Client Angela Donohue, hairdressing tutor Maria Tribley, beauty tutor Lindsey Richard-son and beauty student Kim Heslop.A hairdressing salon’s free hair and beauty treatment day has raised more than £600 for specialist equipment for Chilton youngster, Kieron
Richardson, who suffers from the rare and incurable Juvenile Batten Disease.Lecturers and students at Bishop Auckland College’s hair and beauty
department held the event last week in the salon at the Woodhouse Lane campus to help nine-year-old Kyran.Last September family and friends set up a fundraising team to raise awareness and much needed funds for Kyran’s ongoing needs.Bishop Auckland College hairdressing lecturer, Maria Tribley, had the idea for the event to help the appeal after seeing a television broadcast about Kyran. More than 100 clients on the day donated cash totalling £600.43.Kyran’s mum Debbie said: “A big thank you to Maria Tribley, staff, students and customers from Bishop Auckland College for organising the hair and beauty day and for being so generous with donations.“The money raised will be used to purchase specialist equipment for Kyran’s new bedroom and will enrich his remaining years.”Anyone who wishes to donate direct to the appeal can do so by visiting www.kyranrichmondfundraising.co.uk

Although you left a while ago sometimes, throughout the year, for just a fleeting
moment, I forget that you’re not there to share a cosy chat or give me sound
advice, to ask about the things I’ve planned and if
my day was nice. That’s why life doesn’t seem the same, for when yours had to end
the world lost someone wonderful (Ken) and I lost

On Friday 15th June, the grounds maintenance contractor attended Pentlands Park, Chilton, and discovered that one of the gates was completely broken along with some of the fencing. “This, sadly it seems, is the result of mindless vandalism and has occurred some time from 12th June to the morning of the 14th June,” said a Town Council spokesperson. “The Town Council are in touch with Durham County Council and are
hopeful that there is some CCTV footage. If there is evidence this will then be passed to the police to investigate and hopefully the culprit(s) will be dealt with accordingly.“The Council will of course need to organise repair or replacement which should really be an avoidable cost. “If anyone has any in-formation relating to this vandalism please telephone Chilton Town Council on 01388 721788,” requested the spokesper-son.

The Olympic Torch may not have passed through Ferryhill during its tour of the North East, but that didn’t stop Ferryhill being ably represented by the town’s own torchbearers.Mr Fred Haswell of Ferryhill sent in the photograph, far left, of his daughter, Maggie Glastonbury, carrying the torch in Bristol where she is a prolific fundraiser for cancer and children’s charities. And pictured left is Ferry-hill’s Richie Howe, who was nominated by his mother’s work colleague, Joyce Sewell, from Darlington.Ritchie, who delivers the Chapter in his area, carried the torch in Darlington, and was nominated for his caring personality.

Sweat upon his brow trembling with fear,He clenched his fists and drew a breath,But not a friend was near,Five paces back he stamped his boots hard upon the ground,He heard a deafening roar and his chest began to pound,This could be life or death and more than he could bear,He made a fierce run and struck as hard as he ever dare,He heard the roar, felt the pain and didn’t dare look up,But he’d scored the penalty against the Germans and England won the cup.

What a lot of words seem to be changingI really don’t know why,Some like literally, basically and absolutely are misused,And it makes me want to sigh,Pardon has been replaced by sorry,And cheers instead of goodbye,The toilet is now the loo, I honestly can’t think why. When all is said and done, Is now at the end of the day.Even see you later doesn’t seem right and just something to say.A coat of paint is now a lick and sounds a bit daft to me,And on the box really means the telly,Or what’s on the good old TV.Excuse me, doesn’t mean that, It means move out of the way. With respect, really means we have something untoward to say.Dinner has turned to lunch and teatime into dinner.Breakfast’s still there, but supper has gone.Maybe the missing meal will make us all a bit thinner.

Simon George Ward, aged 23, of Eldon Terrace, Ferryhill, pleaded guilty to a charge of resisting a WPC in the execution of her duty when he appeared alongside Steven Maitland at Newton Aycliffe Magis-trates’ Court. Maitland pleaded guilty to the same charge and also to a second charge of criminal damage to a double-glazed window, belonging to Jackson
Lettings, and to a vase and television stand belonging to a tenant in the property in Spennymoor. The court heard that on 21st April, the two had been drinking with three friends in the house when trouble broke out. The two were ejected from the house but got back inside after Maitland had picked up a brick and caused the damage.Officers were called and
a spray had to be used on both defendants before their arrests. In mitigation it was stated that the two had little rec-ollection of events and that they were embarrassed, remorseful and ashamed of their actions that day. Both were sentenced to 12 months conditional discharges and in addition, Ward was ordered to pay £85 costs and Maitland to pay £630 in compensation.

Dear Editor,
On the weekend of the Queen’s Diamond Jubilee neighbours and friends at Aidens Walk got together for a street party.
Residents donned raincoats and umbrellas to avoid the persistent heavy drizzle to carry on their celebrations. This occasion showed how good neighbours can pull together to celebrate special occasions.
The best decorated house was judged by the Queen (aka Debbie Poulter of Witton Road) who also very kindly donated prizes from her Bronzing Beauty Salon in Brancepeth Road .
We would like to take this opportunity to thank everyone who helped to make this a great day, but a special big thank you goes to: Pound Smart for donating a generous amount of children’s prizes; Broom Nursery for the loan of play equipment; Mr Norman Marshall for helping with tables and to William and Kate for standing at the window of number 4 all day without a word of complaint. Yours Sincerely,Residents of Aidens Walk
Dear Editor,
The refurbishment of the children’s play equipment at Mainsforth Sport’s Complex looks very nice. I was in the vicinity as the painters were putting the finishing touches to it and they have done an excellent job.
One of the painters was none other than Martin Burleigh, the famous goalkeeper for Newcastle United in the days of Malcom Macdonald.
Like myself, he’s looking a bit older, but it was good to have a chat with him and talk about “the good old days.”
Yours Sincerely,Geoff Gregg, Tursdale (ex-Ferryhill).
Earlier this year, members of Chilton Town Council discussed at length the Queen’s Diamond Jubilee and how to mark this memorable occasion.Members decided to work in partnership with Chilton Primary School after being approached for funding to support their school cel-ebration. The Town Council provided 90 red, white and blue balloons, Union Jack hand
flags and a commemora-tive medal for every child attending the school. On Wednesday 30th May 2012, Chilton Primary School held an open-air party to celebrate the Diamond Jubilee. “It really was a party atmosphere with the children dressed in red, white or blue happily waving their flags,” said a spokesperson. “The children thoroughly enjoyed the array of activities par-
ticularly the magic show, stilt walking, den building and were truly mesmerised as the 90 balloons were released into the air.” As the Spennymoor School Band played, the children proudly sang the National Anthem and waved their flags. During the festivities the Mayor, Councillor Elizabeth Bruce, presented each child with a commemora-tive medal.

A Glow Worm Hunt will take place on Saturday 23rd June at 10.30pm to Sunday 24th June at 1am at West Cornforth, Ferryhill as part of celebrations taking place nationwide for National Insect Week which runs from 25th June to 1st July.Natural England and its partners, Lafarge A&C UK and the North East Environ-mental Records Information Centre (ERIC), will pay a late evening visit to Thris-lington NNR in search of the elusive glow worms which inhabit the unique wildlife site, weather permitting. The event has been organised to coincide with the Royal Entomological Society’s National Insect Week which this year, inspired by The Olympics in London during 2012 and the Diamond Jubilee of the Society’s Patron HM The Queen, is celebrating all that is great about British insects.National Insect Week is
a biennial initiative to promote awareness of the value of a diverse insect world to the environment. An interactive website www.nationalinsectweek.co.uk gives visitors all the information they need to get involved, from finding out about events taking place in their area, to a
photography competition and advice on bringing more British insects into our gardens.Luke Tilley, National Insect Week coordinator, said: “There are lots of events taking place across the country to mark National Insect Week this year which is really exciting given how special 2012 is for Great Britain.“There’s a huge range of activities being staged by local and regional wildlife organisations which will enable children and adults to explore the wonderful world of insects for themselves.”For more information about the Glow Worm Hunt contact Joe Davies on 0191 5860004 or visit www.na-tionalinsectweek.co.uk and click ‘What’s Going On’.Booking is essential by calling 0191 5860004. Anyone wishing to par-ticipate is advised to wear sturdy footwear.

This year, Woodham Technology College’s Art Exhibition of GCSE and BTEC work will see the renowned North East artist Sarah Jane Szikora visit the college. Woodham’s students, many of which are from Ferryhill and Chilton, have often drawn inspiration from Szikora’s work which is a humorous take on challeng-

ing subjects such as eating disorders, our obsession with appearance and cosmetic surgery.Although students at Woodham study a huge array of diverse artists, both traditional and con-temporary, the students have been especially taken with Szikora’s work and they, along with their teachers are buzzing with
the excitement of meeting her.The exhibition will take place on Tuesday, 26th June from 3.30pm to 6.30pm and will showcase the work of students leaving the college this year. There will be a huge variety of work on display with media ranging from drawing and painting to paper-cuts, sellotape sculpture and mirror mosaic. The themes running through the students’ work are mostly self-directed and as such, demonstrate a delightful reflection of the students themselves.Themes range from cars and fashion to Mexico’s Day of the Dead, invisimals and one student’s entire family tree. The exhibition is an open event and there will be refreshments and nibbles available.
‘Big Girl, Little City’ is one of the artworks on view at Woodham Technology College’s end of term exhibition of GCSE and BTEC students’ work.
Ferryhill library recently held a Jubilee Craft session which offered par-ticipants the opportunity to enter its Stamp Design competition.
The library would like to thank all entrants and congratulates its winners: Robyn Duke-Parker, aged 4, and 9 year-old Jake Mitchell.

Year 8 students will be involved in various activities on 10th, 11th and 12th July, that will reach out to several residents and businesses in the area, creating valuable links between the college and the community it serves. As part of this project, year 8 are creating a Dragon’s Den style event which will tie in very closely with the Olympic values of respect, excellence, friendship, courage, determination, inspiration and equality.Pupils will work in teams over the three days producing and pitching items for marketing. Both the items and the marketing methods will be based around the skills and values that the global event of the Olympics promotes and will link them to the skills and
values needed in everyday life, particularly in such a close knit community. The college plans to invite members of the local area to help with the project and to be part of the audience for the final presentations. “The hope is that by involving the residents from the area in a project such as this we can show everyone how much we value teamwork and being part of a community,” said a spokesperson, adding: “We also hope it will promote the fact that the values shown by all of the athletes in the Olympics are also our community values.”The year group also hopes to make close links with local businesses, enabling both sides to gain a better understanding of each others’ working practices.Meanwhile, the college will be presenting some of the West End’s biggest shows in July. The summer production is a tribute to all things musical, theatrical and
downright dramatic with songs and scenes from some of the West End’s most famous shows. The cast will be performing numbers from shows such as Oliver!, Wicked, The Phantom of The Opera, Les Miserables, Hairspray and many many more favourites. There will also be scenes from plays such as Blood Brothers and Sister Act.The show will be staged in the college on Monday and Tuesday, 16th and 17th July and tickets are available from the college for £2.50. Curtain is 6.30pm and doors will open no earlier than 6.15pm. A tuck shop with refreshments will be available at the interval and raffle tickets will be on sale at the door. There will be a third per-formance on Wednesday 18th of July at Ferryhill Methodist Chapel. Tickets (£3.00, to include refreshments at interval) and information are available from a chapel representative.
College calls on community
On 28th May, David Bruce walked into the Co-op Store in Trimdon Village picked up a case of Fosters Lager and left without paying. Two hours later, at around 6pm, he returned to the store and repeated the offence. Both incidents were caught on CCTV. The 18-year-old, of Watt Street, Ferryhill, requested that four further matters of shop-lifting from stores in Ferryhill and Wingate be taken into consideration.
Bruce is currently subject to a suspended sentence and alcohol treatment programme imposed by the Crown Court and, as these offences pre-dated the order, he was therefore not in breach of the programme. Magistrates at Newton Aycliffe sentenced the youth to a 12 months conditional discharge and ordered him to pay £73.93 in compensation to the stores.
Lager thefts
Craig Britton, aged 34, of High Street, West Cornforth, was due before magistrates at Newton Aycliffe to face four charges of fraud. It is alleged that between June and October 2011, in Bishop Auckland, Britton used the names of previous occupants of his property on four separate occasions in order to make gains in excess of £1500.
Michael George Holmes, aged 30, of Keswick Drive, Spennymoor, faces a charge that, on 8th August last year, after been stopped by police, he failed to give his name and address or details of the vehicle’s owner. The incident occurred whilst Holmes was driving a Citroen Saxo in Brunel Street, Ferryhill.
