Learning Support This has started up in the primary school for the year. A let-

ter will go home to parents whose children are involved. Please help support your child in this programme.

Hats Hats are compulsory for primary and intermediate students

at interval and lunchtimes.

Wanted Parents, if you have unwanted newspapers at home that you

would like to get rid of, we can use them in the multiroom. Please drop them into the office or multiroom. Thanks.

Friday pizza pick up

We are needing more people on our pizza pick up ros-ter. If you can spare an hour on a Friday 12:30-1:30 (at

the latest) to pick up and serve pizzas can you please be in touch with Jo Ward -

homeandschool@hcs.school.nz. The more people rostered

on, the less often you will be required :)

Facebook Page As many of you will have seen we now have a Facebook

page. Feel free to check it out and like it!

Canterbury Track Pants Canterbury Stadium Trackpants are available again and we

will put an order in if there is enough interest. They are

around $60.00 each. Please let the office know if you may want to purchase a pair.

There are two events in the month of March that I would like to bring to your attention. The first involves an exciting opportunity to hear a man at the forefront of Christian education, the sec-ond is the impending departure of our very own Daphne Hawken from paid employment at our school! Dr Richard Edlin is Coming I am pleased to announce that, as part of the staff development in the Special Character of the school, Dr Richard Edlin has been invited to visit our school for three days later in March. Dr Edlin is a director of Edserv Internation, a faith mission serving Chris-

tian education communities around the world. He is an interna-tional speaker on topics relating to worldview and education from a Christian perspective. Dr Edlin is also the author of ‘The Cause of Christian Education,’ a resource that new teachers to our school are encouraged to read. His book has become the ‘go-to’ manual for our school as we consider Christian education. Originally from New Zealand Dr Edlin has served in a number of countries and now bases himself in Australia. Many of our staff have heard Dr Edlin at various conferences so to have him visit our school is a real blessing. Outside of the time that he will spend sharing with our staff and students, other meetings ar-ranged with Dr Edlin include: an invitation to share with the local pastors in the Bay, a meeting with the BOT/BOP and a parent evening on the 17th of March. Richard brings a wealth of knowledge and experience in helping teach a biblical perspective on all of life. A couple of brochures promoting the evening event with Richard have been included in this week’s newsletter. I would strongly encourage you to attend this event and to find someone to bring along with you. I know you won’t be disap-pointed!

Daphne Hawken Going After 17 years of service to Hastings Christian School, Daphne Hawken has decided that, as of March 1, the time is right to step down from the admin role she has been serving in here at school. Daphne has been the HCS ‘Energiser Bunny.’ Her tireless service has always taken her above and beyond the call of duty. As I re-flected on her contribution to our school I was reminded of the Apostle Paul’s commen-tary on another lady with a servant heart. In

Romans 16:1-3 Paul says; ‘I commend to you our sister Phoebe, who is a servant of the church which is at Cenchrea; that you receive her in the Lord in a manner worthy of the saints, and that you help her in what-ever matter she may have need of you; for she herself has also been a helper of many, and of myself as well. Daphne’s departure will see a reshuffle of the administration staff roles with Faye Stanton agreeing to step up into the office receptionist position for the remainder of the term. Faye will also take over the uniform shop. She will make herself available from 2:30 -3:30 on Tuesday afternoons from March 8th to assist those parents wanting uniform items for their children. We are grateful to the Lord for Daphne’s extensive contribution to our school over the years and know that her servant heart will mean that she will still find ways to be a blessing. Athletics Day Athletics Day is tomorrow! Please drop your chil-

dren off at the Hastings Sports Park at 8.40am. En-

sure they have been sunscreened, have

plenty of food and drink, a hat and

house coloured clothing. Parents are

welcome to come and watch anytime

during the day. Year 1-2 students can

be collected at 1pm. All other students

should be collected between 2.45-

3.00pm. Looking forward to a great day!

Family Fun Night

All families are invited to our meet and greet family fun night. Friday 26th Feb-ruary at 5:30pm. Bring along a picnic dinner and come prepared for lots of fun and laughter, and competition. Any questions see Jo Ward

Itinerant Music

Instrumental lessons have started! Payment of fees is now due. There are lessons still available in: cello, violin, drums and all

brass instruments. This is for year 6 and above. Mr Wilson, (our new brass teacher), gave an informative and enjoyable

demonstration of different brass instruments at both assemblies. Please remind your child to practise and bring their

instrument to school on lesson days.

Senior Choir (Years 9 -13)

Senior choir and orchestra have both started. Choir is on

Wednesday mornings at 8:00 sharp and orchestra is on Friday mornings at 8:15sharp. If your child has not signed up

and would still like to be in the choir, It is not too late to sign up if your child would like to join these groups. Please see Mrs

Feyter if you are interested.

Black Barn Concert: "Piano in the Vines" On Friday, NCEA students will be attending a concert at Black

Barn. Four of NZ's best young international musicians

will perform music, talk about how they came to be involved in classical music and give a general workshop. This will be very

inspiring for our students.

Scholastics A reminder that scholastics orders are due at school

by Friday afternoon.

Home & School Committee - new members wanted!

We are on the hunt for new committee members who are willing to share their social and fundraising expertise with

us. We meet once a month on a Thursday at 1.30pm at school and would really love to hear from you. Please contact us

Prayer Items

Our new FAF prefab has been held up due to waiting for

consents etc. Please pray that things may go smoothly

over the next few months as we endeavour to have it up and running for term 2.

Pray also for some of our school families who are

struggling with illness and uncertainty at this time.

Fundraising Lunch—THIS FRIDAY There are a team of students who will be running

in the Relay for Life as

they raise funds for

the Cancer Society

next weekend.

This Friday those stu-

dents will be selling

items for lunch.

Hot chips $2.00

Drinks $1.50

Come to B1 in the morning to order your lunch!

There is also a box on the reception desk if you

would like to make a donation.

WEETBIX TRYATHLON—On the

17th of February, the Weetbix Try-athlon was held. It was at Frimley

Park. The students that took part in B2 were Adriaan, Bailey, Jay and

Jazz. Everyone who participates gets a shiny gold medal. At the

Tryathlon, theres heaps of freebie stands and there were awesome

prizes like snap bands and tattoos.

They also gave out free breakfasts and juice, which were delicious. They also had a huge dance

off which was awesome! The students were exhausted after the race. They galloped like race horses in order to win the

race. All they wanted to do was dash hard out, not jog like the others. When it came to hopping on the bikes and bike

away, none of them were puffed but most of them had but-terflies. They all blatted hard out at the end and were so

relieved at the end of the race. When they crossed the finish

line everybody was given a shiny medal and they all wanted to do it again. They felt like they had to run for their lives.

Year 13 Camp—On the 2nd of February the year 13 class

left school to start our trip to Ted Palmer’s bach in Taupo.

The two hour journey was filled with sick beats and off tune

singing. When we arrived at the waterfront site, we pitched

our tents. This was followed by a series of activities prepared

by the teachers and Mr Palmer. We did these to build trust

and teamwork skills, which paid off for Katie and the physics

class who won. Ted then took us out on his beautiful boat to

go biscuiting on the lake while the rest of us hung out in the

water with the paddle boards and kayaks. Later Ted sat us

down and gave us a devotion that really inspired us to be the

best leaders that we could be and make wise choices. The

next day we packed up and set off for Waitomo Caves. We

spent the next two and a half hours 65 feet floating through

underground caves. The guides informed us of all the differ-

ent things we would encounter underground including eels

and glowing maggot poop. It was an amazing experience.

After the caving we headed up for some complimentary soup

and bagels. We arrived afterwards at the Waitomo Top 10

holiday park where we really just hung out in the pool and

watching the cricket after we had set up our tents. Dinner

was sausages and bread and then Mr Feyter took us for a

walk through the bush and some more caves. Back at the

camping ground we had another great devotion, decorated

certain tents with glowsticks and went to bed. The next

morning we headed back to Lake Taupo again for a short

swim and to feed a collection of seagulls, ducks and swans

some of our lunch. We would like to say thank you to Mrs

Pratt, Mr Feyter, Mrs Clark and Mr and Mrs Palmer for making

our time at camp both possible and amazing. Thanks to all

the year 13’s as well because you all made the camp fun and

New Teacher Profile – Mrs Emma Nicoll Emma Nicoll is our new Year 7-10 Food and Fabric Technology teacher. Originally from Hastings, Emma, travel abroad after

school and then studied in Wellington before returning to the Bay to work at Flaxmere Primary where she has worked on

and off for the last 14 years. Emma,

her husband, Herb and 3 children; Pearl, 8, Charlie Jane 6, and Tyson, 4,

fellowship at The Gathering Place Church in Hastings. At church, Herb

and Emma serve as the youth pastors,

and Herb is also the drummer in the worship team.

SILVER SPOON AWARD The silver spoon award for week 2 goes to Tian Burger in year 10 for his quiet and cooperative

team work. He efficiently helped his team to clean up then helped other groups as well.

The silver spoon award for week 3 goes to Rachel Akkerman

in year 9 for her teachable spirit and willingness to help and guide other students.
