  • MESSAGE FROM THE PRINCIPAL

Farewell It is with sadness that I inform you that Mrs Annita Frazis and Mrs Irene Sklavos will be finishing their tenure as our Canteen operators at the end of Term 2. Mrs Frazis and Mrs Sklavos have given 11 and 2 years respectively of marvellous service to the College in this capacity. Their professionalism, kindness and generosity will be dearly missed by our students and staff. We sincerely thank these dedicated College community members for providing nutritious and nourishing food to our children. “Rory’s School Lunches” will be taking over the operation of the Canteen at St George College from the start of Term 3; Tuesday, 26 July 2016. Rory’s brings economies of scale to our boutique College Canteen and allows parents, students and staff to order both online and using the current before school ‘in person’ ordering procedure on the Senior Campus, and class tub orders on the Junior Campus. Rory’s offers a brilliant service with affordable food. Many independent Schools in Adelaide have engaged this South Australian, family run company. Do have a look at sample menus at www.rorys.com.au. Further communication about the online ordering procedure and menu information will be forwarded before the end of the term. A Farewell Assembly has been organised for Annita and Irene, on Friday, 17 June at 12.30pm in the Performing Arts Centre, by our dedicated Year 9 students. Families are welcome to attend or if not possible, do make the time to thank Annita and Irene at a time convenient to you.

  • MESSAGE FROM THE DEPUTY PRINCIPAL

    Mr Peter Karamoshos

Food for Thought At St George College, our aim is to always inspire and challenge our students. To further stimulate student engagement, we will be introducing a new extra-curricular program for Year 8 students during Week 9 of Term 2 – “Food for Thought”. This new program will enhance the learning experience for Year 8 students and complement what happens in the classroom. All Year 8 students will participate in the “Food for Thought” program for 4 days from Monday, 27 June to Thursday, 30 June. This four day experiential and interactive learning experience is set in a cooking context. Students will work in small groups to plan and create fresh and tasty meals, from the simple to the complex. Through this program, students will also develop life-long skills in terms of working effectively as a member of a team, taking calculated risks, learning from mistakes and problem solving. Cooking skills, the correct use of kitchen utensils, budgeting, food handling, healthy eating and the identification and purchase of fresh produce are other important and life-long skills the program aims to develop. “Food for Thought” has been developed in collaboration with the team from Sprout, Themis Chryssidis (an accredited practicing dietician) and Callum Hann (celebrity chef and Masterchef contestant). Themis and Callum will work closely with our students and staff in providing guidance and expertise.

Faith, Family, Forever Excelling One of the real strengths of our College is our faith. Our students and families value the important opportunity for personal and spiritual growth. We are blessed to have such a strong connection with the St George Greek Orthodox Church who support us both at school and at church. Father Kon Skoumbourdis led the students from the Senior Campus through the Liturgy Service which celebrates 40 days since the resurrection. The respect and deference shown by our students was obvious during the service and was a positive reflection on their families and on the College. We look forward to a similar church service next Friday for the students from the Junior Campus. Australia’s Biggest Morning Tea Our College has once again decided to help fight cancer by participating in Australia’s biggest Morning Tea. We are holding a fundraiser selling well known Greek desserts and savoury snacks as well as Traditional Morning Tea Treats. All proceeds go to the Cancer Council to help continue its vital work in cancer research, prevention, and support services. The Cancer Council is the largest independent funder of cancer research in Australia. The charity devotes themselves in providing the best treatment, supportive care and information to support anyone affected by cancer. Please see the flyer on the back page of our newsletter for details.

Year 5/6 Camp to El Shaddai On Wednesday, 18 May 2016, Year 5 and 6 students were seen boarding a bus which was traveling to EL Shaddai, Wellington SA. They were accompanied by four teachers identified as Mrs Ktanis, Miss Andonis, Mrs Vogiatzis and Mr Hall. When they arrived they were appointed to their cabins by their teachers. They quickly unpacked their belongings and ate their lunch. After lunch, they were separated into groups and began their activities. Activities for the first day included Initiative, where students had to move a wooden A-frame from a tree to rocks and back again without touching it and only using ropes. Then there was a Treasure Hunt, where students separated themselves into groups of 2-3 and followed a map to different points, answering a question sheet along the way. The last activity for the day was the Vertical Challenge, where two teams had to build up with crates, while one person climbed up. But teams can only put two blocks next to each other. After completing the tiring activities, the hospitable chefs cooked everyone a meal and after eating, the teachers inspired the students to put on a talent show. It is also rumoured that the students got little sleep and the next day was a struggle. Day two of the students trip to El Shaddai included Rock Climbing, Archery, Canoeing and The Giant Swing. Rock Climbing tested the student’s endurance and perseverance. They also received encouragement from their friends who were watching. Archery tested the students aim and accuracy, but only Sarah from Year 6 hit the bullseye. Canoeing tested the student’s teamwork and courage, because they all joined the canoes together, and ran across them trying to touch every canoe before their opponent. Finally, at a height of 10m, ‘The Giant Swing’, tested the student’s courage and perseverance. Only the bravest managed to swing from the top. On the last day students looked and held turtles, lizards and snakes during their Reptile session. They also got to see macro invertebrates and look at the Murray River Wetlands in Wetlands Walk. After these activities the students spent their time playing air hockey, pool and other sports before boarding the bus to go home. All the students were grateful to get home to their families and will never forget their amazing adventure at El Shaddai. Written by Thomas Psarombas, Year 6

    Ode to Camp

Oh, what fun we had Without our mum and dad

Activities came one after another like waves at the beach For afternoon tea there was the option of red apples,

    ripe banana or juicy peach.

None of the horrified campers could sleep Because they had a mysterious secret to keep

It was the most average talent show That absolutely no one needed to know.

Sounds of screaming came from the giant swing Especially when they went “fling”

Challenging and competitive competitions we competed Deviously dangerous dances we did, but we were

    defeated.

We were all sad to leave But some great skills we did receive

Oh camp, oh camp How much fun we had, we were all a standout Champ!

Written by Yebon Lim, Year 6

Year 5/6 Camp Reflection It was really freaky being so high on the vertical challenge. Half of my mind was saying take the step higher and the rest of me was saying NO!!! I thought the harness wasn’t going to hold me if I fell. It was the best feeling when I was on the ground. Alex, James and Shiraj reached the top of the vertical challenge and touched the metal beam. I felt really proud of them achieving their goal. Archery was amazing! I thought it would be hard but I was proven wrong. I was very close to hitting the bullseye! The giant swing was terrifying; being suspended 12 metres off the ground in a harness. I plucked up the courage to pull the rope which released the swing and the adrenaline rush was spectacular. Having a hold of a carpet python, a bearded dragon and a long necked turtle was a little fearful but I’m glad I did it. This was an amazing camp and I cannot thank my teachers enough for organising this. It was the best camp ever! Written by Dion Patsouris, Year 5

    MESSAGE FROM THE ASSISTANT PRINCIPAL

    Miss Stephanie Kosmetos

    Random Acts of Kindness

“Too often we underestimate the power of a touch, a smile, a kind word, a listening ear, an honest compliment or the smallest act of caring, all of which have the potential to turn a life around.” Leo Buscaglia When thinking of the word education, our minds often go for the obvious: reading, writing, calculating and experimenting. These facets of learning are vital to one’s education but so too are the ones which teach us to be human. This term, Year 4 students have been completing a random act of kindness each week to teach them and those around them the importance of being kind to each other, themselves and the environment they live in. As a result of these acts, students have developed their understanding of what it means to be selfless and nurturing members of the community. So far, we have made a thank you card for Miss Toumbas, read to the Year 1 students, created kindness coupons for those who are always willing to lend a helping hand and given unexpected gifts without the expectation of gifts in return. We look forward to continued learning in this area with the hope that by spreading kindness we will encourage others to do the same. Melissa Johns, Year 4 Pre-Service Teacher Flinders University
