out and succeed in the world.

At Fisher, we consider Student Life to be a combination of academic and social experiences that aid in a student’s development. Student Life can include an immersion in the arts, participation in community service projects, attendance at lectures and cultural events, and an appreciation of the diverse cultures of our students. Whether you choose to live on campus or commute, our Student Life opportunities enhance your sense of belonging.

While these activities vary each semester depending on student interest, some of the clubs and organizations that have been active recently at the College include:

If you are looking for entertainment beyond on-campus events and activities, the City of Boston is alive with cultural, educational, and recreational activities. Varsity Sports

We believe that athletics can help students develop and strengthen the qualities needed to succeed in life. We take pride in the successes of our student athletes — both in the sport and in the classroom. The Department of Athletics offers six varsity sports for intercollegiate competition. Our Men’s and Women’s Soccer, Men’s and Women’s Basketball, Softball, and Baseball teams are affiliated with the National Association of Intercollegiate Athletics (NAIA) as part of the American Mideast Conference. The College also offers competitive cheerleading at the club level.

Our student athletes have been recognized throughout past seasons as All-Conference players, Rookies of the Year, Players of the Week, and Players of the Year. Our teams have won Conference Championships and participated in National Tournaments under the guidance of dedicated, experienced coaches, many of whom have been named Conference Coaches of the Year. Most importantly, everyone involved with Fisher College Athletics commits to the NAIA Champions of Character’s core values of Respect, Responsibility, Integrity, Servant Leadership, and Sportsmanship.

For students who may not be interested in competing on a varsity level, Fisher offers a variety of intramural opportunities and a reduced-fee membership at a local fitness club.
