National Sorry Day 26 May National Sorry Day recognises the injustices of the policies and practices of the past towards our Indigenous brothers and sisters. Reconciliation in word and action should be a hallmark of our faith, in all aspects of our lives. It is important that as a school we ensure that our students learn both an accurate history of our country, and that as Christians we believe deeply in reconciling the wrongs of the past in order to live towards a better future.

Reconciliation is a tangible example of Christ's love for all, and we should make that known to our children. Sorry Day is not about feeling bad, it is about healing wounds in order to live a better future. Saying sorry and meaning it is something to be proud of.

Confirmation

This Friday many of our students will fulfil the sacrament of Confirmation into the Catholic Church. For these children

and their families this is a significant step in their faith journeys and I like to congratulate them all and wish them well

for the evening. Thank you to the school and Parish staff, and parents, who have worked with these students to prepare

them for the Sacrament. Bishop Ken Howell will be visiting our Parish and school from Friday and we welcome him here

to STM and Noosa.

Funds Raised by Fete

Well the surveys are in and overwhelmingly the preferred activities for the use of funds raised by the Fete are to cover

our playgrounds. The second priority was looking to add some nature based play areas on the oval. I will begin getting

some quotes in for the shade sails and we can progress from there. Thank you for your feedback regarding this.

Parent’s Marist Information

This Friday morning Ann Maree will be meeting with parents for a Marist morning. It will begin at 9:30 am. Please look

to her newsletter for more information regarding this.

School Board

St Thomas More, like other schools, has a Pastoral School Board. Seats on this Board are held by parents, staff, Parish

and school leadership. The school Board has a very different role to that of P&Fs in that they are largely focused on

structural and administrative topics from within the school. The Board serves as a point of contact for the school when

discerning policy reviews for example. It is important to point out that the Board is Pastoral and Advisory, which makes

it different to a Board who may have the power to hire and fire! The Board’s role is to enter dialogue with the school

leadership in regards to certain processes and make suggestions and provide support where required. This means

having Board members with a range of skills is useful. The reason I bring this all to your attention is that we will require

some recruitment of parents to the school Board in 2019 and so below I outline the process for anyone interested in

this:

1. Firstly, write an expression of interest to the Principal and Chair of the Board outlining the skills you believe would

be beneficial to the Board, your availability to attend evening meetings (once a

month approx.. 5:45-7:30), your faith commitment and/or involvement in the

parish.

2. From there, there will be invitees to "sit in" on a board meeting later in the year.

3. Finally, Fr Jason, Chair & Principal make final selection- a welcome letter to the

new member and a thank you from those who enquired will be created.

4. Expressions of interest close this Friday.

Have a great week. God Bless. Glen Bucklar Principal

Assistant Principal Religious Education

Dear St Thomas More Families, The celebration of the Feast of Pentecost on Sunday marked the end of the Easter Season. Pentecost is a wonderful feast within our Church – it is a moment of ‘hope and possibility’, as the closest friends of Jesus were blessed by the Holy Spirit to continue Jesus’ mission and ministry. It is a moment when, although Jesus was no longer with his disciples, he was ‘truly present’ among them as they became aware of what they were being called to do. Each one of them received the fire of God’s Spirit within their heart – a fire to stir within them a future of hope with a belief in the power of God’s love for the world. There are many ‘Pentecost’ moments in our lives – the times we may be challenged or unsure but know deep within ourselves that we are being called to go out, to do what we do and to help bring Marcellin’s dream of ‘loving them all and loving them all equally’ to life within our community. This Friday Bishop Ken Howell will be visiting St Thomas More as part of his pastoral visit to the Parish. Bishop Ken will be at school from 12.30 – 2pm during which time he will do a tour of the school, visit some classrooms and have afternoon tea with staff. Bishop Ken will celebrate the Sacrament of Confirmation with a number of our students this Friday evening – we wish them well for this important celebration. Bishop Ken will stay until the end of the weekend for our combined schools Parish Family Mass on Sunday evening. It would be wonderful to have as many families as possible present at this mass – all are welcome. This Friday morning we will be hosting a Marist Parent retreat ‘Rest a While with God’. It is an opportunity to take a rest from the noise and movement of our everyday lives – it is a time for some meditation and contemplation in the Marist Way. Hope to see you there. Bishop Ken will celebrate the mass at our ‘Combined Parish Family Mass with St Teresa’s’ this Sunday night at 5.30pm at the St Thomas More Church. We would families to come along to be part of this special celebration. You are welcome to stay for a Sausage Sizzle after Mass.

Date Claimer – this Friday 25th May - Marist Parent retreat ‘Rest a While with God’. You are welcome to join other parents ‘to take a rest from the noise and movement of our everyday lives – and have time for some meditation and contemplation in the Marist Way’. Morning tea will be provided from 9.15am for a 9.30 start and continue until 11am. Please RSVP to Ann-Maree Pitot Thank Yous

Under 8’s Week UNDER 8's WEEK at STM

Children Exploring Language and Culture This week we are celebrating Under 8's Week at St Thomas More with a strong focus on celebrating the gift learning in the Early Years. Under 8's week is also a wonderful time to acknowledge and thank the many talented and caring individuals who work with young children at our school. A big 'thanks' to all staff and parents for their creativity, patience and hard work in supporting young children in their learning Journey. I encourage you to take some time this week to say 'Thank you' to those who support your child at school each day. May they continue to be blessed in all they do. Today we started this week with a joyfilled liturgy for our children. The students will enjoy the National Simultaneous storytime on Wednesday and look forward to having great reading time with their buddies this week. On Friday at Assembly we will include the beautiful Rainbow song that the children sing so well. Later in the term on Wednesday 27th June a STM Under 8's Activity Morning will be held in the morning session. More details coming soon. Looking forward to a great week at STM. Ann-Maree

MUSIC TIME WITH THE PREPS

From the Pastoral Worker Hi to all our wonderful St Thomas More families, A big thank you to the mums and dads out there that have been supporting Brionne in the Marist Cafe and helping with meal preparation for families that are going through their own personal struggles at this time. It gladdens my heart to know there are so many caring people prepared to "help and support others" in our St Thomas More school community. Remember that one person, one family can all make a difference in someone's life. Which leads me to our local community networks. There are many different community service network supports available at our fingertips for all different needs in our local community. This week I wanted to reinforce the support of the Domestic and family violence services available to us all. Remember to always TRUST YOUR INSTINCT and if you harbor a concern for a friend or a loved one, there are always supports available to our community. Below is a government website with some information on domestic violence. https://www.qld.gov.au/community/getting/reportingabuse/index.html Domestic and family violence takes many forms and can sometimes have fatal consequences. If you are concerned someone you know is being abused, don't let your concern become regret. Trust your instinct - call DV Connect on 1800 811 811. lease feel free to contact me below for any information on other community services that are important for us all to be aware of. God Bless you all for all you do, Marie Pastoral Care Worker - Email: [email protected]

READER'S CUP

Next Wednesday (23rd) marks the annual inter-school Reader’s Cup competition. As in previous years, we hold an open intra-school competition for Year 6 in term 1. The 5 highest scorers are then chosen to make up the STM team, consisting of 4 participants and 1 reserve. Over the holidays and during this term, those 5 have read the same 5 titles as 130 other Sunshine Coast students, culminating in the heats on Wed. morning, where all teams are asked the same questions and allotted points. The 4 highest scoring teams from the heats then make up the finals, to determine which school will represent the Sunshine Coast region in the state finals. This year, we have 5 highly dedicated and committed students to represent our school on Wed. They are, (L to R): Jazmyn Donovan, Maya Cameron, Amy Miller, Jonathan Gibbs, Peyton Vernon

ARTIST OF THE WEEK This week I couldn’t go past selecting Dempsey Finn of Room 16 as my artist of the week for his beautiful oil pastel of Jeffrey’s Splendid Fairy wren ‘Pepe’. Dempsey’s attention to the detail of colour and his creation of texture is very precise.
