From the President’s Desk by Don C. Jones

As my year as President comes to an end, I want to take this time to thank all of the HAHU Board members that worked so hard this year. When I took over, the country was being introduced to healthcare reform in the form of the Patient Pro-tection and Affordable Care Act. We have come a long way and have a long way to go to understand how this legislation will truly impact our industry. My major concern remains the continued increase in costs, as PPACA did not address this issue, only who pays. I think the next two years will truly define our industry as the regulations are written and the mandates take place. Also impacting this will be the next election cycle and the pending court cases. I am confident our industry will come through this intact. I was also concerned about the NAHU dues increase we faced in January, but our membership committee, headed by Susan Burdette, has kept us whole. We re-main the largest NAHU chapter at 526 members (at this writing), and this is a great accomplishment for our team. We have had several great events throughout the year, most recently the HAHU Golf Tournament at the Woodlands Palmer Course. We were able to donate $2,000 to the Houston Fire Fighter’s Dennis Holder Scholarship Fund from the proceeds. I would like to thank Jeff Bacot, Dirk Blankenship and their committees for a great job with all of the events held throughout the year. Mark Roden led our chapter in helping people enroll in the CHIP Program as our community service effort to get people health insurance. Thank you to all the members who assisted. We were also able to get the entire HAHU membership access to the Houston Business Journal, as well as negotiate a discount program with The Men’s Wear-house. We have a great incoming President in Terrell Rogers, and I am confident that his leadership will take us to the next level. I am excited to see the new board contin-ue to raise HAHU to the new heights. Again, thank you to all of my board mem-bers for the hard work and to the entire membership for their support.

2011 Annual Strategic Board Meeting2011 Annual Strategic Board Meeting2011 Annual Strategic Board Meeting2011 Annual Strategic Board Meeting

by Jeff Bacot, 1st VP

June is upon us, and your local board is ramping up to ensure everything is in or-der and accounted for this fiscal year. The Board will meet at Sullivan’s Restaurant on June 16th for a Strategic Board Meeting to go over everyone’s specific strategic plan for his chair or responsibility. It is imperative that the Board meets to set a plan in place to execute throughout the year. We will go over each person’s re-sponsibilities as it pertains to their chair and subcommittees. Other items such as challenges and forethoughts for the year, will also be discussed. Your Board wants to make sure that we are moving in the right direction to serve the Membership and your needs. We would like to ask if you would like to serve on a committee this year. We have different committees like Golf, Symposium, CE Day and Special Events that need your participation and hard work. Please feel free to reach out to one of us today.

HAHU posts – at no charge to members – job opportunities for our members on the HAHU web-site, www.hahu.org. Moving on Up! by Jeff Bacot, 1st VP

Starting with our Awards Luncheon on June 22nd, we are moving to Sullivan’s Steak-house. Why, some would ask? We have had problems with BraeBurn Country Club (BBCC) on three levels: location, food quality and service. LOCATION: Houston is a BIG city and our membership is spread out all over town. There is nothing that BBCC could do about location; the west side of town is fairly central, but it is too far south. Sullivan’s is located very close to a freeway and is in west central Houston. We believe most of our members will save on toll fees and/or gas with this location. FOOD QUALITY: BBCC seems to have a problem on doing more than one entrée well. I have been to other events at the club where there was only one entrée, and it was good. I have yet to hear that the two or three entrées we had at our BBCC events were ALL good. At one luncheon, my table was served cold tortilla soup, and the chicken was almost as dry as jerky. This may be one of the biggest reasons our lunch crowd has thinned out. SERVICE: We have streamlined our registration, and Kathi Sandler accomplished a lot of this by having nametags, entrée tags and raffle tickets all set out for pre-registrants to make it a quick grab and go. But wait staff was an issue at BBCC. We did have a talk with them, and it seemed to get better every lunch. I think they were responsive to our requests and were very flexible to our having late arrivals and people showing up at the door without res-ervations. We are not sure of Sullivan’s wait staff in this regard, but I have never had bad service during a lunch or dinner. Sullivan’s claims to be even more flexible and committed to providing a four star experience. We received a price increase from BBCC in January of this year, which we were able to get deferred to March. Our HAHU board decided not to pass along this increase until the lunch-eon committee (Lonnie Klene, Travis Middleton, Bill Mann and myself) had concluded its search of new locations. If we had stayed at BBCC, we would have had to increase our price by $1.50, to $29.50. Moving to Sullivan’s is only costing us $2 more than current, making our new member rate with early registration is $30, and we want to thank The Com-pliance Office (TCO) and Bill Mann for stepping up to provide us with a $100 per month val-et sponsorship for the next 12 months, or the price would have gone even higher. Thank you, Bill, and thank you to everyone on my committee. I hope everyone enjoys our new home for lunches; give it a try! We signed a 3-month commitment to Sullivan’s, and we’d like to know your thoughts, so that we can either continue our search or sign a longer agreement. You can email [email protected] or [email protected] with comments or suggestions.

Membership Notes by Susan F. Burdette, CEBS

A Big THANK YOU

to HAHU!!

After 4 years as the HAHU Member-ship Chair, it is now time for me to turn things over to a very capable and energetic Sarah Kramer. I have found this job to be the most rewarding one I have ever had, and I want to thank not only the board and Membership Committee, but all HAHU members for your support. This chapter is not only the largest in the country, but the BEST. Keep up the good work -- I will be watching and cheering you on every step of the way!

HAHU Golf Tournament by Don Jones, President

The HAHU Golf Tournament was held at the Woodlands Palmer Course on Monday April 18th. We had 115 players, and the weather was great. Everyone I spoke with agreed that the course was one of the best we have played. Box lunches were provided by the Woodlands Country Club, and the barbeque din-ner was catered by Straight Off the Road Bar-B-Q out of Crosby - both did a great job. The tournament was held in a Florida Scramble format with three teams tying for first place with 15 under par. The winning team – Michael Muhls from Sun Life and his team - was decided by the Woodlands CC tourna-ment director as the best net score on hole 14. The charity chosen for our event was the Houston Firefighters’ Dennis W. Holder Scholarship Fund. Members from this charity participated in helping with the event, in addition to holding an auction and raffle during dinner. The auction raised about $1,000, and we will be donating additional money to the charity when the final numbers are calculated. This tournament could not have happened without all of the volunteers, the planning committee and the sponsors. Congratulations to HAHU 2nd VP Jeff Bacot, Special Events Chair Dirk Blankenship, Crystal Hoffman and the entire golf committee for a great job in putting this tournament together. Aflac once again led our sponsorship list as the Platinum sponsor. Blue Cross/Blue Shield, MHealth and Humana were our Gold Sponsors. Sun Life, Aetna, HM Insurance Group, George Evans & Associates, Klene & Bratsakis/Core Benefits, United Healthcare, Union Central/Ameritas, Kilpatrick Compa-nies, American General, ICB America, Total Financial Group, Cigna and Transamerica were our Silver Sponsors. MMA TPA was our Beverage Spon-sor and Allstate Worksite was our Golf Cart Sponsor. Thanks to all of our sponsors and to all of our HAHU member volunteers for making this tourna-ment successful.

Notes from the 2011 TAHU Annual Conference by Melanie L. Rogers, HAHU 2nd VP

This year’s TAHU Annual Conference was held at the beautiful Westin La Cantera Resort, on the North side of San Antonio. The event started with a golf tournament on Wednesday May 4th, with the proceeds going to Ava’s Wish, a charity assisting families of children suffering from severe head trauma. A portion was also donated to the TAHU Honorees Corporation. The business sessions opened with the full TAHU Board meeting on Thursday, May 5th. Those not members of the Board had a choice of CE Sessions – one of which was led by our own Ron Ledg-erwood. Ron encouraged the participants to ask themselves the question, “Are You a Peddler or a Benefit Advisor?” After lunch, the Opening Ceremonies began with an inspirational address by Pete Thomas, the At-Home Winner of NBC’s “The Biggest Loser” Season 2. Pete challenged the attendees to be win-ners and provided helpful strategies in the current, difficult marketplace we face in the insurance in-dustry. The ceremony was capped off by the installation of the 2011 – 2012 TAHU Board. The af-ternoon concluded with ample time to visit with exhibitors. Kudos to Dental Select for winning this year’s Best Booth Decoration. Veronica Wingo, HAHU’s Public Service Chair, and her colleagues from around the state turned their booth into a tropical paradise to highlight this year’s top sellers’ awards trip. In a change from previous years, the Hollis Roberson Award Dinner was held Thursday evening, rather than the usual Friday evening, in response to a number of member requests. In the following pictures you can get a flavor of the festivities (or relive a happy moment, if you were there with us). The TAHU website will have a full listing of all awards and award winners. However, there were a few special individual awards worth mentioning here. Misty Baker, of Small Group Specialist fame and ever-present force in the Texas legislature, was awarded the Tom Schilling Outstanding Texan of the Year. The Ken Martin Excellence in Communication Award, named after our own Past Presi-dent (and Pat Martin’s late husband), was given to Rusty Rice. Our own Mike McLaughlin, as last year’s recipient, had the honor to present the 2011 Hollis Roberson Award to C. Briscoe Dunn. Alt-hough Briscoe’s wife went into the hospital unexpectedly, he still came to graciously accept the con-gratulations of his peers and share his heartfelt gratitude. In the general categories, Houston picked up Presidential Citations for Large Chapter and Membership. Friday was filled with a variety of CE and plenty of time to visit with exhibitors. The end of the busi-ness day saw many a happy face as the booth exhibitors’ prize drawings were announced. (Yours truly was one such “happy face.”) But the fun wasn’t over yet. The evening brought with it a good ol’ Texas time with a dance and BBQ at the Leon Springs Dancehall. For those of us who chose to stay, there was additional CE on Saturday morning. This was a very lively 2-hour session with members and the presenter exchanging various ideas on how an agent can best position him/herself once the Health Care Reform Law gets into full swing. The conversa-tion after the CE ended followed most members to Hotel Reception for check-out and into the park-ing lot. Association member sharing ideas and best practices is what this was all about.

The NAHU Annual Convention is being held close to home in San Antonio this year, June 26 – 29. Headquarters will be the Grand Hyatt on the Riverwalk. The new board members will be elected at this meeting, and the delegates will meet and decide any major issues requiring a vote. Each local and each state association is allowed a cer-tain number of delegates based on its membership. As the largest local chapter in the nation, Houston is allowed 11 delegates this year. Registered delegates are Terrell Rogers, Melanie Rogers, Jeff Bacot, Craig Splawn, Marty Budinsky, Rand Wall, Bill Mann, Scott Asarch, Sadie Hooker, Susan Burdette and Stephen King. Alternates are Don Jones and Ron Ledgerwood. These are YOUR delegates, so please get in touch with one or more prior to the convention if you have questions or concerns. Other HAHU members registered to attend as of this writing are Paul Browne, Crystal Hoffman, Susan Lee, Mike McLaughlin, Todd Morrow and Mike Rivera. This is the first national convention held in Texas since 2002 in Dallas, so it is an excellent opportunity to see the workings of NAHU – and to be informed regarding all national issues. You can bet that there will be much to learn regarding the status of national healthcare, as well as workshops to help you better position yourself in the marketplace. If you are unable to attend, but wish to keep track of the happenings, check the NAHU website daily, as NAHU has published a daily news blurb in the last few years. (You may also receive a link in your email.) Pictures will also be posted on the website, and we’ll have a report from Houston’s point of view in the next newsletter. NAHU Convention Comes to Texas

On Tuesday, May 24, Misty Baker conducted a “Train the Trainer” webinar to increase the number of certified instructors of the Small Group Specialist Certification 8-hour CE course. Approximately 10 members around the state participated, including Houston’s Pat Martin. The-se members, after completing some additional paperwork, will be certified to teach this course through TAHU. All licensed agents may take the course for CE, but only TAHU members can receive the certi-fication. Those with certain credentials (e.g., RHU) do not have to take the course, but can re-ceive the designation by passing the test. Misty Baker prepared the course and test, and has been the only certified instructor up until now. No one has yet failed the test. If you would like HAHU to present this course, please contact your Education Chair. If you would like the course presented for your employees, contact Pat Martin directly at [email protected] or 281-496-6710.
