ORA
NGE COUNTY, FLORIDA
Greetings,
Welcome to the first Florida Simulation Summit. On behalf of Orange County and the National Center for Simulation, we are so glad you could join us today!
Central Florida is known for our world-famous theme parks and venues, gaming and entertainment industries, advancements in healthcare and medicine, extraordinary life science research institutions, highly ranked universities, our modeling, simulation, training and defense industries, and our emerging cyber, energy, transportation and manufacturing technologies.
When it comes to Florida’s use of commercial simulation, some truly don’t know the half of it. Today, we will highlight the state’s multi-billion dollar simulation industry and help identify opportunities for businesses to commercialize simulation.
We have showcased our use of simulation in defense for decades, but many outside our region do not fully understand how commercial simulation helps bring Central Florida’s internationally celebrated family entertainment experiences to life. Very similar simulation technology is also used to train medical teams and parents at our state-of-the art hospitals for local children who need special care. Commercial simulation is also being used in our classrooms to help our teachers with their lessons and help prepare our students for highly technical careers in digital media.
Our impressive brain trust of Florida Simulation Summit speakers include experts from the Walt Disney World Resort, Universal Orlando, the University of Central Florida, EA Sports, Space Florida and Limbitless Solutions—just to name a few.
The use of simulation in defense and aerospace has developed an impressive economic engine in Central Florida. Our robust modeling, simulation and technology (MS&T) sector employs more than 27,000 Floridians with an average salary of more than $70,000 in a $5 billion industry in Central Florida alone. This behemoth industry is responsible for an overall $8 billion economic impact in the State of Florida.
The Central Florida Research Park, located next to the University of Central Florida, is the epicenter of the MS&T industry and fosters collaboration, cooperation and partnership between academia, industry and government.
To protect this valued economic cluster, Orange County responded to looming threats posed by potential defense spending cuts and base closures by forming the MS&T Blue Ribbon Commission in 2013. The Commission is a coalition of community leaders and industry stakeholders that advocates for this high-value and high-wage economic sector in Florida. The Commission continues to educate key audiences regarding the high level of synergy between MS&T and other key sectors of our economy, including medical, gaming, education, aviation, aerospace, animation, theme park, emergency management and public safety.
We extend a very special thanks to Gov. Rick Scott, the Florida Legislature and all of our community champions who worked to secure the $20 million appropriation from the state.
We are ready to expand upon the region’s branding campaign, “Orlando. You don’t know the half of it.” and showcase the other half of the region’s commercial simulation sector —the possibilities are endless.
Thank you for joining us at the Florida Simulation Summit and for making Orange County the best place to live, work and raise a family.
