Highlights of April Meeting

Mark Steele, President, welcomed mem-bers and guests on November 4. Frank Holman led the Pledge of Allegiance.

Mark announced that donations to the scholarship fund have reached $3680. He also reminds us that the time to apply for scholarships begins now.

Ron Alto introduced our featured speaker, Susan Farretta, Director of Education Ini-tiatives for the Arizona Tech Council. Tammy Wolfe, Honeywell Sr. Manager Communications/Community Relations al-so attended the meeting.

Susan briefed the members in attendance about the Chief Science Officers program. This is an Arizona developed program with active efforts to make science education more relevant and thus improve the world through science.

Focused on STEAM (Science, Technology, Engineering, Arts and Mathematics). This program in its 2

nd year has 220 students

throughout Arizona, elected by their peers as Chief Science Officers.

Elected Officers attends an institute to learn their role as STEAM Ambassadors at their individual schools. Honeywell is a strong supporter of this initiative.

Several Chief Science officers and a pro-gram mentor were in attendance and gave presentations as to how they approached their roles. We found these young people to be impressive in their communication skills and how their backgrounds and activi-ties came together to support these new roles.

This program is in need of mentors to pro-vide additional support to both the students and the schools to achieve the program goals.

This program has received national atten-tion and is in the process of being expanded to other states.

On October 28, 2016, Governor Ducey wel-comed 200 Chief Science Officers (CSOs) in-to the AZ state capitol for the 1st Annual Arizona CSO Capitol Summit. The CSOs spent the day talking with different leaders and learning how to turn an idea into a bill. They ended their day by pitching to the Gov-ernor.

SciTech Jedi or community mentors are in-dustry and community professionals who team with CSOs to help them navigate the adult bureaucracy and attain their voice in the community. Leveraging some of Arizona SciTech 800+ organizational connections, or-ganizations such as State Farm, Intel, Orbital ATK, Honeywell, TGen, Flinn Foundation, Maricopa Community Colleges, PerfOpt, Pinnacle Transplant, onTop Technology have already enlisted members of their team. Roles of the Jedi will vary from site to site such as making a key introduction with a community member, providing guidance on event strate-gies or attending community meetings as an additional support. In schools Jedi mentors can serve an important role to help validate the importance of the CSO role with students and administrators in serving as a real world connection to the workforce. PRESIDENT’S COLUMN

It was great to see many of you at the November meeting. We had a good turnout and en-

joyed the presentation by Susan Farretta of Ariz SciTech and two students in the program.

I want to again thank all of you that sent in additional donations to the scholarship fund.

So far $3680 has been received and I want to extend a BIG ‘Thank You!’ to all of you who

contributed.

As I mentioned in my last month’s column, now is the time to sign up for the Christmas

luncheon. It will be held on Tuesday, December 6th

at Rustler’s Rooste, 8383 S 48th St,

Phoenix. Tickets are now available, contact Diane Bennett at (480) 994-5243. Last year

we all had a great time and a great meal, don’t miss it! Even if you go past the deadline,

give Diane a call and we can get you in. Our club sponsors a family through Vista del

Camino for Christmas in conjunction with the luncheon.

Our January presentation will be by Rosita Pinedo of Vista del Camino. See the article in

this newsletter for more details. It should be interesting and you won’t want to miss it.

I want to thank all of you for your support of the club in 2016 and I look forward to seeing

many of you in January at the club meeting. May you and yours have a very Merry Christ-

Wednesday Jan 4 ‘17

Our presenter on Wednesday, January 4 will be Rosita Pinedo, Primary Human Resources Di-rector of Vista del Camino. Vista del Camino is a social services organization of the City of Scottsdale that, as one of its roles, identifies needy families that we support with donations at the Holiday Season.

Vista del Camino exists to meet unmet crises related to human services such as emergency rent, mortgage, utility assistance, food and clothing to residents of the City of Scottsdale and homeless individuals and families with a focus on return to self sufficiency through the Job Preparation Program and Career Center.

Vista del Camino serves as the Scottsdale area Community Action Program through a partner-ship with Maricopa County Human Services Department. Vista del Camino has a long history providing recreation services to the surrounding neighborhood, including teen programs and programs for seniors, and programs to serve the local Native American Yaqui Indian Commu-nity. Vista del Camino is the home to non-profit partner Concerned Citizens for Community Health, a local fundraising organization that funds programs offered by the City of Scottsdale.

Through March 1 2016, the East Valley Fix It Guys have participated in 17 Fix Its in-

volving travel of almost 500 miles to help our friends.

Monthly Charity News

Your Board of Directors has voted to donate $100 each month to the Scholarship Fund and the other $100 to local charities as usual. Our previous donations this year have been to Hospice of the Valley, St. Mary’s food Bank and Arizona Science Center. Club guide-lines dictate that we support local charities exclusively. A list of the charities from which the board chooses donations monthly is posted on the website. If you have a favorite charity you would like the club to consider for donations, please bring it to our attention.

The Tovrea Castle tour has proved to be very popular. We purchased 102 tickets for the first two groups and still we had a waiting list so we purchased another 48 tickets for next year. The following tickets are available:

These will be the last tickets the club will buy. All the previous tickets were allocated very quickly; even though it's a few months off please respond quickly if you would like to attend.

The Sanderson Village and Museum

You are invited to tour a private, invitation only, museum. The Sanderson Village and Museum, contains dozens of cars and nostalgic items, such as a beautifully recreated old mercantile store, a kitchen from the ‘40s and a ‘50s diner with oo-dles of chrome and period furnishings and accessories such as Coca Cola items from the ‘30s through the ‘50s. The 20,000 square-foot warehouse has one of the best ford collections anywhere and has something for everyone to enjoy.

This free tour is at 9:30 AM on February 16th, 2017 in Glendale. The tour lasts 60 – 75 minutes.

Spring Picnic at the McCormick-Stillman Railroad Park.

The park is located at the intersection of Scottsdale and

Indian Bend roads, only a few miles north of where we

hold our monthly meetings.

Our monthly meetings are held at the Scottsdale Senior Center, 1700 N. Granite Reef Road, (just north of

McDowell). The meetings are held on the first Wednesday of every month, September thru May, except for

December – our Holiday Luncheon. Our social hour begins at 1:00 pm, club business is conducted at 1:45

pm, the presentation starts at 2:00 pm and adjournment is at 3:00 pm.

1. I changed my car horn to gunshot sounds. People move out of the way much faster now!

4. I didn't make it to the gym today. That makes five years in a row.

5. I decided to change calling the bathroom the John and renamed it the Jim. I feel so much bet-ter saying I went to the Jim this morning.

6. Last year I joined a support group for procrastinators. We haven't met yet...

7. I don't need anger management. I need people to stop irritating me!

8. Old age is coming at a really bad time!

9. When I was a child I thought Nap Time was a punishment...now, as a grown up, it just feels like a small vacation!

10. The biggest lie I tell myself is... "I don't need to write that down, I'll remember it."

11. My people skills are just fine. It's my tolerance of idiots that needs working on.

12. If God wanted me to touch my toes, he would've put them on my knees.

13. The kids text me "plz" which is shorter than please. I text back "no" which is shorter than "yes."

14. I'm going to retire and live off of my savings. Not sure what I'll do the second week.

15. I've lost my mind and I'm pretty sure my wife took it!

16. Even duct tape can't fix stupid... but it can muffle the sound!

17. Why do I have to press one for English when you're just gonna transfer me to someone I can't understand anyway?

18. Of course I talk to myself, sometimes I need expert advice.
