March 2012

Kalinda Primary School’s Vision Statement A learning community with shared values, fostering a life-long love

of learning through meaningful experiences, to embrace a constantly changing society.

From the Assistant Principal……..

Illustrations of Professional Standards

for Teachers Towards the end of last year, Kalinda Primary School was involved with the Australian Institute for Teaching and School Leadership (AITSL) in developing video examples of best teaching practice for their new website. AITSL was formed to provide national leadership in promoting excellence in the profession of teaching and school leadership with funding provided by the Australian Government. This new website will provide important Professional Development material for all schools across Australia. Kalinda Primary School was the first school approached in Australia to have teachers filmed to provide examples of what best teaching practice looks like according to the new national standards. I would like to say a huge thank you to the teachers that volunteered to be a part of this pioneering project. It is always a huge thing to invite cameras into your classroom, let alone have educational experts from all over Australia pick apart every aspect of your lesson once it has been filmed! The feedback from these experts on the lessons we filmed at our school was extremely positive. They were more than impressed with the quality of teaching and curriculum that they witnessed in our videos and, as a result, clips from the footage taken at our school were the very first to be put onto the website. Gail and myself, along with some of our teachers who were involved in the project, were very proud to attend the launch of the website by the Federal Minister for Education, Mr. Peter Garrett, at Etihad Stadium last week.

Launch of the new MFB 'KidZone' WebSite Kalinda was thrilled to be chosen by the Metropolitan Fire Brigade to help launch their new website for kids, www.mfbkidzone.com.au. LEADERSHIP ROLES

A number of new leadership roles for Level 4 students have been created at Kalinda this year. These were made available to the Level 4 students to apply for. Two of those new roles are for Equipment Managers and Personal Best Ambassadors as described below.

EQUIPMENT MANAGERS The role of Equipment Manager should be viewed as one of privilege, pride and responsibility. It is more than just a title and requires dedication and commitment to the role for an entire year. Each manager is different and contributes an assortment of personality traits, skills and ideas to the job. On the whole, there are specific tasks required for Equipment Managers, broadly:

1. To install and remove the basketball post pads daily. This will involve an investment of approximately 5

minutes before school and 5 minutes at the end of lunchtime five days per week.

2. Assist the Phys Ed. teacher with the maintenance of sports store room and equipment.

3. Assist teachers with sport equipment for Interschool, Inter-house or classroom competitions.

4. Equipment managers will be expected to set up the Assembly hall with chairs as well as the public

announcement system prior to each Monday morning assembly. This will require them to be at school at

least 15 minutes prior to the bell.

5. Equipment Managers must have the academic dedication to catch-up any work missed as a result of

their additional responsibilities.

6. This list is not exhaustive and other duties will be added as the need arises.

‘PERSONAL BEST’ AMBASSADORS The role of „Personal Best‟ Ambassador is largely one of research and „selfless‟ public presentation (i.e.: at assemblies). Kalinda students are continually achieving amazing results in both school-based as well as extra-curricular activities (sport, art, performing arts, community service, etc...) for which recognition is truly deserved. Personal Best Ambassadors will be charged with the responsibility of introducing to the school community pupils who have achieved outstanding results across a broad range of pursuits. They would also need to be able to speak „to‟ the corresponding journey (i.e.: sacrifices, highs, lows, where next?) and be able to ask interesting questions to the student/s being honoured. On the whole, there are specific tasks required of Personal Best Ambassadors, broadly:

1. Establishing and managing a recognition „nomination‟ process/es,

2. To deliver simple, clear, respectful speeches as a regular inclusion to Monday assemblies with

audiences including students, teachers, parents, grandparents, etc...

3. The encouragement of good behaviour and hard work in others through positive encouragement and

continual recognition of personal best efforts,

4. To be pro-active in playground issues (be a leader not a follower – setting the right example at all times),

This list is not exhaustive and other duties will be added as the need arises. Congratulations to the following successful applicants:

Equipment Managers: Nathan D. (56O), Astrid H. (56B), Luke Y.(56A) and Taya F. (56B).

Personal Best Ambassadors: Jamie M. (56A) and Angus D.(56M).

Term 1 is a Sunsmart Term

Have you got your hat? All students must be wearing a hat when outdoors before and after school, at recess, lunchtimes and during sports classes. If they are not wearing a school-approved Sunsmart hat students will not be able to participate in outdoor activities and will be asked to sit in the shade under a designated area.

LOTE NEWS The Kalinda community has received an invitation to a “Thank You from Japan Exhibition”. The Consulate General of Japan in Melbourne is again sending their sincere appreciation for our tsunami appeal fund raising at our Open Night last year as the first anniversary of the Great East Japan Earthquake is approaching. The exhibition is made up of 80 pictures drawn by children in the disaster affected areas on the theme “myself in 10 years time”, and photographs of aid from overseas in action after the disaster. If you have a chance, please go and have a look! It is on Saturday 10

thand Sunday 11

th March at the

Melbourne International Fine Art Centre, Level 1 278 Collins St Melbourne Our Level 4 children are working on the same theme and will send their work to our sister school: Higashi Primary School in Kofu, Japan. HIROMI HAGIHARA LOTE TEACHER

ENVIRONMENTAL SCIENCE On behalf of the enthusiastic gardeners and environmental scientists at Kalinda, I would like to extend a huge thank you to all of the wonderful volunteers at the Working Bee last Sunday. The transformation was amazing, as the photos below evidence. Your assistance is, as always, greatly appreciated.

WORKING BEE – Sunday4thMarch Our working bee on Sunday was well attended with the Butler, Ciccotelli, Lundberg, Ma, Nainggolan, Patel, Schubert, Whitcroft, Woodley, Yeomanson, and Chheang families present, along with mini-helpers Nathan, Abbey, Hayley, Emma, Ezra, Madeline, Jode, Lauren, Jake, Chevene, Luke, Callum and Peliza. The jobs that were done included weeding, mulching, laying stones, rubbish pick up and the playgrounds were raked. Thank you to the families who have returned their working bee notices with a preferred date of attendance. We still need many more families to help keep the school in tip-top shape. It‟s a great way for parents to meet each other and the kids love to play at school on a weekend (and help out a little too!!) For our newest families, you‟ll soon get to know Ted & Bryan as they are constantly here fixing things, moving things, organising all the working bees and generally lending a hand wherever it‟s needed. They‟ll even cook a snag for you after your hard work at the working bees! The next working bee is on Saturday 24

th March. If you have been rostered on – we‟ll see you there!
