NestledinthefoothillsoftheApennineMountainsinthenortheasternpartofCentralItaly,UrbinoisaUNESCOWorldHeritageSitewithabreathtaking,perfectlypreservedhistoriccenterandfascinatinghistory.

DuringtheRenaissanceUrbinoblossomedundertheenlightenedruleofDukeFedericodaMontefeltro,askillfulstatesmanandenthusiasticpatronofartandliterature.ManyleadinghistoricalfigureslenttheirlustertotheMontefeltrocourt,includingpainterPierodellaFrancesca.

UrbinoisalsothebirthplaceofRaphael,oneofthemostimportantpaintersoftheItalianRenaissance.

TodayUrbinoprovidestheidealsettingforaUniversity.TheoldhistoriccenterhousesmostoftheUniversity’scollagesformingastudent-friendlycampuswhereeverythingiswithineasywalkingdistance,locals,studentsandprofessorsmixcasuallyinthesquares,narrowstreetsandcafés.

ThecityofUrbinoisnestledinalandscapemoldedforcenturiesbyhumanintervention,theancientcityofUrbinostandsonaheadlandbetweentherivervalleysoftheMetauroandFoglia,protectedbyitsimpressivecitywall.Itsoriginalappearance,suggestiveofthebowsofaship,wasgivenbytheRomanswhofoundedthemunicipalityofUrvinumMataurense,fromwhichthenameUrbinomayhavederived.Urbinoretaineditsprow-likeshapethroughouttheMiddleAges,untiltheMontefeltrodukestransformeditintooneofthemostbeautifulcitiesoftheItalianRenaissance.

Thegreatsoldier-statesmanandmanofletters,DukeFedericodaMontefeltro,commissionedthearchitectsLucianoLauranaandFrancescodiGiorgioMartinitobuildhispalace,whichrapidlybecameafocalpointforthefinestspiritsoftheAgeofHumanism.Thispalace,or“cityintheformofapalace”,whichblendssobeautifullywiththesurroundingcountryside,wastoserveasamodelfornumerousotherRenaissancecourts.AmongtheleadingfigureswholenttheirlustretotheMontefeltrocourtwerepainters,suchasPierodellaFrancesca,PaoloUccello,MelozzodaForlì,JustusofGhentandPedroBerruguete,writers,suchasBaldassareCastiglioneandPietroBembo,architects,suchasLeonBattistaAlberti,philosophers,mathematicians,suchasLucaPacioliandPaulusvonMiddelburg,andpoetsBernardoandTorquatoTasso.

UrbinohasbeenthebirthplaceofanumberofotherimportantfiguresinItaliancultureincludingthearchitectGirolamoGenga,thepaintersRaphaelandFedericoBarocci,thearchitectandmathematicianMuzioOddi,duringhisperiod,thewriterPaoloVolponi,whowasintimatelyinvolvedwithUrbinountilhisdeathin1994.ItwastothememoryofFederico’sson,DukeGuidobaldo,whosuccessfullykeptuptheculturalsplendoroftheUrbinocourt-albeitwithincreasinglyfrequentcontributionsfromthepapacy-thatBaldassareCastiglionededicatedhisfamousbook,“TheCourtier”.CastiglionehadbeenaguestatthecourtofUrbinoandheldimportantpositionstherefrom1504onwards,andhisbookwasintendedtodescribethemodelcourtier,theidealRenaissancegentleman,whomhehadseensomemorablyembodiedMontefeltro

court.In1506,justtwoyearsbeforehedied,DukeGuidobaldofoundedtheCollegiodeiDottorionwhichthemodernUniversityisbased.

UniversityofUrbino

History

TheUniversityofUrbinodatesbackto1506whenDukeGuidobaldoIfoundedthe“CollegiodeiDottori”,andfromitsinceptionitcontinuedtoexpand.

Whilethestudentbodyandfacultiesgraduallyincreasedanddevelopedovertime,itwasunderthelongandfruitfulpresidencyofSenatorforLife,CarloBo,thattheUniversityenjoyedunprecedentedgrowthinsizeandprestige,promptingtheformerPresidentoftheEuropeanCommunityCommission,RoyJenkins,tostatethat“theUniversityofUrbinoisanincisivepresenceincontemporarythought,contributinginoriginalwaystotheculturalandintellectuallifeofEurope”.TheUniversityofUrbinonowhasaround20,000studentsandisknownforthequalityofitsteachingandresearch.

ThesizeandorganizationoftheUniversityencouragesadirectrelationshipbetweenstudentsandteachersandallowingstudentstotakefulladvantageofallcampusservicesandfacilities.Urbino,theidealRenaissancecity,hasbecometheidealcityforstudy,alivelyandstimulatingcampus-townperfectlysuitedforstudentlife.

TheUniversityofUrbinogrewoutoftheCollegiodeiDottori,whichwasalreadyactivearoundthemiddleofthefifteenthcenturyand“authorizedtoactasanappealcourtinvolvingtheDuchyofUrbino”.AttherequestofDukeGuidobaldodaMontefeltro,thiscollegewasofficiallyrecognizedinapapalbullof1507,issuedbyPopeJuliusIIofthedellaRoverefamily,andentrustedwiththeadministrationofpenalandcivillawthroughouttheDuchy.

In1564,PopePiusIVgrantedtheCollegio“leavetocrowntwopoetslaureateannually,toconferdegreesincanonandcivillaw,toawardacademicqualificationsinthearts,inmedicineandintheotherfacultiesrecognizedbytheUniversityarticles,andtoappointnotaries”.Atthestartoftheseventeenthcentury,CollegiodeiDottoribecameaStudioPubblico,atransformationsanctionedbyDukeFrancescoMariaIIdellaRovere.Shortlyafterwards,theDuchyofUrbinowasabsorbedintothePapalState,thoughtheprivilegespreviouslybestowedupontheCollegiowereallreconfirmed.

TheUrbinocommunityreplacedtheDukesdutiesand“StudioPubblico”resumeditsactivitiesonanevengranderscale,withchairsofMathematics,Physics,Logic,MetaphysicsandTheologybeingaddedtothoseofLaw.Finally,in1671,PopeClementXissuedabullfounding“UnaUniversitasStudiGeneralis”,theUniversityofUrbino,whichpromptlybrokeawayfromCollegiodeiDottori,drafteditsownconstitutionandpursueditsowncourse.PopeClementX’ssuccessor,ClementXI,adescendantoftheAlbanifamilyofUrbino,enlargedtheUniversity,gaveitfreshimpetus,broadenedthecurriculumandopenedanewcitizensandstudyUniversitylibrary.

IftheearlyhistoryofUrbinoUniversityiscloselylinkedtotheMontefeltroanddellaRoverefamilies,itowesitslaterrecognitionandenlargementtovariouspopesaswellastotheenterpriseoftheAlbani-afamilywhoprovidedItalywithanumberofpopescommittedtoensuringthecontinuingprosperityfirstoftheCollegiodeiDottoriandlateroftheStudioPubblicoandtheUniversity.Ina1721brief,PopeInnocentXIIIfinallyreconfirmedalltherightsgrantedovertheyearstowhatwastobecometheUniversityofUrbino.Italianunityin1860markedthestartofanewperiod.ARoyalChapterof1862declaredUrbinoanIndependentUniversityandinstructedtheprovincialadministrationtoprovideitwithachapterandanannualgrant.TheLawFacultyandacertainnumberoftwo-yearcoursesheldattheFacultyofPhysicsandMathematicswereratified,aswellascoursesatwhatwastobecomethePharmacyFaculty.

Inthe1920’s,“UrbinoUniversitygainedrecognitionasanIndependentUniversity”withachapterwhichgrantedstateaidpossiblebutnotmandatory.SotheUniversityhadtocontinuetomakedowithstudentenrolmentfees,thecontributionfromtheprovincialadministrationandincomefromitsownestates.OncefullyrecognizedasanIndependentUniversity,studentnumbersgraduallyincreasedasmorefacultieswereopened.Duringthe1960’sand1970’stheUniversitysucceededinpurchasingquiteanumberofderelictpalacesintheoldcentrewhichhavesincebeenrestoredandusedasfacultyanddepartmentbuildings.

ThiswasalsotheperiodthatarchitectGiancarloDeCarlodesignedandbuilttheUniversityHallsofResidencewhichcanaccommodate1,500students.TodaytheUniversityofUrbinoisaStateUniversity.Itnumbers10collagesandabout17,000students.Itsnumerousdepartmentsarehousedinbuildingsofoutstandingarchitecturalinterest,anditoffersstudentsandscholarsawiderangeofcoursesandresearchopportunities.Urbinoprovidestheidealsettingforauniversity:theancientcitywithinwalkingdistanceandpeople,teachersandstudents.(www.uniurb.it)

Thecampusislocatedoutsidethecitywalls,one-kilometerdistance,a15min.walkonflatlandfromthecenteroftown.Thecampusisamodern-hightechfacilitythatcurrentlyfunctionsasacampusforItalianstudents,surroundedbyamagnificentpanoramatothegreenhillsthatsitjustbelowthebuildings.

ThecampuswasdesignedbyfamousarchitectGiancarloDeCarlowho,alongwithacommitteeofItalianandinternationalstudents,workedtogetherforseveralyearsintheplanninganddesignofthecampus.Togethertheystudiedaconceptinordertocreateacampusthatreflectedstudentlifeinahistoricalcontext,butwithmodernfacilitiesthatmetalltheneedsforstudentlifeawayfromhome.

Evenifthecampusisfullofstudents,itwasdesignedtogiveasenseofunlimitedopen-spacesothatstudents,facultyandvisitorsmayneverfeelcrowdedordisturbed.

Theroofofthelibrarybuildingiscomprisedofaseriesofgreenroofgardens,unfortunatelyatthetimetheywerebuilttechnologydidnotfavorthisforwardthinkingconcept,thereforethegardenshavenotbeenusedormaintainedappropriately.GiancarloDeCarlo,hasworkedontherestorationofmanyhistoricalpalacesinUrbino.

Thecampusiscomposedofarestaurant,conferencerooms,libraryandtheater.Avideorentalfacility,TVroom,wirelessloungingareas,laundryrooms,storageroomsforluggage,publictelephones,acaféandreadingrooms.

TheArchitectGiancarloDeCarlo(December12,1919-June4,2005)wasanItalianarchitect.

HewasborninGenova,Liguriain1919.Heworkedasanarchitectfrom1942to1949,atimeofpoliticalturmoil,whichgeneratedhisphilosophytowardlifeandarchitecture.Libertariansocialismwastheunderlyingforceforallofhisplanninganddesign.DeCarlosawarchitectureasaconsensus-basedactivity.Hisdesignsaregeneratedasanexpressionoftheforcesthatoperateinagivencontextincludinghuman,physical,cultural,and,historicalforces.Hisideaslinkedinternationalidealswithlatetwentieth-centuryreality.

DeCarlowasamemberofTeam10alongwithAlisonandPeterSmithson,AldovanEyck,andJacobBakema,amongothers.Althoughhispoliticalbeliefshavelimitedhisportfolioofbuildings,hisideasremaineduntaintedbypostmodernistbeliefsthroughhisjournalSpazioeSocietà-Space&Society,andhisteachingat

theInternationalLaboratoryofArchitectureandUrbanDesign(ILAUD).
