We would like to acknowledge the Worimi people, the Traditional Custodians of this land. We would also like to pay respects to the elders, both past, present and future, of the Worimi nation and extend

    respect to other Aboriginal people.

Welcome back to the school year and a special welcome to new students and families to Great Lakes

College. This is the 17th year of the college and there has been significant achievements made over

those years in positioning the college as one of the most outstanding educational providers on the

    North Coast.

A key to our success over the last decade has been the strong partnerships we have developed with

our parents and local community; we will continue to build on these relationships to ensure our

students receive a quality education with a sense of community responsibility.

I would like to congratulate the YR 12 cohort of 2018 for the well deserved results in their HSC last

year. An outstanding performer was Daniel Morris DUX 2018 achieving an ATAR of 98.25 with 9 other

students receiving ATARs in the 90’s.

Each year we have new teaching and SASS staff joining the college and I would like welcome them to

    the Great Lakes Learning Community.

I look forward to working with the students, staff, SASS and parents in 2019.

Individual and group HSC results indicate 2018 was yet another excellent year for Great Lakes College Senior

    Campus.

HSC success comes in many forms. For some it is high academic achievement, for others it is the combination

of school based study and Vocational Education delivered from the school or by TAFE. For other students

success is completing 13 years of schooling and obtaining a HSC, and in many cases, being the first in the

family to obtain a HSC. We acknowledge and congratulate all our students and your achievements.

A special congratulation to Daniel Morris who is the 2018 DUX of the Senior Campus.

It is a tradition of our school to acknowledge all our students who achieve an ATAR in excess of 90. ATARs of

this calibre are an outstanding result and this year we congratulate Daniel Morris (98.25), Mark Laden

    (95.70), Georgia Lowry (95.40), Joshua Kellett (94.40), Jasmine Campbell-Ellis (92.75), Makayla Randall

(92.75), Jessica Hall (92.40), Alan Thomas (92.75) and Craig Lewis (91.50).

In 2018 students obtained Band 6s, (or equivalent Extension E4 results), in the following subjects: Biology,

Business Studies, Chemistry, Design & Tech, Adv English, English Extension 2, Food Technology, Industrial

Technology, Mathematics General 2, Mathematics Extension 1, Modern History, Music 1, PDHPE, Physics,

Senior Science, Society & Culture, Visual Arts, French Beginners and Spanish Beginners.

In 2016, Great Lakes College Senior Campus participated in a mandatory Department of Education, (DoE),

"External Validation" inspection. One of the measures by which the DoE uses to determine whether a school

excels is the number of students within the school who achieve at least two results in the Band 5 and

6 category. In the 2018 HSC the Senior Campus had 60 students achieving this excellent level.

Such strong results by so many students is a reflection of not only the abilities of our students, their

dedication and application, but also the excellent teaching they have received. In acknowledging my teaching

staff for the excellent job that they have done, I would also like to acknowledge the teachers across the Great

Lakes Learning Community. Our excellent HSC results are a consequence of 13 years of quality education. We

are very lucky to belong to such a strong Community of Schools.

Of our 205 Year 12 Graduates in 2018 we had 63 students who included 1 or more Vocational Education &

Training Course delivered by the school in their HSC. These courses included Construction, Hospitality, Metals

& Engineering, Furnishing, Skills for Work & Vocational Pathways. These students received a full Certificate II

or a Statement of Attainment toward Certificate II on top of the HSC qualification.

    Defence Force Presentation

On Monday 11th February, we had two members of

the Australian Defence force visit Forster Campus to

give students a presentation on careers in the Army,

Navy and Air Force. The presentation, which was made

available to interested students in Year 9 and 10 went

through different ways that students can enter the

Defence Force and also covered the various benefits

available for students who choose this career route.

Presenters also covered the requirements of entry

giving students an appreciation of what they would

need to achieve in their next few years of schooling to

give themselves the best chance of success in their

    chosen pathway.

and time management to help them maximise their potential to achieve their personal best.

To help parents and carers support their children in these key areas, trainers from Elevate

Education will be delivering a 'Parent/Carer Seminar' which will be held at the Forster

Campus library on Thursday 7th March. The one hour seminar will begin at 6.00pm.

Maths Online is back again this year at both Forster Campus and Tuncurry Campus. The

Maths Online school price is $20.00 per student for one full year. It is an excellent

resource for all students for regular revision as well as those who are absent from class

due to illness, extra-curricular activities or sporting commitments. This enables students

who are absent from class to keep up to date with course work. Each lesson offered on

Maths Online is around five minutes duration and addresses a specific skill or process. The

program provides examples as well as the opportunity for students to practise the skills

involved and then provides feedback based on their responses. The Maths Online school

price is $20.00 per student for one full year.

Forster Campus students wishing to subscribe for 2019 will be required to pay $20.00 to

the front office by Friday 1st of March. Students then must show their receipt to Mr Mani,

so their account can be set up for use.

Monday the 18th of February, Great Lakes College Forster Campus hosted the welcome BBQ for the parents and carers of year 7 students at the Forster bullring. This gave the community an opportunity to meet all staff and consult both teaching and executive staff regarding their students and the transition into high school. A huge thankyou to Gary Bishop (SLSO) for saving the day. The BBQ's at the event were empty of gas, but like our amazing SLSO's in the classroom supporting our students, Gary saved the day returning to Forster Campus to race the support BBQ back to the event and allow the afternoon to continue as planned. The event was well attended, with all staff and a solid turn out from the community. A huge thankyou to all that were in attendance and a special thankyou to Nadine McCristal-Cavenagh for her generosity of bringing cupcakes for all in attendance. They were delicious and your effort and kindness was very much appreciated.

Motivated Music students from years 10 to 12 were amazed by the breadth of talent on display at

Bravissimo, the Mid North Coast’s equivalent of Encore. The Bravissimo concert at Port Macquarie’s

Glasshouse featured exceptional musicians from public and private schools across the district, with all

three HSC Music courses represented. Students performing had to have received outstanding results

in order to be nominated for inclusion. Great Lakes College was proud to applaud former student

Keegan Gibson after his performance of Ben Kovic’s “The Journey” on acoustic guitar. Keegan was

also a featured soloist in the showcase’s encore performance of “Best Day of My Life”.

(Pictured - graduated GLC student and “Encore” nominee, Keegan Gibson.)

GLC students were inspired and motivated from the depth of expression, stylistic interpretation and

dedication on display from all vocalists and instrumentalists. Music styles included in the program

ranged from American Folk music, Popular and Rock Music to Romantic, Contemporary Classical and

Jazz. The concert reflected the diverse interests and skills of students and was an excellent

demonstration of the performance elective options for students studying the Music 1 course here at

    the Senior Campus.

DO U HAVE A BAND AID BECAUSE I JUST SCRAPED MY KNEE

    FALLING 4 YOU

    SRC SENIOR CAMPUS

Here we go again. Valentine’s Day. A single person’s worst

nightmare. The preparations began in an SRC meeting two weeks

before the day arrived. No one knew what to expect. Would this

year’s celebrations cause us to cringe so hard, permanent

wrinkles form on our foreheads? Or could the SRC save all single

people here at Senior Campus from the endless declarations of

love over social media. I’m too young for wrinkles, so I hoped for

    the latter.

The answer was clear. Us, the SRC had to save a dying celebration while also raising money for the

school. First, we planned a store. It included all Valentine’s Day essentials: Chocolate Roses, Chocolate

Hearts, your run-of the mill Valentine’s Cards and most importantly, Meme Cards. This gave an

opportunity for not just couples to buy gifts for their loved ones but for single people to exchange

memes with friends and show their appreciation for one another. How else do you show your

appreciation, other than through a Vladimir Putin themed meme? We also came up with an ingenious

idea: busking in the CAFF. This gave an opportunity for Year 12 music students to prepare for their

HSC performances later in the year while also providing entertainment for lunch and recess. Over the

next two weeks, preparations were in full force. Buskers were assembled, memes printed and roses

    bought.

From left to right: Dannielle Dobson, Jack Galbraith, Grace Forrester

  • Issue 1—Term 1—Week 5 Page 16

The day arrived. Shrek meme cards and chocolate roses were bought and exchanged between

husbands and wives, girlfriends and boyfriends, friends and friends. Some were even bought and

received by the same person. It didn’t take long for the store to run out of stock, leaving Valentine’s

Day cards in everyone’s pockets while money in ours

We were then treated to a variety of performances at lunch and recess. Performances so loud, I don’t think I will ever regain full hearing again. We enjoyed solos and group performances by:

Jacob Muenger (Ed Sheeran identity thief)

Jack Galbraith (Jimi Hendrix in the flesh)

Kai Mahony and Matt Tait (Lead Guitarists)

    Jordan Fowler (Screemo on legs)

Grace Forrester (ChRiStInA aGuiLeRa, iS tHaT yOu?)

    Haylea Legge (Communist enthusiast)

    Dale Morris

    Dannielle Dobson

    Joey Taylor

The day was a success for everyone. Raising over $160. Now that I can reflect, I think we all learnt something, the only way to someone’s heart is through Shrek inspired memes.
