Flipping the Classroom- Designing blended learning spaces Fiona McCloy Office for Digital Learning April 2015
Aim & Outline
Session Aim Educational benefit of flipping the classroom and how to achieve this at Ulster. Session Outline What is it, learning benefits, how to achieve this and technologies that are available to support this at Ulster.
Flipping the Classroom…? Flip what happens inside and outside the classroom. Students engage with content online before class and use class time to actively engage with the content, in a deeper, collaborative and more cognitively challenging way.

Educational Benefit
• Improves student achievement. • Students can engage with content
at their own pace. • Instructor can focus their attention
on the students that most need it. • Makes more effective use of
valuable face to face time. • Promotes independent and self-
regulated learners, better prepared for the workplace.
Why now?
In 2007, Bergman & Sams gave their students online access to recorded lectures and shared their experiences. Current drivers • Pressures on higher education -
do more with less • Technology available to enable it • Student expectations
Ulster Perspective
• Greater Belfast Development. Innovative and transformative HE environment with student-centred spaces. 15,000 students in 2008.
• Ulster Learning Spaces Project 14/15 – best practice and student voice.
• CHERP Conference 2015 ‘Space Meets Pedagogy: Shaping Active and Collaborative Learning Environments at Ulster’. Keynote: Shirley Dugdale
• Digital Learning Strategy, end 14/15. Blended is the norm, with open education strand.

• Upload video content using ShareStream Pick-n-Play • Publish video content using ShareStream Mashup • Scaffold additional information and tasks alongside video
content to inform class time activities (a wide variety of information, communication, collaboration, assessment and feedback tools are available)
• TechSmith Relay available to create screencast videos • Synchronous teaching tool e.g. Blackboard Collaborative
should be available S1 15/16.

Active learning
‘The consistent message from multiple studies is that active learning – the engaging spaces and the pedagogical methods – provide a much more enjoyable and challenging learning experience for students’ (Peberdy 2013)
In Class
• Instructors find this the most challenging – how to make best use of class time
• Consider physical space – attempt to make it flexible and dynamic
• Can be informed by pre-class online activities, e.g. quiz, discussion, etc.
Learning Design
Careful consideration of the overall learning design and how the out of class and in class activities link together. One size does not fit all – depends on discipline, topic, cohort, class size, learning outcomes, experience, etc.
Flipping the Classroom Things to consider…
• Start small, with an relatively easy to grasp topic • Should work with all levels – ideally start in first year • Allow time for preparing in class and outside class activities • Expect some student resistance, passive lectures are easier! • Stay committed to flipping – easy to revert back • Plan how to manage students that don’t engage with outside
class activities – expect this to happen • Evaluate the effectiveness
Pre-Class Activities
Complete the Flipping the Classroom Bb Test. Post to the Bb Discussion threads – • Have could you flip your classroom? • Any questions you have.
