Florida Voices for Animals Have-a-Heart Fundraising Dinner & Silent Auction Always a Great Event!

This year marks the 25th Anniversary of FVA since its inception so the Have-A-Heart (HAH) Annual Fundraising Dinner and Silent Auction was extra special. Attendees were very busy bidding on lots of items at FVA’s Silent Auction at Trang Viet Cuisine. A few people were extremely competitive in their bids because the items were ‘in their sights.’ A wonderful, tasty, vegan dinner accompanied pleasant conversations. George Eisman, Registered Dietitian (RD), gave a very informative talk about the hazards of animal products to our health. Also in attendance was animal advocate and local celebrity, Cathy Unruh, an Emmy-winning television journalist and author of the new book, “Taming Me: Memoirs of a Clever Island Cat.”

Brenda Csik, Ted Andresen and wife, Chris Cargo, were recognized as having attended EVERY HAH since it began. Pamela Perry (Investigation Manager, Hillsborough County Animal Services) was recognized for saving Phoebe, a female pit bull who was buried up to her neck and shot at close range. Mike DeWitt adopted Phoebe. Both Pamela & Mike got the "FVA Animal Hero Award," Colleen Mulcahey won “FVA Activist of the year” Cody Allen won “Student activist of the year” Marie Galbraith won “FVA Board Member of the year.” More info about the Animal Hero Award will be in the next newsletter. Become a Tampa Bay Vegfest 2014 Sponsor or

Volunteer This year, the 5th Annual Tampa Bay Veg Fest (TBVF) is scheduled for November 8th. By becoming an individual sponsor, you can help us underwrite part of the cost of this event. So far, each year, FVA has spent more money than what we have made. Our goal this year is to at least break even. To continue doing this for many more years, we will have to be able to cover the costs associated with putting on an event of this size (over 4000 people attended). Thanks to our individual sponsors last year (Catherine Heim, Jag Mehda, Bill & Myriam

Parham and Cathy Unruh), we were able to raise an additional $2,000 toward our 2013 expenses. Won’t you consider becoming one of our individual sponsors this year? To become an individual sponsor, please send a check for $500, or greater, to FVA and put TBVF Sponsor in the memo. Your financial support will help us greatly in making this another successful event. There are many other ways to volunteer for Veg Fest. We need lots of help planning and organizing! If you would like to be involved in some of the behind-the-scenes tasks, we ask that you contact one of our two coordinators to offer your assistance. Diane Koon ([email protected]) and Marie

Galbraith ([email protected]) can tell you where we could use your help at TBVF. Suzanne House

([email protected]) can sign you up to volunteer for the day of the event. You can also call our FVA number 727-656-8368 or send a message to [email protected]

FVA Newsletter Publisher Help FVA needs help in publishing its quarterly newsletter. Anyone who would like to learn a new skill or currently has the knowledge in publishing, please contact FVA at [email protected] Unlike the Marines, FVA is looking for MANY good activists!

“These beautiful creatures are much too large

and intelligent to be confined in small, concrete pens for their entire lives.” California state Assemblyman Richard Bloom, introducing a bill that would ban orca shows at SeaWorld in San Diego. The bill would also prohibit captive breeding of orcas. It was immediately apparent that the bill faces a fight. The San Diego Union-Tribune called the bill “ridiculous” and “almost beyond belief.” ☺ “Bethany's Story” wins Best of Raw Awards for

Favorite Film! “Bethany’s Story” was produced by Janet

McKee and documents a teenager’s crippling reaction to an inoculation confining her to a wheelchair for two years with no hope. She took matter into her own hands, did some research and went on a completely raw food diet which healed her body quite dramatically and quickly. ☺ Grey2K announced that the state of Colorado

banned dog racing! On Monday Mar 10, 2014, Governor John Hickenlooper signed a bill to prohibit greyhound racing in the Centennial State. Colorado has become the thirty-ninth state in which the cruelty of dog racing is illegal. The chief bill sponsor was Representative KC Becker of Boulder. ☺ George Zuraski designed a fantastic FVA Ad for Creative Loafing. This was developed by the FVA board members and designed by George. Pics of Giraffe, Orca, Greyhounds & Elephant. Headline: “Should Their Captivity Be Our Entertainment?” Look for it in Creative Loafing!

Love This by

Gretchen Primack If you permit this evil, what is the good

of the good of your life?

--Stanley Kunitz The body floods with chemicals saying, Love this, and she does, and births it; it is a boy she begins to clean and nose, but he is dragged away by his back feet. She will never touch him again, though she hears him howl and calls back for days. Her breast milk is banked for others. Her son is pulled away to lie in his box. He will be packed for slaughter. How ingenious we are! To make product from byproduct: make use of the child, kill and pack and truck him to plates. And when the gallons slow, we start over, and her body says, Love this! And she does, though in a moment she will never touch him again. His milk is not for him. And when the milk slows too slow, she will join him on the line, pounds of ground. How we will dine! And talk of our glossy dogs! Her body will break up on our forks, as mothers beg us for the grain we stuffed her with, and children beg us for the water scouring her blood from the factory walls. And when her wastes and gases and panic heat our air so hot our world stops breathing—then will we stop? Then will we grow kind, let the air cool and mothers breathe?
