This project is about transforming our ideas literally from within the head to its exterior - to build a self-wearable paper headpiece over a period of three months. it is micro-scale architecture for the head, as we were encouraged to explore our personal space and materialize our ideas through stages of planning, designing and construction. Throughout the process a range of representational methods were employed such as sketching, comparative diagraming, m ode l l ing a nd c om put e r i za t ion , during which we gradually learned to communicate abstract concepts.

1. finalized plasticine prototype; 2. draw ‘contour’lines at 1cm interval along the exterior of plasticine model; 3. dissect the model following the contours; 4. trace outline of the slices; 5. scan outlines into Google Sketchup forming a 3D framework; 6. envelope the frame with triangulated surfaces; 7-9. projection photos of my head was used to generate a 3D skull model; 10-11. intersect the skull model with the headwear to tailor it for my head

12. unfold the model into rows of continuous strips;13. print out the strips on an A1 paper;14-15. cut the strips off the paper with tabs attached for assembling;16-18. divide the model into 7 parts and assemble them first, then pull all the parts together

At the end of semester all students's works were exhibited in a fashion parade where they were judged by not only peers but also guest critics. My headware was awarded one of the best designs of this subject.

Video of the exhibition can be viewed at http://vimeo.com/13719923[my headware shows up at 08:25 and 9:00]

Brief: a t a round 36 months o f age , c h i l d r e n d e m o n s t r a t e a n understanding of cause and effect by making predictions about what could happen and reflect upon what caused something to happen. design a constrution in the carlton Garden playground which could accoustically inspire 3 year old children.

inspired by the domino effect, i came up with a resolution that could meet as much requirements as possible - a circle of hollow tubed frames with self-attached pads. due to the varioius sizes of frames i.e. different volume of air contained, when a 3 year old runs his/her hand through the pads each one will tap upon the next frame emitting a range of sounds.

Hence the structure literally provides children with a ‘keyboard’ to play with, meanwhile hinting at the logic between ‘keys’ and notes.

an alternative to diverse frame sizes is to allow rainwater to fill the hollow tubes. By controlling sizes of the frames and location/size of the opennings, a series of pitches can be produced according to the water-air ratio within the tubes.

aboriginal instruments such as didgeridoo or clapping sticks are placed in the center for exploraton.

DeSiGn Brief

Located at the lower reach of Yarra river, Herring island is of little known to the people in Melbourne despite its proximity to the CBD. it is home to a rich range of indeginous vegetation and fauna, but over the years it has been used as a depository for silt dredged from the river and has experienced periods of neglect. The aim of this project is to build a semi-underground complex that uncovers the past and present of Herring island, meanwhile responding to the environmental sculpture park on site.
