Keynote Address

9:35 am "Microwaves, past and 1990's" —Sogo Okamura, President, Tokyo Denki Univ., Japan

Keynote Abstract:Almost half a century has passed since the first practical use of microwaves. During this

period, extensive R&D have led to steady progress in terms of frequencies, active and passivedevices, transmission lines, and device integration density. An overview of this half-century ofprogress in microwaves is presented and interesting topics are discussed from the followingpoints of view:(1) Exploiting frontier frequencies—from VHF to millimeter-wave and optical frequencies,(2) Transition from vacuum tubes to solid-state devices,(3) Transition from waveguide discrete circuits to planar integrated circuits,(4) Expanding roles—from communications to wide-ranging medical, measurement, and

industrial use.
