Genius Hour Essential Question Generator

The purpose of Genius Hour is not just to summarize all that you can on your topic, instead you need to build on your understanding of the topic. To become an expert. Your research will answer an Essential Question. An Essential Question asks that you move beyond just studying something to move into action, to make change, to form an opinion, or make something. An Essential Question cannot be answered by simple facts, or a "yes" or "no" answer.

My general topic for genius hour is: ____________________________________________

What do you know about your topic?

List some questions you have on your topic:

ESSENTIAL QUESTIONS (EQs) do not have easy "yes" or "no" answers. EQs try to solve problems, understand complexities, and/or causes & effect. EQs usually start with these types of words:

Some example student essential questions:How did the Ice age start and what happened to the people and the animals?Who created the internet and why? How does this affect our culture today?Who are the most famous artist throughout history. I plan to make a website about famous artists, and re-draw their most famous pieces? How does gravity work, and how come open space has no gravity? How are Solar Systems formed and what is the purpose of them? What other solar systems exist? With help from writing techniques could an eighth grader learn more about writing to make a book? How has architecture changed over the years with regard to materials and functions?

Form some preliminary questions:Think about what you know and what you don't know about your topic and form some preliminary Essential Questions. Use the question starters above and below for possible ideas. You will synthesize your preliminary questions into your final Essential Questions for research.

What effect . . . What difference . . . Which is the best . . . Why does it matter that . . . How could things be better . . . What is more important . . .

Narrow down your ideas from above to your favorite. Form your final Essential Question.
