contained what would become his most widely known and covered song, “Hallelujah”. Leonard’s first album was released in 1967 while he was approaching his mid-thirties. It contained the classic  “Suzanne” and a touching “So Long Marianne”, written for his girlfriend and muse of the sixties Marianne Ihlen. Marianne passed away earlier in 2016 and upon hearing of her frail state, Leonard wrote a farewell letter to her….. "I think I will follow you very soon. Know that I am so close behind you that if you stretch out your hand, I think you can reach mine”.

feelings for each other went beyond “just friends”. So, in transitioning from band-mates to soul-mates, Dan and Rosalie Sonsalla were married in 1989 and together became the founding members of Black Rose.Dan became interested in playing guitar when he was 12 years old, after hearing the guitar solo on the song “Shock Me” from the KISS Alive album. His love for hard rock music was evident, and he became inspired by bands such as KISS, Led Zeppelin and Iron Maiden. Rosalie always had a desire to sing and remembers telling her best friend at 8 years old that she was going to be a singer when she grew up. In her early teens, she heard the Fleetwood Mac song “Dreams” on the radio, and was fascinated with the melodic, mysterious sounds the song carried. She became inspired by the poetic, abstract writing style of Fleetwood Mac and in particular Stevie Nicks. When meshed together, the combination of Dan’s harder edge sound and Rosalie’s poetic, melodic influences bring an interesting mix to the sound of Black Rose. The band believes wholeheartedly that music is the essence of life; it can bring you up when you are feeling down, bring light to your darkness, and can make the best times in life shine brighter than the sun. A favourite quote that they live by is “Do what you love; love what you do”.

While Dan and Rose chose to put their early music career on hold in order to raise their family (the couple have two daughters and now a son-in-law), the couple have re-emerged on the music scene with a renewed passion of making music together. Always trying to put a creative flare on things, their song selection will bring you classic favourites with just a touch of that Black Rose flavour! Catch Black Rose at West Beach on Saturday March 25th!

Listening to music and watching people perform music are obviously two different things. Listening to music is pretty straight forward. For the sake of argument let’s just say that listening uses one sense. But watching an artist(s) perform and getting the most out of it requires at least two senses. Sight, sound and in the case of pyrotechnics, smell. Fairly simple. And while I strongly support just listening to the music, adding the eyes completely changes the dynamics and on occasion creates memories that last a lifetime. For example, I have listened to the album The Wall or songs from that album hundreds of times over the last 30 some years, but watching Roger Waters perform The Wall is the musical highlight of my life.

So, the next time you watch live music or a performance these are some of the things you could watch for. For this let's first focus on the eyes only and ignore the ears. To start, we consider the lighting. So important to create the atmosphere. A solo performance with the proper lighting is so much better. And it is not only the stage that must be lit properly; the actual venue needs lighting that creates a certain atmosphere. Too bright and I feel like I’m in my friend’s basement with no windows. Second, we consider the costume. Although I’m not a big fan of matching or contrasting outfits, it’s hard to argue with the success that Captain and Tennille or Donnie and Marie had. But I’ve always been more comfortable with the Bruce Springsteen look myself. Black jeans and a white shirt. Simple and classic. Obviously the ladies create their own look and I am not stupid enough to go down that road, although I’m fairly certain that it was not the Captain who chose those flowery puffy shirts with the matching shoes. So now we focus on the actual performance. A good ballad might require standing in one place with the spotlight on you wearing black jeans and a classic white shirt. On the other hand, when rocking it out, it might require some jumping up and down or violent shaking of the head. To me, if the performer starts bouncing around in time with the music it indicates that he/she is into it and I appreciate the passion. For instance, if you have ever watched Brad playing his drums, he has his head back and shaking, his eyes closed and it draws you in. When Sami starts bouncing around it gets the place rocking and the people up dancing. But then you watch Nathan playing his guitar and he is in one place and focused and you can’t help watching his talent. I’m usually not into theatrics but The Wall was quite a show with videos playing on the bricks and the wall being built and torn down within the show. I saw Alice Cooper chase a giant tooth around the stage with a giant toothbrush. I enjoyed that experience and also enjoyed watching Mark Knopfler stand alone in the middle of an empty stage and just play his guitar.

Everyone enjoy March and a particularly good Newsletter this month and next month we’ll talk about the history of whistling.

BRUCE’S CORNER

It was this past November that we learned of Leonard Cohen’s passing. That night I rode to his house, just off of St. Laurent boulevard in Montréal, where a small crowd of about 50 people lit candles and sang songs under a  drizzly atmosphere. Tributes from around the world for the Pope of Canadian Musical Poets came forth in the following days.

It all started with an ad in the Georgia Straight newspaper. In the early summer of 1987, two young and eager musicians were looking to start a rock band. Little did they know that when they met during an audition on July 1st that it would be the start of a lifelong journey together. While the audition brought them together as band mates, they soon realized that their

show that I attended. Leonard, who for most of his musical career enjoyed his most favourable crowds in Europe, toured successfully worldwide in his later years up until December 2013. I first saw him live at Massey Hall in Toronto in 1988 and the last time in Montreal in 2012 accompanied by my good neighbour, the fine songstress Rusula. He wasn’t known to dance but could move his celestial verse to a beat that thoroughly gratified his followers.Possibly Dylan's only peer in that genre of guitar playing poets. A prince of bummers, a divine figure who acknowledged the crack in everything. That’s how the light gets in, he said. He spoke just like he wrote. With eloquence and a seemingly secret ancient wisdom. So long comrade, you will still be called upon when your words are needed to resonate what drifts around the soul.

My earliest recollection of being directly exposed to his music was a vinyl version of the Various Positions album, which ironically was not initially released by his record company in the U.S.A. because of concerns of its ability to sell, even though it
