It's not too early for Colorado Cou- nty residents to begin searching their cabinets and garages for unwanted chemicals and to mark their calendars for the one-day household hazardous waste collection this spring.

LCRA invites residents to rid their homes of paints, lawn and garden pes- ticides and herbicides, batteries and chemicals by bringing them to the household hazardous waste collection site Saturday, April 26. The site willy be open from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. at the Colorado County Fairgrounds and Ag- riculture Complex at Crossroads Bou- levard and State Hwy. 71 near Colum- bus. The collection is free.

A product exchange center will be open from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. to allow residents to swap reusable home chemical products such as paint, clean- ers, lawn and garden products and more.

Recyclable materials, including scrap passenger tires, lead-acid batter- ies and used motor oil and oil filters, will also be accepted and recycled. LCRA will dispose of hazardous ma- terials properly.

Residents can also participate in the Adopt-A-Barrel program, a commu- nity fund-raising campaign sponsored by the Colorado River Foundation to support the hazardous waste collection. Through this program, businesses, in- dividuals and organizations can make tax-deductible donations to help recov- er the costs of collecting and properly disposing of household hazardous wastes.

In addition, LCRA is coordinating with school districts throughout Colo- rado County to present LCRA's Beat the Baron Waste education program to elementary schools. The program teaches natural resource conservation and the importance of safe and proper management of hazardous materials.

The household hazardous waste collection is sponsored by LCRA in co- operation with Colorado County, the

communities of Columbus, Weimar and Eagle Lake, Columbus Chamber of Commerce, Colorado County Exten- sion Office and the Colorado River Foundation.

For more information, call Jack Ranney, LCRA program coordinator, at 1 -800-776-5272, ext. 7651. To adopt a barrel, call George Fox at 979-732- 8385 or Bernard Mitchell at 732-2082.

    You'll be glad you did.
