Joe Mirra – Just terrificBy: Tina Fabiani

A passion for giving back, an unwav-ering dedication and a drive to help others succeed are just a few of the ways in which Joseph Mirra can be described. Known by many as a

“quintessential volunteer,” he has a passion for the community that is evident in everything he does.

As a true leader and integral part of MidState Medical Center, Joe has served on numerous hospital boards and committees including the Board of Governors, Community Advisory Council, Board of Directors, and Chair of the Development Commit-tee. In this role, he has lead efforts to increase local philanthropy to support hospital programs and services. In 2016 Joe was awarded with the final presentation of MidState Medical Center’s Crystal Obelisk Award. The award was established by MidState in 1991 to recognize individuals, groups or organizations for distinguished contributions to the advancement of the healthcare delivery system in the community. Through his selfless commitment and a genuine desire to improve the health of the communi-ty, Joe was a deserving recipient of this prestigious award.

But Joe’s commitment to community extends far beyond the walls of MidState. Joe’s commitment to service and path to leadership began in the mid-1960s when he enlisted in the Air Force during the Vietnam era where he serviced stints in Guam, Okinawa and Thailand, his key responsibility to debrief B-52 flight

crews after their missions. Numerous organizations have benefited from his passion, insight and experience. For many years, Joe has worked with the Wallingford Economic Development Commission where he current-ly serves as Chairman. He also serves on the Town Center Collaborative group and is the co-founder and Chairman of the board of HUBCAP Wallingford, where he passionately devotes time developing collaborative op-por-tunities between schools, businesses, entrepreneurs and the community.

Before recently retiring, Joe was the president of Business Resource Center, LLC located in Yalesville. Prior to estab-lish-ing this business, Joe enjoyed a successful career as an executive with AVCO Financial Service, Manufactures Hanover Bank Subsidiary, and a healthcare revenue recovery unit within the Ansonia Credit Bureau Corp. With over 40 years’ experience in revenue en-hancement services throughout the Northeast and affiliations with the Trade Associations and Chambers of Commerce, Joe has served as a lobbyist addressing healthcare and business issues in both Hartford and Washington, DC.

Laurence Weiss, MD “is doing it right”

Laurence Weiss, MD

By: Cheryl Belomizi

In 1983, Dr. Laurence (Larry) Weiss, now a semi-retired partner and former president of Radiology Associates at MidState Medical Center, was looking for a community hospital to start his life-long career. From the North Shore of Long Island, this Queens native saw an ad in the paper for a radiologist at Meriden/Wallingford Hospital. After traveling nearly 100 miles for an interview, he was hesitant about his decision. As he walk- ed to the third floor of this large building to his appoint-ment, he saw a wheel barrow filled with shovels and other similar items. He had second thoughts about working there, but immediately realized that the kindness of the people he came in contact with during that short time outweighed any first impressions regarding the appearance of a small section of the hospital during a construction project.

That culture and friendly en- vironment continued through-out his, now 36-year career at MidState Medical Center –

“The staff went above and beyond all the time,” Larry said with pride. He feels very fortunate to have had the op- portunity to work alongside so many great people in the

radiology department and offices. In fact, socializing with everyone is one of the high-lights of his day. He misses the breaks at the coffee shop in the old Meriden/Wallingford Hospital and reminiscences about their delicious BLTs and milkshakes.

Larry does what he can to keep in shape, but warns against jogging on the entrance ramps to the highways. He admits to making that mistake when jogging on his lunch break. While attempting his usual run down Lewis Avenue and up the entrance ramp to I-691, he recalls getting “pulled over” when a policeman stopped his car directly in front of him to ask forcefully “What are you doing on the entrance ramp to the highway?” Scared and embarrassed, Larry explained his daily routine to the officer. Luckily, his kind and gentle demeanor afforded him a reprieve from spending the rest of his work day at the Meriden Police Department.

In addition to his “fun” activi-ties and busy career, Larry served as an officer in the Meriden Wallingford Medical Society for four years and played a key role for 10 years on the hospital’s committee to identify gaps in specialties and recruit physicians that are still in practice today. As president,

he planned and organized a dinner dance at the Ramada Inn in Meriden, an accom- plishment he was proud to say brought 100 people in attendance.

When Larry is not working or attending a work event, he is spending time with his wife, Lori, of 35 years, and daugh-ters, Lindsay and Jamie. They all enjoy leisure activities such as tennis, traveling and watch- ing professional football. Un- fortunately, they root for the Jets which has caused them considerable suffering over the years, he explains. Larry, Lindsay and Jamie participate as a team in the radiology department pro football pick- em contest. They are proud of the fact that they have finish- ed in the top three spots sever- al times over the past years.

Most recently, Dr. Weiss was awarded Fellowship in the American College of Radiology (ACR). This Fellowship is one of the most prestigious formal recognitions available to long-time ACR members. It symbolizes exceptional achievement in the fields of diagnostic radiology, interven-tional radiology, nuclear medicine, radiation oncology, and/or medical physics. Only 10 percent of College members have been awarded this honor.

Besides Larry’s ongoing sup- port of the hospital, he has included MidState Medical Center in his will and chooses to leave a planned gift to continue his support well into the future. He is the newest member of MidState’s bequest society – Infinity Circle – recognizing individuals who have notified the Department of Philanthropy of their inten- tion to include MidState Medi- cal Center in their wills or estate plans. Larry is very passionate about his work and is extremely proud to support MidState Medical Center for the patients, families, and community he cares so deeply about.

Lastly, Larry wanted to share a quote that he chooses to live by, something his father used to say, and what he thinks about when he is not giving his best effort: “If you are going to do a job, do it right.”

Members of Girls Incorporated of Meriden donated baby bags to benefit new mothers and their newborn babies at MidState Medical Center. With the help of a health department grant, the five girls led the coordination and collection of comfort and care items for their “Healthy Start” fundraiser and were able to collect enough baby items to fill 30 bags with pajamas, bibs, blankets, onesies, board books and other necessities. In addition, each bag contained a handmade card wish-ing the moms a healthy start with their new babies.

11-year-old twin sisters making a significant difference to families in needWith the guidance and encouragement from their Girl Scout troop leader, Cat Quinn, and mother, Rose, Valerie and Jennifer Peluso collected donations of more than 550 baby items to fill 50 gift bags to give to families in need at the Family Birthing Center at MidState Medical Center. The girls collected from their school, Our Lady of Mt. Carmel, Stop & Shop (Centennial Plaza) in Meriden, Walmart in Wallingford, and they also received donations from BJ’s, Stop & Shop and Independent Baptist Bible Church in Middletown.

At just 11 years old, these twins decided they wanted to help give back to their community in a big way. They chose the Family Birthing Center as part of a project to receive their Bronze Award for Girl Scouts, the highest award a Girl Scout Junior can achieve. First they needed to present the project details and timeline to the group for approval and then coordinate the entire process. In just a few weeks, their proceeds were estimated to be well over $1,000. The Family Birthing Center staff were thrilled to receive these generous gifts to help give young families a head start.

Infinity Circle The Infinity Circle recognizes individuals and families who have included MidState Medical Center in their estate plans. We are grateful to our Infinity Circle members for their vision, generosity and investing in the future of MidState Medical Center and supporting the health of the community and generations to come.

MidState receives donation from The Sisters’ ProjectThe Sisters’ Project made a donation of $5,600 to MidState Medical Center to assist cancer patients. The donation will be used to purchase gift cards and books for oncology patients in need.

“We are delighted to donate to the cancer center and look forward to a continued partnership with MidState, a valued hospital in our community, as we go forth in fundraising in the name of hope and cure,” said Judi Gallagher, president of the Sisters’ Project, which raises funds in support of cancer patients and their families within the Wallingford community.

MidState receives 40 men’s chemotherapy bags from a thoughtful 15-year-oldJustice Amechi wanted to do something for Men’s Health. He noticed that a good friend of his mom received a bag and basket of items while going through chemotherapy treatments and he wondered why the men didn’t receive the same. For this reason, he applied for a grant from the City of Meriden and received a $500 grant. From there, he enlisted help from his youth program group, From Boys To Men, an enrichment program in Meriden created in 2005 as a way to assist African-American and Latino young men with their educational process and to achieve a higher sense of importance in their overall grades.

The grant afforded Justice the ability to purchase 40 chemotherapy bags and 20 items to fill each bag. Items included: a journal, pen, puzzle book, stress ball, Kleenex, hand sanitizer, lotion, chapstick, toothpaste, tooth-brush, mouthwash, water, gloves, socks, candy and several snacks.

On December 3, 2018, Justice presented the bags, with pride, to Hartford HealthCare Cancer Institute at MidState Medical Center. On December 6, Justice then gave a presentation regarding this project to Meriden Department of Health and Human Services.

Platt & Maloney pink fundraisingThe Panthers and Spartans boys’ and girls’ soccer teams and the girls’ volleyball team & booster club from Platt and Maloney High Schools teamed up for their annual Pink Games. The families, fans, faculty and staff donated $550 from a bake sale and outright donations to benefit the Hartford HealthCare Cancer Institute at MidState Medical Center in honor of cancer survivors.

We are grateful to the soccer and volleyball families, friends, faculty and staff for their generous donations.

Central Region receives grant from After the StormThe Hartford HealthCare Central Region recently received an $11,000 grant from After the Storm to support integrative therapy programs at MidState Medical Center and The Hospital of Central Connecticut. This gift will help provide cancer survi-vors with integrative therapy services, such as gentle yoga, one-to-one integrative therapy sessions and art therapy. These services support the body’s natural ability to heal by reducing stress, strengthening the immune system and promoting a state of relaxation and positive well-being. Integrative therapies are an integral part of coping with a breast cancer diagnosis.

After the Storm’s mission is to help cancer survivors physically, emotionally, and spiritually heal from the aftermath of their diagnosis and treatments, and help restore balance to their lives.

Central Region receives donated CuddleCotsAnnabella’s Angels donated “CuddleCots” to the Family Birthing Center at MidState Medical Center and the Family BirthPlace at The Hospital of Central Connecticut (HOCC) to benefit families facing the tragic loss of their babies, due to stillbirth or later-term miscarriage. A CuddleCot is a cooling device that preserves a baby’s body in a bassi-net or crib so that the baby can remain in the hospital room up to five days, giving families the precious gift of time to grieve over their loss. The CuddleCots were dedicated to Kim Chapman-McIntosh and in honor of her son Thomas James.

Annabella’s Angels is a non-profit organization that provides support, awareness, and education for Pregnancy and Infant Loss Network (PAIL) families and medical professionals. Through various fundraisers, Annabella’s Angels was able to donate CuddleCots to MidState and HOCC, and eight other area hospitals, including Hartford Hospital. The CuddleCots Annabella’s Angels placed were the only CuddleCots in Connecticut. Each CuddleCot costs close to $3,000.
