MessagePresident’sThe Greater Lynchburg Community Trust has served our

communities in Central Virginia for over 40 years. On October 19, 2012 we celebrated our 40th Anniversary with a Recognition Dinner featuring Leland Melvin as our after-dinner speaker at the James River Conference Center. Our 230 guests were treated to a memorable and interesting presentation by our local astronaut hero. Rosel and Elliot Schewel were recognized with The Quillian Award to cap the evening.

During our anniversary year there were 78 Community Heroes who loyally promoted and supported philanthropy in Central Virginia by pledging an anniversary gift of $10,000 or more to The Community Trust. This broad support by major donors in our community speaks volumes about the giving spirit of the citizens in Central Virginia.

Since its founding in 1972, generous donors have given $32.1 million to The Greater Lynchburg Community Trust. This has enabled us to help those in need and to support the arts, educa-tion, and historical preservation in our area for over 40 years. Our Distribution Committee awarded grants totaling $1,363,719 during the fiscal year ending June 30, 2013.

In order for us to continue this trend and increase our support of much-needed programs in our community, we must continue to have generous gifts like we have had in the past. A gift to The Greater Lynchburg Community Trust is a powerful gift because we are an endowment fund, and your gift will support our com-munity in perpetuity, that is, forever. It is the best investment you can make in your community.

We added 17 new named funds and received contributions of $1,321,051 during the June 30, 2013 fiscal year. Donors to The Greater Lynchburg Community Trust have the satisfaction that their gifts will continue to benefit future generations. And these donors, their families, and their causes will be remembered forever through named funds. The establishment of a named fund is a wonderful way to advance one’s philanthropic interests and to leave a legacy.

The Greater Lynchburg Community Trust ended the June 30, 2013 fiscal year with assets totaling $32,009,302; up 12.3% over $28,500,101 at June 30, 2012.

We are blessed to live in a community that is so supportive. Our citizens understand the “higher calling” to help those in need. The Greater Lynchburg Community Trust has been a conduit for this generous giving in our community for years, and we will be a major player in that role for many years to come. A community endowment fund is magic. It lasts forever.

The success of The Greater Lynchburg Community Trust is the result of a team effort. Thank you to all the donors, volunteer boardmembers, advisors, trustee banks, investment advisors, and staff members for all you have done for The Community Trust. We look forward to serving the community for years to come.

The Greater Lynchburg Community Trust celebrated 40 years of service to our communities during our 2012-2013 fis-cal year. We kicked off the anniversary year with a Celebration Luncheon at Lynchburg College with William F. Quillian Jr. as our featured speaker. The event concluded with the announce-ment of Dr. Quillian as the first winner of The Quillian Award. The 200 people in attendance were treated to an inspiring program and the announcement of two $50,000 gifts, one establishing The Jim Candler Fund for the Pauline F. Maloney Step with Links Program and one establishing The Lynchburg Economic Development Fund.

Our year culminated with our 40th Anniversary Celebra-tion Dinner at the James River Conference Center. The 230 guests in attendance were spellbound by our featured speaker,

hometown hero and NASA astronaut Leland Melvin. Rosel and Elliot Schewel received The Quillian Award, recognizing their long-term service to the community.

We celebrated our 40th Anniversary in a number of ways to commemorate this important milestone. We established “Community Heroes: Making A Difference” recognizing those who have loyally promoted and supported philanthropy in Central Virginia by pledging an anniversary gift of $10,000 or more. During the year 78 individuals or couples made a generous pledge or gift to help their communities. This 40th Anniversary effort resulted in new gifts totaling $1.1 million to The Community Trust. We are fortunate to live in a very giving community.

FundsA Sampling of Our

The Greater Lynchburg Community Trust administers 224 individually named funds. These funds are established to support our community grantmaking, support organizations recommended by the donor, or provide ongoing support for one or more specified charitable organizations. Individual funds range from $10,000 to over $5 million, and they serve a wide range of com-munity needs.

Rachel B. and William E. Blandford Fund - $197,915

In 2012, The Rachel B. and William B. Blandford Fund, an unrestricted fund, was established with a bequest of $172,000 by the Blandford Estate. Income from the fund is distributed annually to fund many worthwhile programs and services in Central Virginia. Mr. Blandford was a career executive with General Electric, while Mrs. Blandford was a teacher in Lynchburg Public Schools for 27 years. Lynchburg became the couple’s adopted home when they moved to the area from upstate New York in the late 1950s. Bill Blandford, the couple’s son, stated that he and his two sisters “were so pleased that their parents’ planning created their gift to The Commu-nity Trust to benefit Lynchburg, which was their home for nearly fifty years. We were so happy that our parents’ gift will help The Community Trust’s work to improve the lives of those in Lynchburg and the surrounding jurisdictions.” The Rachel B. and William E. Blandford Fund is a wonderful example of how we can give back to the community with a gift that lasts forever. And the fund serves as a permanent memo-rial to the philanthropy of Rachel and Bill Blandford.

Brad Sowers Memorial Art Scholarship Fund - $20,254

Brad Sowers grew up in the Lynch Station area of Campbell County. He attended school in the Altavista area until moving out of state after completing his junior year of high school. Brad’s love for art and drawing began at a very early age. His interests and direction took many turns like all youth growing into adulthood, but all throughout art played a major role. He enrolled in art classes during his high school years, and his love for art continued to grow. Brad died in an automobile accident in 2008 at the age of 17. Although he did not live long enough to attain his goals of becoming the cool art teacher that could identify with his students and starting his own graphic art studio, he always planned to give back to the community. In order to make that dream a reality, his family established The Brad Sowers Memorial Art Scholarship so that he can help deserving art students from Altavista Combined School pursue their vision for years to come.

C.W. Seay Fund - $13,163

Clarence W. Seay served as principal of Dunbar High School during its pivotal years in the 1950s and 1960s. He was well-respected by students, teachers, admin-istrators, and the community as a whole. Dunbar students received an excellent academic education as well as valuable lessons in life during Seay’s tenure as principal. His position made him a leader in the African-American community during the difficult years leading to desegregation. He earned the respect of the entire commu-nity and was elected to Lynchburg City Council. He was the first black person since reconstruction to hold the position of City Councilman. The C.W. Seay Fund was established by friends and advisors of Mr. Seay following his death in 1982. The fund is unrestricted and has supported important causes in our community for years.

Daly Legacy Fund - $63,724

The Daly Legacy Fund was established in Lynchburg, Virginia in the year 2009 by Jim and Lynn Daly. Upon the passing deaths of Jim’s parents, Phil and Fran Daly of Danville, Virginia, a charitable trust with over seven million dollars went into effect to be distributed annually to charities in Danville and to charities of choice as designated by the heirs of the estate. Jim Daly’s desire was to use an allocated portion of this trust along with personal donations of he and his wife, Lynn, to establish The Daly Legacy Fund in Lynchburg under the umbrella of The Greater Lynchburg Community Trust as a donor designated fund. A majority of the grants would be awarded to The Boys and Girls Club to start up the endowment fund, and remaining grant monies would be distributed to a select handful of local charities. The donors’ warmest wish is that The Daly Legacy Fund grow from generation to generation and spread out from the Lynchburg community to charities serving the communities of the heirs and descendants of Jim and Lynn Daly.

The Grantmaking Process - $639,966

During its 40-year history, The Community Trust has provided grants totaling $14.3 million to help those in need and to support the arts, education and historical preservation in Central Virginia. A large portion of those dollars are determined by The Community Trust’s Distribution Committee whose current members include Gus Petticolas, Chair; John Alford, Jr., MaryJane Dolan, Ernie Guill, Hank Hub-bard, Ellen Nygaard, Jim Richards, Massie Ware, and Jim Wright. The committee reviews over 100 grant applications over the fall cycle (September 15 deadline) and the spring cycle (March 15 deadline). The Distribution Committee approved $639,966 in grants to community organizations in 2013. As a result of the commit-tee’s conscientious work, the grantmaking process is thorough, fair, and effective in meeting needs in our community. The Community Trust regularly conducts needs assessment studies in cooperation with United Way to ensure that community needs are accurately and effectively addressed in the process. Our community owes a debt of gratitude to our all-volunteer Distribution Committee for their hard work.

Lynchburg Beacon of Hope - $10,000

The Community Trust’s $10,000 grant to Lynchburg Beacon of Hope helped establish Future Centers as physical hubs at E.C. Glass and Heritage High Schools to provide resources and encouragement to all students. Lynchburg Beacon of Hope was born of the Lynchburg City-sponsored Community Dialogue on Race and Racism in 2009. The initiative was launched in partnership with the Lynchburg City Schools. The purpose of Beacon of Hope is to instill in all students the aspiration to pursue and provide the tools and resources to attain a post-secondary education. The program seeks to provide college opportunities for those who would not be able to attend college otherwise, and to change the culture in the Lynchburg community to a “Pre-Kindergarten thru 16 division.” The goal is for all children who graduate to be prepared to the next step in life: 4 year college, 2 year college, technical/community trade school, industry certification.

Grants in 2013A Sampling of Our

In 2013, The Greater Lynchburg Community Trust awarded $1,363,719 to 137 charitable organizations. Our grants support the four major human service areas identified by our needs assessment study – Successful Children and Youth, Strengthening Families and Individuals, Healthy and Independent Living, and People in Crisis Receiving Help. In addition, our grants support the Arts, Education, and Historical Preservation.

Theatre thrives in Central Virginia.

Rebuilding Together Lynchburg - $8,000

Rebuilding Together Lynchburg has been repairing and improving homes of homeowners in Central Virginia for twelve years. Over 450 homes have been touched by the organization’s “Rebuilding” program. The organization’s primary mission is to enable homeowners to remain in safe, warm, and dry homes. These homes are owned by low income families who need assistance to help, maintain, and improve their living conditions. The Community Trust’s grant enables the organi-zation to provide the needed materials for committed volunteers who provide the “donated labor.” In the past year, there were 2,012 hours of volunteer time donated in improvements to 66 homes in Central Virginia. The Community Trust’s $8,000 grant to Rebuilding Together Lynchburg made a significant impact for homeowners in our community this year.

Endstation Theatre Company - $4,930

Endstation Theatre Company was founded in 2006 by Florida State University School of Theatre MFA graduates, Geoffrey Kershner and Krista Franco. The Theatre Company took up residency at Sweet Briar College later that year and went on to produce the company’s first show, The Tell-Tale Heart and The Mind of Poe. Endsta-tion Theatre Company produced the first Blue Ridge Summer Theatre Festival on the college’s grounds in 2008, and the Festival has expanded with each new season. Currently, Endstation produces the only outdoor theatre in the greater Lynchburg area. Sweet Briar College grounds are an ideal setting for outdoor summer theatre. The Community Trust is currently providing funding for the production of In Sweet Remembrance to take place in 2014. This production promises to be an interesting exploration of the complex African American history of the host college, Sweet Briar. The Community Trust is a strong supporter of the arts in Central Virginia.

Our ProgramYouth Philanthropy

24

The goal of The Community Trust Youth Philanthropy Program is to instill in our youth awareness of our community needs and the importance of volunteering and philanthropy.

Two seniors, one male and one female, from 11 high schools within The Community Trust’s service area serve for one year on The Youth Philanthropy Committee of The Community Trust and are responsible for granting $10,000 or more to deserving local charitable organizations that serve the needs of youth in our area. The students are nominated to this program by faculty and staff of their respective school based on their demonstration of excellence in academics, leadership, and community service.

The committee is supervised by Community Trust board members and meets periodically throughout the school year. The students review grant applications, rate the applications, perform site visits of the top 8 applicants and prepare presenta-tions on these applications for the committee as a whole. From this process, a final vote is taken to determine which agency will receive the grant.

These high school seniors awarded $10,000 to Patrick Henry Family Services and $5,000 to Harvest Outreach Center.

After site visits, each group gives a presentation about the non-profit organization visited.

Helen and Sam Williams loved their community and wanted to give back. Sam was born and raised in Lynchburg, and Helen came to Lynchburg to be the organist at St. Paul’s Episcopal Church. They were married in 1949. Sam was a Trust Officer in a Lynchburg bank for 40 years, and Helen spent her life playing the organ and piano and was a substitute organist for about 40 churches in the area. Helen and Sam Williams were all always interested in helping those in need, and by leaving a bequest to The Community Trust they are still giving back to their community.

The Legacy Society recognizes individuals and families who have supported The Greater Lynchburg Community Trust by establishing planned gifts to The Community Trust to benefit our community. Through their philanthropy, these Legacy Society members are helping to meet the needs of our community for generations to come.
