WE NEED YOUR HELP TO ADVERTISE With last year’s decision by Honeywell to preclude the Club from contacting new retirees, we need to figure a way to reach out to prospective members. Word of mouth works, but the effec-tiveness is low.

The new technology is Social Media. It seems to be able to reach out and touch people whether they want it to or not. And, to be honest, none of us know how to do it.

I have opened a Facebook page called Garrett Retirees Club of Arizona and created a company with the same name on Linkedin. If I search ‘Honeywell Aerospace, Phoenix’, in Linkedin, I get over 10,000 names. What do I do next? Not a clue!

It is highly likely that many of our Club Members have relatives or friends that are wizards at this stuff. We are urging you to put them in contact with us to help us market ourselves. I would be willing to give them a title of Volunteer Marketing Manager working either with me or directly with the board. Our contact information is provided in our masthead above or further within the newsletter

Your help and support is greatly appreciated.

Stu Mitnik, Membership Chair

The mission of the Garrett Retirees Club of Arizona is to provide a means

for social, fellowship, and networking activity among retirees, and to be in-

Highlights of the May Meeting

Dolf Strom welcomed members and guests on May 2. Ken Blakely led the Pledge of Al-legiance.

Our featured speaker was Mike Britt, Envi-ronmental Health Specialist with Maricopa County Environmental Services.

What do Health Inspectors do? They inspect and enforce safety codes for:

Food establishments Hotels etc Caterers Schools Mobile food trucks Jails Swimming pools Nursing homes Trailer parks Septic systems Refuse haulers Pet shops Water and wastewater treatment plants

People ask “Why inspect? Why not just react and fix?” Because a lot can happen to a lot of people in a short time if something goes wrong. 1 in 6 people are affected by food borne illness every year in the United States, resulting in 128,000 hospitalizations and 3000 deaths with an estimated annual cost of $15-$20 billion.

The #1 cause of food borne illness – over 60% of all causes – is improper food holding temperature. Poor personal hygiene is the se-cond highest cause. The danger zone for food temperature is between 41

o and

135oF. Below 41

o pathogens cannot grow,

above 135o pathogens are killed. This ap-

plies to the food in your refrigerator at home.

We have all seen or read about the results of kitchen inspections. The #1 violation is the lack of being able to demonstrate food safety knowledge.

There are also specific hazard areas in food preparation and food sales processes includ-ing smoking and curing of meats, use of food additives, and maintaining proper life support for prepared or sold on site shellfish.

The Maricopa County Environmental Ser-vices policy is ACTIVE MANAGEMENT CONTOL with the intention of prevention of food borne illness. During 1 week in Ju-ly of this year, over 200 restaurant and other food service provider inspections were per-formed, most of which were routine inspec-tions.

But some of these were verification inspec-tions indicating that there had been a viola-tion and the visit was to verify that changes had been made.

When is an establishment actually closed? It happens whenever there is an imminent health hazard identified or when the estab-lishment fails to come into compliance.

What are the requirements to become a health inspector? Requirements include 30 hours of natural or physical science, A BS or BA, being a Registered Sanitarian and completing yearly training.

President’s Column – September 2018

I pray everyone has been having a wonderful summer. Time has certainly flown by and our first Garrett Retirees club meeting of the 2018 – 2019 season will soon be here. We will again be meeting at the Scottsdale Senior Center, 1700 N. Granite Reef Road in Scottsdale just north of McDowell, on the first Wednesday of each month. Social hour begins at 1:00PM and the speaker presentation begins at 2:00PM. Our first speaker this year is Paula Sherman who is a docent with the Musical Instrument Museum. I have heard a lot of good things about the museum and I think we all will find her presentation very interesting. Don’t miss it! In October, Tim Mahoney, Pres-ident, Honeywell Aerospace will be giving us a status of the Aerospace business and then in No-vember, Susan Rose from Hospice of the Valley will be giving a presentation. In December we will be having our annual club Christmas luncheon.

The club needs your help, we are always looking for additional volunteers to help lead in many ways. First, if you know someone who recently retired or has been retired and have not joined the club, invite them to a meeting or let me know and I will invite them! Second, if you have any ide-as of how to promote the club and increase our meeting attendance please let me or any board meeting know. Also, if you have thoughts of how we might use social media let us know. Speak-ing of the board, your 2018 - 2019 Board Members are: Mark Steele – President, Dolf Strom – Vice President, Joan Schenamsgruber – Secretary, Glenn Orgeron– Treasurer, Stu Mitnik – News-letter Editor & Membership Chair, Diane Bennett – Events Chair, Frank Holman and Bob Daven-port – Scholarship Board, Hermann Andresen and Don Stewart Board members. Please think about how you want your club to move forward and how you might help. Feel free to contact any board member with any item you may have concerning the club.

The club now has a Facebook page! Go check it out at: https://www.facebook.com/Garrett-

Retirees-Club-of-Arizona-276007896324384/ Thanks go to Stu Mitnik for putting it together! If

any of you have suggestions as to how we can improve and promote the page let us know.

Again, I hope you all have had a great summer and I look forward to seeing many of you on Sep-

tember 5th

at the club meeting. Be sure to come!

New Honeywell Corporate policy will no longer provide the Club with lists of new retirees or deceased employees. If these policies stay in force, we will need all Club Members to inform us if you know of a new retiree or if you have learned of the passing of a former employee.

Monthly Charity News

Your Board of Directors has voted to donate $100 each month to the Scholarship Fund and the other $100 to local charities as usual. Our May donation went to Arizona Special Olym-pics. Club guidelines dictate that we support local charities exclusively. A list of the chari-ties from which the board chooses donations monthly is posted on the website. If you have a favorite charity you would like the club to consider for donations, please bring it to our atten-tion.

50/50 winners were Dolf Strom and Frank Holman.

If anyone has contact information for any of these members, please call or email Stu Mitnik at 480-897-1629 or [email protected]

Scholarship applications, for next year, opened this December 1st. The Scholarship Program is jointly sponsored by the Honeywell Retirees’ Social Club, and the Garrett Retirees' Social Clubs of Arizona. The source of the funds for these scholarships is shared among the participating Retiree Clubs, Honeywell International (HON), and our generous members.

Our goal is to identify eligible undergraduate and graduate college students, who are descendants of a participating Retiree Club member, and award them money to help reduce their costs for a college education. Our awards generally range from $1000 to $1200 per recipient per year, based on the funds that are available. To date, we have awarded almost 50 thousand dollars, to 46 students attending Arizona State, University of Arizona, and Northern Arizona University.

Find application and award information on our website at: http://hrcaz.org/PermPages/Scholarships.htmlwww.hrcaz.org.

Our Foundation Board Members are also happy to help. Contact info is below.

WE HAVE fOURTEEN SCHOLARSHIP APPLICANTS FOR

THIS YEAR.

Dues notices will be mailed soon. As a reminder to those of you who have summer addresses on record, we send the notice to both your summer and winter address because of how the USPS handles mail forwarding.

We will provide the information on how much you owe in dues (if any) and give you the opportunity to donate to the Scholarship Program. In addition, we will provide, and ask you to verify or correct your email address (if any). If the USPS returns the notice as undeliverable, we will try to contact you by phone to update our contact information.

We also ask if you want to receive our annual roster.

We thank all members for help in keeping the Club functioning smoothly.

Our social hour begins at 1:00 pm, club business is conducted at 1:45 pm, the presentation starts at 2:00 pm and adjournment is at 3:00 pm.

The history of Honeywell, old editions of the Newsletter and a link to Scholarship Program information and forms can be found on the GRC webpage http://www.garrettretireesaz.com/

If there is something that you would like to see in the newsletter, or if you want to comment on the News-letter itself, write a letter to the editor or e-mail the information to [email protected]! We will publish it, space available and the approval of the Board. Any comments or claims made within the publication are solely the responsibility of the individual authors and do not necessarily express the views of Honeywell Inc. or the Directors, Officers, Staff or members of the Garrett Retirees’ Club of Arizona. Previously, if we were notified of employment opportunities, we would post them in the newsletter. Henceforth, the infor-mation concerning these opportunities will be sent to members by a special email.

With our revised club guidelines that will change the roles and increase the number of Board Members, we are again encouraging members to attend Board Meetings as a guest to influence and support Club policies.

1st Fall meeting - Sep 5 – presents Paula Sherman, docent at the

Musical Instrument Museum, MIM.

Founded in 2011, and privately funded by Robert Ulrich, former CEO of Target, the museum is unique in the world because it is global, representing 200 countries, and also due to the cutting edge technolo-gy of the guide ports that synchronize with the videos in the exhibits. MIM has a theater seating 299, of-fices, preservation lab, cafe/restaurant, event rooms, and school education rooms. Paula Sherman has been associated with Musical Instrument Museum since 2012. She has been a do-cent for the past five years, and is also a gallery guide, information desk guide, mentor, and player of the mechanical music gallery Orchestrion the largest instrument in the Museum. Aside from sports events, MIM is the # 1 tourist attraction in Phoenix.

Wife's Diary:

Tonight, I thought my husband was acting weird. We had made plans to meet at a nice restau-rant for dinner. I was shopping with my friends all day long, so I thought he was upset at the fact that I was a bit late, but he made no comment on it.

Conversation wasn't flowing, so I suggested that we go somewhere quiet so we could talk. He agreed, but he didn't say much. I asked him what was wrong; He said, "Nothing." I asked him if it was my fault that he was upset. He said he wasn't upset, that it had nothing to do with me, and not to worry about it. On the way home, I told him that I loved him. He smiled slightly, and kept driving. I can't explain his behavior. I don't know why he didn't say, “I love you, too.” When we got home, I felt as if I had lost him completely, as if he wanted nothing to do with me anymore. He just sat there quietly, and watched TV. He continued to seem distant and absent. Finally, with silence all around us, I decided to go to bed. About 15 minutes later, he came to bed.

But I still felt that he was distracted, and his thoughts were somewhere else. He fell asleep; I cried. I don't know what to do. I'm almost sure that his thoughts are with someone else. My life is a disaster. Husband's Diary:

Medical Advice

I don't understand why prescription medicine is allowed to advertise on TV, or

why anyone would think of trying one of the medicines, especially after listening

to the laundry list of warnings of possible side effects. But this is definitely an

exception!

Do you have feelings of inadequacy?

Do you suffer from shyness?

Do you sometimes wish you were more assertive?

Do you sometimes feel stressed?

If you answered yes to any of these questions, ask your doctor or pharmacist

about Cabernet Sauvignon.

Cabernet Sauvignon is the safe, natural way to feel better and more confident.

It can help ease you out of your shyness and let you tell the world that you're

ready and willing to do just about anything.

You will notice the benefits of Cabernet Sauvignon almost immediately and, with

a regimen of regular doses, you'll overcome obstacles that prevent you from liv-

ing the life you want. Shyness and awkwardness will be a thing of the past. You

will discover talents you never knew you had.

Cabernet Sauvignon may not be right for everyone. Women who are pregnant or

nursing should not use it but women who wouldn't mind nursing or becoming

pregnant are encouraged to try it.

Side effects may include:

Dizziness, nausea, vomiting, incarceration, loss of motor control, loss of cloth-

ing, loss of money, delusions of grandeur, table dancing, headache, dehydration,

dry mouth, and a desire to sing Karaoke and play all-night Strip Poker, Truth Or

Dare, and Naked Twister.

Warnings:

The consumption of Cabernet Sauvignon may make you think you are whispering

when you are not.

The consumption of Cabernet Sauvignon may cause you to tell your friends over

and over again that you love them.

The consumption of Cabernet Sauvignon may cause you to think you can sing.

The consumption of Cabernet Sauvignon may create the illusion that you are

tougher, smarter, faster and better looking than most people.
