What would Futureversity do without its enthusiastic volunteers? These 16-25 year

olds help us with invaluable feedback, promotion, planning and delivery ... but most

importantly, they keep us in touch with what young people want!

Our FAB: Futureversity Advisory Board has been planning the summer programme

since the end of the last year. It’s thanks to the passionate FAB team that you have so

many brilliant summer courses to choose from!

And if you participate in one of our free summer courses, you’ll see for

yourself how amazing our Peer Motivators are. They’ll welcome you, show you where to

go and do everything they can to make sure you have a positive experience!

Packed with fantastic activities, this residential

exchange for young people from Cornwall and

London will teach you about the importance of

the sea in the world economy.

You’ll spend the first week in Cornwall working

with Lizard Outreach Trust, doing water sports,

enjoying a barbecue and visiting sites including

the Marconi Centre, Tate St. Ives, Minack Theatre,

Royal Naval Air Station Culdrose and the Lizard

Lighthouse — the most southerly point in Britain

(where you’ll be staying!).

In the second week you’ll stay in London and

go on a tour of the city’s top maritime firms and

attractions, including The Baltic Exchange, Lloyds

of London, Tate & Lyle, the Thames Barrier, the

National Maritime Museum and London Aquarium.

You must be willing to take part in all adventure

sports activities and be able to swim. More

details about the course will be available nearer

the time and you’ll be expected to attend a

briefing and selection session.

Working with Ty Newydd, The National Writers

Centre for Wales, and the internationally acclaimed

Sable LitMag, this is an exciting residential course

which aims to challenge, inspire and transform

your writing! The week-long course will be held

at Ty Newydd, the last home of the Prime Minister

Lloyd George (1916–22), which is a 16th century

house set in wooded surroundings, with beautiful

secluded gardens and stunning views over

Cardigan Bay!

All creative writers will get loads out of this course.

Fiction writers will be encouraged to think about

characters and plot — and whether there are

enough real stories for young people out there —

and budding poets will learn about imagery and

how to make their words come alive. Working

with professional writers, you’ll generate lots of

new material to kickstart your writing career.

The course is open to young people at any stage

of their writing lives. More information will be

made available regarding times and content

nearer to the time and you’ll be expected to

attend a briefing and selection session.

FAB: Futureversity Advisory Board, 16-25 years

Futureversity knows that the real experts in what young people want are young

people themselves. Our FAB: Futureversity Advisory Board, made up of 16-25 year-old

volunteers, gives advice and feedback on pretty much everything Futureversity,

from our marketing materials to which summer courses we run. They promote

Futureversity to other young people, inspire us with ideas and hold us to account

on behalf of all the young people we work with. They even sit on interview panels

when we’re recruiting new staff!

The scheme is a great addition to your CV, providing fantastic experience and

development and the opportunity to gain an NOCN Level 2 accreditation!

Youth Assessors

Paid summer work for young people aged 16-19!

Youth Assessors are Futureversity’s eyes and ears across London. Every summer they

visit Futureversity programmes across the capital to make sure that young people

everywhere are getting a high-quality service. They observe courses, interview

participants, speak to managers and report back what they find. Along the way,

they develop new skills, grow in confidence, get work experience and make lasting

friendships. And they get paid!

how do i apply?

The first step to becoming a paid Youth Assessor is to complete our accredited

Communication Skills course. It’s fun and free and will give you essential skills and

an NOCN Level 2 accreditation. You can then apply for the Youth Assessor Training

Programme. We’re running more Communication Skills courses in the Autumn, so

keep your eye on our website at www.futureversity.org/youthassessors to find out

when you can apply.

AnD BEYonD!

Futureversity is going places

We started off as a small Tower Hamlets charity in 1995, but our model was so

successful that in 2006 we were commissioned by the government to roll it out

across London. Two years later our network was running free summer courses for

young people in every single London borough!

This massive expansion brought with it a need to develop a strong brand that

could hold its own and reflect our dynamic and innovative work.

We completed the rebrand in 2010, which was celebrated in a launch attended

by patron and former student Dizzee Rascal, and we’re now in the process of

talking with other boroughs across the capital to get them on board.

Meanwhile, we’ve been approached to work in cities as far reaching as

Manchester and Glasgow, and even had enquiries from Egypt and Nigeria!

And there are other exciting developments too. The Job Ready Programme is

now running in West London and we’re piloting a brand new 4-week

environmental volunteer programme called Eco Challenge Xtra. This is part of

National Citizen Service, a Big Society initiative supporting young people to take

on new challenges and make a difference in their local communities.

In fact, there are always exciting opportunities for young people at

Futureversity, so don’t forget to stay updated at www.futureversity.org to find

out what’s going on.

After all, this is the place where things can happen.

71

our vision: A world where all young people are valued

and fulfil their potential.

All donations welcome!

Futureversity believes that all young people deserve the chance to be the best they can

be, regardless of who they are or where they come from.

This is why we insist that our courses are free.

Although we don’t charge young people, it costs up to £250 to fund a student on a

Summer Programme course and up to £3,000 for a student to complete our Job Ready

Programme. Demand for Futureversity’s key programmes is five times higher than the

charity can currently meet.

This is why we need your help!

You can make a donation towards Futureversity through

www.justgiving.com/futureversity or send a cheque made payable to Futureversity to

the following address:

Futureversity, ground Floor, 24-26 Fournier street, london E1 6QE

You can even donate by text!

Make a difference without breaking the bank! You can now donate £1, £2, £5

or £10 to Futureversity by text. Just text FVST02 and the amount you want to give

(eg FVST02 £10) to 70070. All texts are free and Futureversity will receive 100%

of your donation!

Fundraising

how organisations and private donors can help

If you or your organisation want to be part of our ambitious future, we would love your

support. You can do this in various ways – through a donation, payroll giving or selecting

us as your Charity of the Year. Although we obviously welcome financial support, you

can help us in other ways too. You could offer us meeting rooms or venues to run our

activities and events or why not run a course for us, like our partners Barclays Capital

and National Express, or provide mentors for our staff and young people?

We welcome all new ideas and would love to talk to you.

For more information, email our fundraising team at
