VOICE - VERB

TRANSITIVE VERB

Only sentences containing transitive verbs [verbs that takes one or more than one object(s). For example, paint, write, eat, clean, etc.] can be changed from active voice to passive voice. A subject—that is, a ‘doer’ of the action—is required to change a sentence from the passive to the active voice.

A.V. : Agatha Christie wrote the book. P.V. : The book was written by Agatha Christie.

A.V. : He was telling a story. P.V. : The story was being told by him.

Transform the following transitive active sentences into transitive passive sentences :

1. The whole state elects the governor. 2. Children from all countries love that game. 3. The critics reviewed the new Broadway play. 4. The pirates hid the treasure quickly. 5. Terri examined the bugs on the tree.

PASSIVE VOICE FORM OF THE VERB

A verb has three tenses.

1. Present Tense 2. Past Tense 3. Future Tense.

Each tense has the following four forms :

1. SIMPLE Present/Past/Future Tense 2. Present/Past/Future CONTINUOUS Tense 3. Present/Past/Future PERFECT Tense 4. Present/Past/Future PERFECT CONTINUOUS Tense All the first three forms of three tenses, except future continuous tense, have the Passive Voice form of the verbs. The Perfect Continuous Forms of the three tenses do not have any Passive Voice form.

SIMPLE PRESENT TENSE

For the Simple Present Tense use am, is or are with a Past Participle to form the Passive Voice.

A.V. : SUBJECT + V1+S/ES + OBJECT P.V. : OBJECT + IS/AM/ARE + V3 + BY + SUBJECT

A.V. : The waiter carries the trays. P.V. : The trays are carried by the waiter.

A.V. : You like me. P.V. : I am liked by you.

A.V. : Once a week, Tom cleans the house. P.V. : Once a week, the house is cleaned by Tom.

Change the following sentences in the active voice into the passive voice :

1. He helps us.

2. Doctors treat patients.

3. Teachers teach students.

4. Parents bring up children.

5. We love our country.

6. Masons build houses.

7. Carpenters make furniture.

8. Mechanics repair cars.

SIMPLE PAST

For the Simple Past Tense, use was or were with a Past Participle to form the Passive Voice.

A.V. : SUBJECT + V2 + OBJECT P.V. : OBJECT + WAS/WERE + V3 + BY + SUBJECT

A.V. : Dad drove us home. P.V. : We were driven home by Dad.

A.V. : He caught the ball. P.V. : The ball was caught by him.

A.V. : You liked me. P.V. : I was liked by you.

Transform the following transitive active sentences into transitive passive sentences :

1. She made a third attempt. 2. The boy asked a difficult question. 3. She wrote an award-winning novel. 4. The terrorists blew up the bridge. 5. The police caught the thief.

SIMPLE FUTURE

For the Future Tense, use shall or will with be, followed by a Past Participle, to form the Passive Voice.

A.V. : SUBJECT + WILL/SHALL + V1 + OBJECT P.V. : OBJECT + WILL/SHALL + BE + V3 + BY + SUBJECT

A.V. : The choir will sing the next hymn. P.V. : The next hymn will be sung by the choir.

A.V. : We will celebrate her birthday. P.V. : Her birthday will be celebrated by us.

A.V. : They will arrive in the evening. P.V. : No passive voice.

Change the following sentences in the active voice into the passive voice :

1. They will tell you when the time comes. 2. She will accept the offer. 3. I will finish the job by Monday. 4. I will prepare the dinner before you come. 5. You will never forget this lesson.

PRESENT CONTINUOUS

For the Present Continuous Tense, use am, is or are with being followed by a Past Participle, to form the Passive Voice.

A.V. : SUBJECT + IS/AM/ARE + V1 + ING + OBJECT P.V. : OBJECT + IS/AM/ARE + BEING + V3 + BY + SUBJECT

A.V. : The waves are washing away the sandcastle. P.V. : The Sandcastle is being washed away by the waves.

A.V. : She is working on the computer. P.V. : The computer is being worked upon by her.

A.V. : He is praising me. P.V. : I am being praised by him.

PAST CONTIONUOUS

For the Past Continuous Tense, use was or were with being, followed by a Past Participle, to form the passive voice.

A.V. : SUBJECT + WAS/WERE + V1 + ING + OBJECT P.V. : OBJECT + WAS/WERE + BEING + V3 + BY + SUBJECT

A.V. : Jimmy was making our costumes. P.V. : Our costumes were being made by Jimmy.

A.V. : She was reading a book. P.V. : The book was being read by her.

A.V. : We were talking about Francis. P.V. : Francis was being talked about by us.

FUTURE CONTINUOUS

For the Future Tense, it do not have Passive Voice.
