Academic SupportStudents have access to computers and the Internet through

the Center of Computer Services and through the EnglishLanguage Resource Unit, which also houses a large collection ofself-access materials for language improvement. SUT library hasa good collection of books and journals as well as inter-libraryloan services. SUT has active links with the University of Canberraand Macquarie University, Australia; Essex University, Englandand many others in the US.

Trimester SystemSUT has a trimester system of approximately 12 weeks foreach trimester.

First trimester : May - AugustSecond trimester : September - DecemberThird trimester : January - April

Three credits are given for a course of 3 hours per week for 12 weeks.

International Programs in English Language Studies (ELS)

Our graduate programs are designed to produce professionalswith capabilities in all fields related to foreign languageeducation. The programs are international and conductedentirely in English. There is also a wide variety of internationally-oriented academic activities such as staff and studentexchanges, joint research projects, and special guest lecturers.

1) Master of Arts DegreeA Masterûs degree at SUT requires two or more years

of specialized study beyond bachelorûs level. The courseworkemphasizes language skills development, innovative languageteaching methodology, applications of technology in languageteaching and professional growth, practical language analysis,and research skills. An applicant should have majored inEnglish or should have some professional connection to theteaching of English as a foreign language. Two years oflanguage teaching experience are required for applicants whoseBA is not in English.

A test of English proficiency administered by the university is required for applicantswhose native language is not English. Applicants with a minimum TOEFL score of 550(or 213 on CBT) or IELT (6.5) are exempted from this test.

All applicants are required to submit their transcripts and at least three letters of recom-mendations along with the application form.

Financial Aid and EmploymentResearch grants and teaching assistantships are available for highly qualified

Housing Students are not required to live in university housing; however, the universityoperates dormitories exclusively for graduate students. The rent is 2,800 Baht permonth for a 3-bed fully furnished and air-conditioned room. Reservation(044-224880) is recommended. Many students live off-campus in apartments, whichare about 1,500 baht per month for a studio room. Also, close to campus, there aretownhouses that may range from 2,000 to 3,500 Baht per month.

Suranaree University of Technology was established in 1990 asa public autonomous university It is a university which aims topromote internal and external efficiency and academic freedomin its operations and to form a community of scholars in the arts,sciences, and technology, benefiting both the individual andsociety. Situated in Nakhon Ratchasima, around 240 kilometers

from Bangkok, in the Northeast of Thailand, the university is easily accessible by car,bus, and train.

2) Doctor of PhilosophyA research-oriented doctoral program requires three or more

years of specialized study and research beyond the masterûsdegree. Applicants for the Ph.D. program are expected to alreadyhave a Masterûs degree in some related area, or if they haverelevant postgraduate work experience or academic achievement,they may also be admitted with requirements to undertake somecoursework.A Ph.D. candidate is required to take the following credits.
