This term CSC Girls Academy was put to the test against other students and

members of the community at the annual Yirara Girls Academy Quiz Night. With

topics including General Knowledge, Indigenous Knowledge and Geography the

girls had a great time. Impressing everyone and coming third overall for the

evening. It was a great fun filled evening followed by a dinner together and most

of all supporting Yirara to fundraise for their upcoming trip.

Last Friday we had athletes from the Indigenous Marathon Project (IMP) come

and visit the academy and speak to the Year 10 students. The athletes came with

their amazing stories of where they come from, their individual stories and why

they wanted to become part of this amazing project. The IMP athletes were in

town to run 30km for the upcoming New York and Boston marathon. We would

like to give a special thank you to Kate Axten for organising the visit and most of

all well wishes and good luck for her upcoming IMP events.

We would like to also wish all Year 12s the best of luck in their exams and

completing final assessments. It is such an amazing time to see you all striving

toward your goal in completing Year 12.

Samantha Hill & Vicki Trindle - Girls Academy

Term 3 has been an interesting and full term, our with young women coming close to

graduating Year 12, amazing sporting achievements, quiz nights, our Top End Trip to

Darwin and a visit from the athletes in the Indigenous Marathon Project.

Our Inter-Academy Top End Trip to Darwin was held with both CSC and CMS students

participating in the trip. It kicked of with a drive to Mataranka and then on to Darwin

where we met up with other academies and participated in many activities whilst we

were up there. The girls were tested at the Michael Long Centre where they had a

training session and then used the ice baths to recover. The highlights were the inter

-academy competition down at the waterfront where academies made teams and

faced off in events as well as volleyball and the Mindil Beach markets.

Girls Academy is proud to have many amazing athletes in the academy. However, we

have two students who have achieved amazing accolades recently. Shoneeka Abbott

received two awards recently one being the prestigious, winning the Northern

Territory’s Most Valuable Player award for the Central Allies team as well as the CAFL

Rising Star award. It is the first time a woman has received this award.

Janaya Kopp is another outstanding footballer who has played a pivotal role in her

Pioneer Women’s team success. She recently received the leading goal kicker award

for the CAFL Womens League, kicking 23 goals for the season. It is an honour to have

such strong and athletic women in our academy.

Duke of Edinburgh Awards Action for Year 12s in Tennant

The Year 12s have been really busy trying to get through their last pieces of work so they can graduate at the end of the school year. For many of the Year 12s the Duke of Edinburgh Awards are a great way to earn extra credits towards their NTCET requirements. In week four a group of ten Year 12s headed north for a two night camp in Tennant Creek to help log their activities for their Duke of Edinburgh Awards.

The Academy members played a great game of basketball at the Tennant Creek High School, took on the Bill Allen Lookout in a 10km morning bike ride, enjoyed an informative tour underground of the Battery Hill mines, learnt plenty about the history of the Warumungu people from the Nyinkka Nyunyu Art and Culture Centre and also had many laughs and good times as well.

Cultural Collaboration

as Barker College Travel to Black Tank

Barker College is a prestigious high school based in the heart of Sydney’s booming metropolis. As part of their Outdoor Education program this year a group of Year 9s ventured from their cosy surroundings to rough it in the Red Centre with some of the Year 10s from our and Yirara Academies. It was an eye opening experience for all involved.

The Barker College students were great and tackled the task of making bush medicine and learning about the land with great enthusiasm and gusto. The students had lots of time to get to know one another as well and while it was often clear that the fellas came from two very different places, the smiles and enjoyment from everyone was clear to see. We look forward to linking up with Baker College in the future and potentially visiting them in the big smoke in the years to come.

CSC Battle it out for 3v3 Supremacy

At the end of Term 2 the our Academy hosted a 3v3 basketball competition to determine who the undisputed

Kings of the Court are! The action was fast paced and the highlights were plentiful as each team battled it out for

the right to advance through to the Grand Final. Aaron Kopp and his team were the early front runners and

showed impressive form while Levi Thomas proved to be a dominant defensive presence for his side blocking

shots at will and even throwing down a couple big dunks.

Eventually it came down to two sides as the classy trio of Luke Foster, Jamal Lynch and Eddie Campbell took on

the powerhouse squad of Francis Bruce, Copelan Ford and Shai Forrester in the Grand Final. It was an epic

encounter coming down to the wire but the court vision and experience of Francis and his crew was too much to

overcome and they ended up being crowned champions of the court. The people’s champion Eddie Campbell

was awarded MVP of the comp as his team first attitude was on display for all to see.

Sand and Spikes reign down in the morning

Tyson Carmody, David Thomas & Arti Davis Tahare - Clontarf Academy

The CSC Clontarf Academy has been participating in early

morning Volleyball on Thursday mornings during Term 3.

It has been a fun and challenging new addition to the

weekly routine and the lads have enjoyed trying out

something different despite the often chilly morning

conditions. Reggie Gallagher and Tarrant Maher have

shown particularly good glimpses of natural ability and

everyone else on the team is always up to give it a good

crack.

We have formed a particularly entertaining rivalry with

the legends from the CSC Girls Academy and even

though they usually win the banter, the competitiveness

is worth the price of admission. We hope to continue the

strong numbers and participation in the morning

volleyball comp as it has been a great extra activity for

the fellas to try out.

Prince Edward Visits

Prince Edward and his entourage met our Year 12 students involved

with the program and had a chat about what they’ve been up to as

part of their Duke of Edinburgh Award program.

The Duke of Edinburgh activities at our Academy have included a 2

night camp to Tennant Creek and many community services like

Clean up Australia Day and the Yeperenye Shop Assist at

Woolworths. The Duke of Edinburgh program has allowed us to use

the Clontarf activities to help our Year 12 students earn valuable

credits towards their graduation.

The Central region was incredibly lucky to welcome a member of the Royal Family, His Royal Highness Prince

Edward to Alice Springs for the 60th year celebrations of the Duke of Edinburgh Awards program which our Year

12 fellas have been completing as part of completing their NTCET.

Wesfarmers Annual Visit another Success

Wesfarmers have a long standing relationship with the

Clontarf Foundation and over the past couple of years

have brought a group of their staff to Alice Springs for

cultural experiences and to see first-hand what the

Clontarf Foundation gets up to day to day. This time

around they attended a morning training session

which saw our brothers from the CMS and Yirara

Clontarf Academies square off in a hotly contested

football match with our fellas umpiring and cooking

breakfast for the keen on lookers.

After a great spectacle our guests were treated to a tour of our Academy room hosted by Keithan Martin and

Tarrant Maher before having the opportunity to make bush medicine using local ingredients. On top of this

Wesfarmers were kind enough to donate two ‘R U OK’ benches which sit proudly in our Academy Room and

given the importance placed on the mental health of the Academy members will be of great use to anyone who

needs a chat about whatever is bothering them.

Big congratulations to Year 12 student Riana Naufahu performing as ‘Ceenah’, for her

outstanding performances at the recent NT Music School’s Beat Festival.

It is the second time our Year 12 student, Riana, has headlined the NT Music School

gala concert in Darwin and this time it was extra special.

Her original song Soldier was the centrepiece of the show accompanied by 32-piece

orchestra , 300-voice choir and her own accomplished guitar playing to audiences of

3000 people over 3 nights at the Darwin Entertainment Centre.

“She stunned the audience with glamour and quality,” said NT Music School Principal

Bill Grose.

“As well as being an audience favourite, she was also a favourite with the hundreds

of primary school students who sang her song with her.”

Ceenah will also perform Soldier with choir and orchestra at the Alice Beat at

Araluen Arts Centre on Thursday 31 October 7 - 8:30pm. Tickets are on sale at box

office.

Interschool Mountain Bike Challenge

Well done to our competitors in the inaugural Interschool

Mountain Bike Challenge this week - Damon Karpany (17th),

James Taylor (19th), Jason Peace & Junior Wallace. 20

kilometres around the Telegraph Station tracks was taxing

yet excellent experience for all involved. Special mention to

Junior Wallace who assisted me as we provided emergency

first aid to a fellow competitor out on the track.

On Wednesday 11 September, ten students participated in the inaugural Alice Springs Democracy Dash where they raced to complete a

scavenger hunt around the town CBD. The event was designed to teach senior students about democracy, the important work of

democratic institutions and the responsibilities of people who live in a democracy.

Starting in the Alice Plaza, students began the race by learning how the NT Electoral Commission counted ballot papers to determine

whether Donald Trump, Vladmir Putin, Kim Jong-un or Xi Jinping would be our next leader. While students were not impressed with any

of the options, they respected the democratic process and can announce that Kim Jong-un is the new Prime Minister of Australia. (With

any luck, their maths was slightly off!)

Racing up the stairs, students then learnt about the important work

carried out by the Aboriginal Interpreter Service and the Department

of the Chief Minister before dashing off to the Supreme Court House.

Marcus White, described as a fair and impartial judge, proceeded

over the trial while Josh Preston provided witness statements. He

was defended by hot shot lawyers Daemon Polanski, Tyrell Squires

and Harrison Cooper.

Following a brief stop at the Residency where students became

stumped as to why the Queen would want to visit Alice Springs, they

proceeded on to the Police Station. This stop was the highlight of the

race for the team as they got to witness Ricky ‘Quick Hands’ Joseph,

a well-known pen thief who has terrorized teacher pen supplies at

CSC for the past 9 months, finally be apprehended and brought to

justice.

The race concluded at the Town Council chambers where we sat in on a

practice debate regarding the laws surrounding cats on leashes and concluded

with a sausage sizzle lunch. Despite not winning the race under questionable

circumstances, at the end of the day, education was the true winner.

Kahu Birkholz described the event as “lots of fun” and said “yes, I would do it

again next year.” These students are now equipped with the knowledge to

fulfill their responsibilities in our democratic society. Now we just have to

worry about them getting their license!

Imagine it is 1943. The world is at war with fascism, and for the first time, Australia is at serious risk of being attacked by

foreign forces during war times. This is the same scenario presented to students in Miss Forrester’s Year 10 History class,

where they tasked with investigating whether or not Centralian Senior College was adequately prepared for a 1940s air raid.

Imagining they were part of the Australian Government Department of Defense, students worked in groups to examine a

series of 1940s cinema advertisements, newsletter articles and pamphlets to identify what precautions were used to protect

individuals and families during enemy air raids. Using this information, students created check lists, donned their high-vis

hard hats and began investigating the school.

Students first interviewed Principal Tony Collins and year 10 coordinator Helen Wilkinson regarding the availability of

blackout curtains, torches and gas masks before they embarked on an audit of the school. During their audit, students in-

vestigated the science labs, the photography dark room and the basement.

In their reports addressed to the WHS committee, students made a number of recommendations including the purchase of

300 torches, stocking blankets and supplies in the basement, and the installation of blackout curtains. Thanks to the hard

work of this dedicated team of students, CSC is now equipped to do more than “duck and cover.”

On Wednesday 14 August, 17 Year 10 students and three staff members travelled to Darwin

to participate in Charles Darwin University’s open day and experience University life. We

stayed in the student accommodation at the university and participated in an engineering

class on campus, got to experience what it is like to sit in a lecture theatre and met with

author Barry Johnsberg is the CDU library. At the Open Day we were able to participate in

tours, hands on activities like the virtual reality glasses and had the chance to speak with

both lecturers and students about what courses were on offer and where each of them

could take us in the future.

As well as attending CDU we had the opportunity to visit Berrimah research farm, the

Darwin Aquaculture Centre and the Department of Fisheries to understand what the life of

a scientist might look like. At the Department of Fisheries we were able to observe one of

the scientists conducting research on sharks and observe her performing a shark dissection.

We were lucky enough to be invited to Government house to meet with the Administrator

of the Northern Territory Her Honour the Honourable Vicki O'Halloran AO. She shared

morning tea with us, gave us a tour of the house and introduced us to her very friendly dog

Lulu. At Parliament House we were lucky enough to be allowed to enter the chamber and

listen to how parliament is run and the important job of each person within the chamber.

We also got to learn about the bombing of Darwin. There as are some significant points of

history within parliament house itself .We also visited the World War II Oils tunnels

underneath the city.

We participated team building activities with our group and were able to and reflect on

ways to build on our skills and think about our future career goals. Our week was very busy

but we still had the chance to enjoy some fun activities such as fish feeding, hip hop dancing

and a spectacular sunset harbor cruise and more. Thank you to everyone who made the trip

possible.

Alice Outcomes – a step in the right direction

Last semester we introduced Bush Days. Here the students engage in activities at different locations around

Alice Springs. These days enable the students to interact positively with each other, enjoy cooking kangaroo

tails or BBQ and developing strong relationships with the teaching staff. This term we have visited Simpsons

Gap where we were able to have a talk about being a Park Ranger with Ranger Dale. He talked about the

importance of education and what his role was as a Ranger. We also visited Honeymoon and Emily Gap where

they had the opportunity to build a fire and cook and eat kangaroo tails, and of course the Telegraph Station.

We were also able to visit a few workplaces to find out

about working in these environments. These have included

CKS Electrical, Headspace and Office National to name a

few. This is a great opportunity for the students to gain an

understanding of what jobs are on offer in the community

This semester we have introduced a cooking programme

with Ronnie. He joins us every Wednesday to teach the

students how to work safely in a kitchen and how to cook

healthy meals. All the students enjoy the delicious food they

prepare. An added bonus has been the work that Ash from

the Positive Learning Centre has done with the fellas on

developing their own stories into music. The fellas have

worked individually and in a group to write and record their

own songs.

In the mix of all this has been visits to the Men’s Shed, CSC

for PE lessons, Clontarf, working on Cert 1 in Agrifoods,

furniture building and of course working to complete the

NTCET with the assistance of the NTSDE.

We have recently farewelled 2 staff members – Richard Waring and Byron Souter. We wish them well in their

next adventure and thank them for their care and compassion for all the students. We have welcomed

Michael Tilmouth -Turner, Sharna Richards and Sushannah Bostock- Stuart to our team. We look forward to an

exciting end to the year. Lyndsay Thomas - Team Leader
