WESTFIELD NEWS

Next week is

Week 2

on the timetable.

Parents Evening

Dates

4:00pm – 7:00pm

Thursday 15th March – Yr 10

Thursday 22nd March –Yr 7

Wednesday 28th March –Yr 8

This week in English the Year 11

students have been busy creating

revision products. We borrowed a

revision task from the History

department, where the challenge

was to summarise the plot

of Jekyll and Hyde, broken

down chapter by chapter, using a

series of images and as few

words as possible. A huge well

done to the winner, Erin Turner,

who created a stunning

masterpiece. Well done to Raafay

Sultan who was a

strong contender and who stole

second place. Keep it up Year 11!

Despite the valiant efforts of the premises staff, teaching staff and students, Westfield unfortunately had to close for a day

because of the extreme weather conditions. Staff battled against the elements to try and keep the pathways clear and the

site safe but the ’Beast from the East’ was just too much for us!

The students were a credit to themselves and us by first of all making it in to school and then leaving in a sensible manner

at the end of school.

Hopefully, that is the worst of the winter done and we can start looking forward to the summer sun.

This week the Beauty

department took our

sixth form girls to

Professional beauty

London. We had a great

day looking at all the new

trends for 2018 and the

fashionable colours and

techniques for this

summer. We had a look

at the All Body Pro

Beauty Competition

entries for this year,

spoke with our exam

board and our girls

purchased products and

equipment to add to

their kits.

On Tuesday 27th February, Westfield were lucky enough

to host our first ever Teen Brain Course for parents.

The session was ran by Jan Crook, a major part of her

role is to support schools in their local community to

help to improve students wellbeing and attainment at

school. This course has been specially designed to help

both parents and professionals to understand the

teenage brain; as the teenage brain is one of the

biggest mysteries of the world! The course provided

parents with information about brain development and

allows the parents to understand their child's brain in a

little more detail; to combat the old teenage phrase of

"you don't understand me!"

Just a reminder about the fabulous resource MyMaths.

All parents and students at Westfield have access to this and it isn’t just for

Key Stage 3.

As part of our subscription we have access to the newly developed A Level

content and as well as using it during lessons, including stretch and challenge

for our top Year 11s, we also encourage all students to use MyMaths to

support their learning. It’s great for homework or revision and has fun games

and activities as well as lessons and worksheets.

Most students are already aware of this but the log in details are:

A year 10 student took time out to email his teacher “Thank you very much

miss (for the password) - I have been practising on MyMaths and it helps me

out”

Debate club gets a special appearance from Mr Russell!

Last Wednesday, debate club was taken by storm when Mr Russell popped by to help and ended up performing an

on-the-spot debate that left us all lost for words with its brilliance!

Miss Sefton and Mrs Keys are still very happy to have new members come along – all year groups are welcome each

Wednesday 3-4pm in the 6th form area next to the canteen. So far, we have debated whether or not euthanasia should be

allowed under UK law, whether education is about the grades you leave school with or something more important, and

other controversial topics.

We have been extremely impressed by the quality of our debaters and from September onwards, we will be looking for the

school’s brightest talent to form Westfield’s first EVER debate team that will compete against other schools!

Come along and improve your skills!

See you next Wednesday!

Miss Sefton and Mrs Keys

Plenty of positives up for grabs in English!

Your English teachers are keen to help you expand your

vocabulary horizon! We are aiming to stretch each and every

one of you in each and every English lesson with ‘Challenge

words’ – a selection of ambitious and, you guessed it,

challenging words that link to your learning that week.

You will see these words being written up onto the white

board. We are looking for those of you who make note of

these and most importantly, practise using them in your

verbal responses during class! Each time you correctly use a

challenge word, you will receive a positive. Your parents will

be thinking you have swallowed a dictionary in no time!

Fewer Vs. Less

You know the checkout aisle in the supermarket that says

“10 Items or Less”? That’s technically incorrect. It should

be “10 items or Fewer.

Why?

Because “items” are quantifiable- you can count 10 items.

Use “fewer” for things that you can count, like “fewer

M&Ms” or “fewer road trips”.

Use “less” for things that aren’t quantifiable, like “less

reading” and “less travelling.”

Lower School students have been learning about

International Women’s Day. (8th March)

In an interactive Assembly, led by Ms O’Connor, students

in Years 7, 8 and 9 were asked to vote with their planners

to answer True or False to questions such as

women and men always get paid the same amount for

doing the same job – they have ‘equal pay’.

You have to be female to be a feminist.

We found out that not only (surprisingly) is James Bond a

feminist but there are many other high profile male

feminists including Prince Harry.

Finally, as students read quotes from feminists both male and female, they were issued a challenge, following the example of Malala

Yousafzai – you are never too young to make a difference WHAT WILL YOU DO?

There is a PTA meeting this Wednesday at 6.30pm. Please

come along if you are interested in being involved in

raising money for new equipment and facilities for your

children to use whilst they are at Westfield Academy.

Solution to last week’s problem: This week’s problem:

After a loss against Parmiter's earlier in the season Westfield were looking to bounce back and secure back to back winning

titles in Division 1 and the Premier division in 2 seasons, much like the feat of the late Graham Taylor for Watford F.C. The

boys, showed they deserved the right to be in the division and outperformed and outclassed some other schools. Before

the game Mr. Murphy showed the boys a video sent to him from the GB under 18 coach, Alan Keane, wishing them all luck

in the championship game. The final game was against Watford Boys Grammar, with the winner wearing the crown. In the

game we showed true heart with some high and low points which meant we were up 11 points at half time. The game grew

ever closer in the 4th quarter with the final result being 44-43 to Westfield Academy and their first Premier division trophy

in some years. Mr Murphy would like to thank the squad for their hard work in the season and the support shown in the

final game from the football academy coaches and Mr Meale.

The time to sign up for the chess tournament has now ended.

With over 40 competitors, it is sure to be very exciting!

All entrants will be placed in a knockout bracket.

If you signed up, make sure to come along on Tuesday lunchtime to find out

who you are playing!

If you missed your chance to sign up, let Mr Russell know, and you might be

able to take the spot of a no-show player.

The grand prize will be:

Small trophy to keep

Engraved shield (to be kept until next year)

£50 intu voucher
