10 months down; 2 to go.  And with that another year will be over.  It might be my imagination, or maybe it's a feature of getting older, but time sure is flying by.  When you're younger, you can't wait until that time you can become an adult with all the freedom that is implied by that.  Getting your license, getting out of school and being able to stay up late.  But when you get older you realize that it's going way too fast.  That's how I've been feeling lately, although in fairness, it's probably related to the fact I just turned 60.  So, I'm trying to get as much out of this life as I can.  In keeping with this thought, I'm leaving to go to Bangkok for 3 weeks in 5 days for a wedding.  I am not sure what to expect, as I honestly have not spent a lot of time with these people, but they seem nice.  When I was first invited, my initial thought was, “I won't know anybody and this will just be awkward."  But then I thought, "Are you crazy?  This will be a wonderful adventure and an opportunity to be a part of something special."  Throw in an exotic Asian country and you have all the ingredients of a trip of a lifetime.

Someone told me about a 5-day journey on an elephant through the golden triangle.  That sounds cool.  And of course, Thailand is known for its beautiful exotic islands.  I might even meet a lady.  Boy, that would be neat.

30 years ago, I did a circle Pacific trip which took me from Tahiti to New Zealand, Australia and then up to Bali, Singapore and Hong Kong.  At that time, the Walkman had introduced the opportunity to portably carry your music with you.  There are to this day songs that I hear that take me back to somewhere along that journey.  Plus I also discovered Australian artists that never gathered international fame.  I'm curious to find what music will provide the soundtrack to this trip.  This time I'm taking 2 computers in the form of a phone and a tablet.  Now, I can bring it all with me.  Quite amazing, really. The one thing I really love about this time of year is sleeping under the comforter listening to the rain pitter patter outside my window.  I find it interesting that in the winter months we hate the cold/snow/rain during the day but kind of enjoy it at night but in the summer love the sunshine in the daytime but hate lying on top of our sheets at night sweating like a pig.  So it goes.

BRUCE’S CORNERBC ARTIST HIGHLIGHT :

Gabriel Mark Hasselbach is one of BC’s musical gems, with mad skills on trumpet, flute, trombone, and vocals. He covers mainstream, contemporary smooth, and New Orleans style jazz and blues with a commanding presence and strong stage show tailored for respective audiences. The ubiquitous “horn-meister” likes to mix midcentury modern with the au courant, drawing on his ingrained New Orleans influences, those of icons like Freddie Hubbard, Blue Mitchell, & Chet Baker, and with more contemporary purveyors such as Rick Braun and Chris Botti. He wraps all his skills and influences into a punchy stage show that incorporates the best of those idioms as appropriate for the audience's taste and absorption, drawing from his 12 cd critically acclaimed releases. (He has had 7 Billboard hits and a long stay on JazzWeek charts).

He is at home in small group or big band, and swings stupendously on mainstream jazz, and funkifizes fantastically on contemporary material. Gabriel has recorded or performed with the likes of such varied artists as Michael Bublé (Gabriel performed with him extensively, recorded several albums with him, and produced the MB album ‘Dream’), Bob James, Jeff Lorber, Paul Brown, Bob Mintzer, Bob Baldwin, Greg Manning, Chuck Loeb, Brian Bromberg, Little Richard, George Benson, John Denver, Tom Scott, The O’Jays, Gino Vanelli, Heart, Darren Rahn, Marc Antoine, John Lee Hooker, Ronny Jordan, and Long John Baldry.

Catch Gabriel and his various trios at MIXT Lobby Lounge at the Sheraton Vancouver Guildford Hotel on November 2, 16 and 30 from 6-10.

ROCK N ROLL FACTS 1. In 1991, during a period of only six weeks, five classic modern rock albums were

released: Metallica’s Black Album, Pearl Jam’s Ten, Guns N’Roses’ Use Your Illusion, Nirvana’s Nevermind and Red Hot Chili Peppers’ Blood Sugar Sex Magic.

The last two were released on the same day.

2. Pink Floyd’s Dark Side of the Moon earnings were invested in a floating restaurant, a fudge-making hotel, a computer game, a film nobody saw, a skateboard company, a car hire business, and a children’s shoe factory. All complete failures. They fled to France as tax exiles and recorded The Wall.

3. Queen’s guitarist, Brian May, has a PhD in Astrophysics.

4. System of a Down, The Beatles, Guns ‘N Roses, 2Pac and DMX are the only artists to have ever had 2 studio albums debut at #1 in the same year.

5. Black Sabbath wrote the hit song “Paranoid” in 20 minutes to fill the remaining 3 minutes of time on their upcoming album. It is now regarded as one of the greatest

rock and heavy metal songs of all time.

6. Pink Floyd’s “Dark Side of the Moon” spent 741 weeks on the billboard charts, from 1973 to 1988, longer than any other album.

FP FOOD FOR THOUGHT All quotes by Deepak Chopra

Our future is created from choices we make every minute.

To make the right choices in life, you have to get in touch with your soul. To do this, you need to experience solitude, which most people are afraid of, because in the silence you hear the truth and know the

solutions.

Life gives you plenty of time to do whatever you want to do if you stay in the present moment.
