THE BEST IN SOUTHERN HOSPITALITYFor over a decade, greater Fredericksburg,Virginia has been making its name as “thesouthern destination” for golfers lookingfor early spring and late fall trip options.Weather is milder than that of northerndestinations or destinations at the samelatitude, because of being inland, nohigher elevation affect and less wind.

The thing that sets this destination apart is itseagerness to please and “Southern StyleHospitality.” Golfers are greeted warmly withred carpet treatment, and the destinationexperiences far fewer golfers than theoverpopulated Myrtle Beach destination. Thenews is traveling, and it’s no longer a best keptsecret now. Golfers can rest assured however, while there is growth, southern hospitality inthis region will never change. It is why weconsider it one of our favorite destinationsand some of our best partnerships with golfcourses and accommodations.

ALL ROADS LEAD TOFREDERIckSBURG!Conveniently located just south ofWashington DC and along I-95, golferscan access the destination from a variety of

cities throughout the East. Some golferstravel southbound along I-81 to I-66 andRt. 17 and some travel east of I-95 throughsouthern Maryland via Rt. 301 intoVirginia. No matter your origination point, this destination is an easy drive, far lessthan that of its South-Atlanticcounterparts and sure to deliver. Golferswill find that this region is a verycentralized point for friends driving andeven flying, thanks to the availability of 3airports – Reagan National, Dulles andBWI. If golf is your thing to do for areunion, then Fredericksburg, Virginia isone to seriously consider.

FREDERIckSBURG’S I-95GOLF TRAILOn the northern end of this golf trail isOld Hickory, in Woodbridge, Virginia. It’s a great golf course to either start yourgolf trip with or end it, or combines wellwhen staying in the Stafford area at theBest Western Aquia. As you drive southinto Stafford County, you will find several

golf courses – The Gauntlet, CannonRidge and Augustine.

As you travel south towards Fredericksburg, you will find the majority of the hotels atexit 130 where Central Park Plaza resideswith 100 shops and restaurants combined. The hotels at this exit include the BestWestern Fredericksburg on Plank Road, theNuevo Inn across the street (formerly theQuality Inn) and the Hampton Inn,conveniently tucked within Central Park.To the west of this exit is Meadows Farms, not far off of Rt. 3, while to the east of thisexit off of Rt. 3 is Cameron Hills.

option is Pendleton which resides only 10minutes off of Exit 110 on I-95 and is worththe drive. All together, this region offers 5hotels and 8 golf courses, giving golfers aweek’s worth of options if desired. Experiencethe Virginia I-95 Golf Trail for yourself!

BROAD cOURSE SELEcTIONOne of the nicest things about this regionis the broad diversity of golf courses. Whilethe list may seem small, the courses offeredin this destination are some of Virginia’sbest and vary greatly. There are traditionallayouts such as Augustine, Cameron Hills,Cannon Ridge, The Gauntlet, Lee’s Hilland Old Hickory. There is the truly uniquelayout of Meadows Farms, a mix oftraditional with memorable. And there isPendleton holding the only title of a linksstyle layout.

Augustine reopened last fall after asignificant re-haul of its fairways, greens tobent grass and a renovation of theclubhouse. Comments thus far fromgolfers have been very positive and we feelconfident that this golf course will deliveranother high-end golf experience thatgolfer’s desire. This golf course is run bythe same team that runs Old Hickory, asolid team known for upholding higher

standards for conditions and service.Augustine gets you right from the start, with their infamous split fairway with alarge tree and long fescue grass growingright through the middle. You pick yourside and hope for the best!

Cameron Hills is a surprisingly nice layoutand incredible value for golfers looking for acooler experience within the shade of trees.Additionally, it offers some rollingtopography unlike many of the golf tracks inthe region and its proximity to the PatuxentRiver and literal waterfront watering holes, makes this course even more desirable. Thiscourse has fair tee placement, goodconditions with a natural design to it, butwithout over-manufactured obstacles andtricks. Don’t get confused however withthinking you will be bored playing CameronHills, as each hole is different and will keepup your interest.

Cannon Ridge has long been consideredone of the favorites within Virginia andthe Fredericksburg region with its bentgrass fairways. A solid track that is less thana decade old, it offers golfers five sets oftees to allow golfers the level of challengethey may or may not want. Some tees areplaced to force a carry over a watershedarea with long brush, while some tees give

you the advantage on the other side. Youwill also experience a different feel withthe two varying nines, which will give youvariety and interest during your entireround. The modern clubhouse offersgolfers a casual environment for the 19thhole, with the option for packageddinners, for those interested.

The Gauntlet, so appropriately named as aPB Dye layout, has been challenging golfersfor years. Designed in typical PB style, thiscourse wraps around and utilizes thenatural waterfront challenges of aninety-acre lake. You will want to pick yourtees and clubs carefully, as a wrongdecision could result in a painful roundthat will require a second chance atredemption! Some masochistic golfersactually design their day with that logic inmind – with the first round being the ‘play

it safe’ bet and the second round played asbest ball and nearly anything goes!

Lee’s Hill is the regions oldest and longeststanding golf course, designed years ago as asemi-private club for a housing community.Over the years, it changed hands a few timesand saw a decline in rounds andmembership. Three years ago the coursechanged hands and it has its own Cinderellastory of sort. It has one of the highestmemberships of local semi-private clubs, itsconditions are the best the course has everhad, as a result rounds and service haveincreased. This traditional and solid layoutis a must play in order to see how the regionfirst got its start as a golfers town.

Meadows Farms is the region’s mostunique track, certainly not a golf coursethat you would find in your own neck ofthe woods. To begin with, it offers golfers28 holes of golf. That’s right, 28 and not27, figuring that many golfers need to brushoff the dust with a practice hole. Designedby its owner to bring golf experiences fromaround the country to the everyday golfer, each hole is an original or a knock off ofsignature holes of renowned golf courses.Strategically priced for that same golfer,Meadows strives to deliver a great value andtruly unique experience that has gotten theattention of Golf Digest, GolfStyle, andPenthouse magazines.

A newer course addition is Pendleton, which opened within the last decade by alocal developer. It provides golfers with avery private setting with only a few homesbuilt around it and covers a very large spacewhich accentuates its links style layout. Thisis a peaceful round to enjoy, but still withchallenge. It’s just you and the ball (plusnumerous bunkers), thanks to the quietsurroundings and more remote setting. Inthe peak warmer season, the course’s longfescue grass will threaten to swallow you andyour ball up, as a visual reminder of howimportant it is to stay on the fairway.

Last, but certainly not least, is Old Hickory– a traditional golf course with asemi-private feel and more formalclubhouse. It offers a feeling of being amember for the day, as it’s a favorite of DCgolfers and transients in addition to thelocal golfers that live in the housing that

The Gauntlet has madeits mark, receiving recognitions such as GolfDigest’s “Top 10 New Courses to Play in theUS” and Washington Golf Monthly’s “100Best Courses to Play in the Mid-Atlantic.”The Gauntlet aims to please the mostdemanding players with 4 sets of tees.

Meadows Farms is a‘must-play’ because of itsunique layout. This courseis “…a cornucopia of theunconventional” asdescribed by Golf DigestJanuary 2009 and features:the longest hole in the U.S. (841-yard par 6);the waterfall hole that requires a carryoverdrive to land on the green sitting atop of a45-foot tall waterfall. Owner Bill Meadows“…wanted the course to be so unusual thatevery hole would be like starting a newcourse.” Three sets of 9-holes allow golfers toplay all day just minutes from Fredericksburg!

The greens feature A4 bentgrass, known for making fast greens. Manyof the holes force golfers to measure theirrisks and rewards.
