The first firm established, which would eventually become Inventure Design, was founded on April 1, 1997. Principal Jim O’Neill created a company offering interior architecture and design services with the skills of a large, well-established firm while maintaining personalized attention. Utilizing knowledge gained from years of association with larger firms, the new company would offer cutting edge innovation with direct focus on attention to detail.
The emergence of an interior architecture firm with sophisticated design talent was ideal for the ever increasing corporate-type businesses in Houston, each looking for the personal attention that this new firm would provide. The creative success of each project led to frequent referrals, and the firm quickly grew.
In 1998, the firm opened a new office designed by its three employees, functioning as a showcase to their talents. That same year, a relationship was established with FKP Architects. The two firms began working on Texas Children’s Hospital (TCH), leading the previously corporate focused firm intohealthcare design.
1999 brought the incorporation of five new employees, an additional principal and an office expansion. In 2002, the firm was presented with the Business Week/Architectural Record “Architecture is Good Business” Design Award
for their work on the TCH project, the first awarded to a healthcare project. Though corporate interiors still represented 90% of their work, the TCH success led to a project withM.D. Anderson’s Cancer Center. As a result, the size of the firm and the amount of work continued to grow.
By 2004, the firm had grown to 18 employees and began working outside of Houston. The firm’s continued success led to a joint venture/merger with the interiors department of FKP Architects in 2005. With this merger, the firm changed names to O’Neill Hill and Associates (OHA). OHA began 2008 with the departure of the co-principal and decided to begin the next year as a new firm.
In 2009, OHA re-launched as Inventure Design, complete with a new brand identity and an infusion of enthusiasm. Inventure Design retained all of OHA’s associates and continued to add talent to their high-profile team.
The team has expanded into a studio of 28, including two additional principals- Michael Kopecky and Raymond Romero. Today, Inventure Design can boast an 87% return rate on clientele, which includes 10 of Houston’s top 100 financially ranked companies. This success created a need to open offices in Dallas, Texas, Tulsa, Oklahoma and Nashville, Tennessee to continue establishing itself in the industry as the ‘go-to’ interior design firm in the region.

VISUALIZATION
The last phase of inVisioning is the use of a tablet-based application that allows the client to have the final working drawings and images linked to the actual CAD-based information model. This app gives the client and the contractor the ability to access a complete set of current drawings with the touch of a finger. Using touch based controls, the app allows simple navigation around and through the workspace.
InVisioning was developed to help our clients with the design process throughout the life-cycle of a project. Through the use of object based CAD software, we are working in 3D at all times, even during preliminary Test-Fits. As a result, we are able to show our clients how the space will look in 3D at a stage when decisive decision making will quicken the overall process.
As the preliminary drawings progress, we are able to modify and update the 3D views as changes are requested to allow the client to walk-thru the space and view updates in real time.
When the design becomes finalized, we use a software package in-house that gives a photo-realistic view of the design and implements the actual finishes. This powerful software, used by Sony and Pixar, allows clients to actually ‘see’ the final space.

PROJECTS PROSPERITY
Our design approach creates enduring and healthy spaces for people and our planet.
PEOPLEWe do this because of the people. Development significantly impacts people and communities, and it can be a powerful catalyst. We can create designs that enhance the relationship between humans and their environment.
PROJECTSWe do this through our projects. Design is the tool we use to underline our commitment to doing the right thing. We thank our clients for the opportunity to use their projects as our sandbox and are excited about what we learn together.
PROSPERITYWe do this for the betterment of all. Prosperity goes beyond profitability and looks at more than the financial aspects of a project or initiative. By taking into account the human and community impacts as additional measurements of success, a broader return on investment can be found.
We design spaces with the principles of social, economic and ecological sustainability. The built environment is at an exciting threshold as new technologies emerge at a rapid rate. Our team stays on the cutting edge of how to push design to achieve healthy, coherent, people-based spaces for our clients. AMERICAN SINUS INSTITUTE
The project consisted of a new medical office in Houston for the American Sinus Institute with a design that emphasized elements from their revised logo, while also creating an airy and fresh atmosphere to suit their specialty type of care. Twisted resin panels in the front waiting area and nurse
stations support the continual theme of free flowing air. In using a palette consisting of earth tones, Inventure created a space that is calm, warm and inviting for the client’s patients to feel relaxed before a procedure. The design also complimented the staff’s work flow to increase efficiency.

BEN TAUB HOSPITAL CT SCAN ROOM
Inventure Design was selected to update finishes and flooring in the current Ben Taub CT Scan Room, as well as coordinate the installation of the new CT Scanner.
The new CT Scanner weighed 4,000 pounds, and posed many challenges including travel path, flooring protection and door clearances. Inventure Design worked with the equipment vendor and structural engineer to ensure that the removal of the old equipment,
and replacement with the new disturbed the hospital as minimally as possible.
The former space was busy and cluttered, ultimately not providing the best design for the necessary equipment and supplies. Inventure Design was able to provide more effective solutions while making the space lighter and brighter.

BEN TAUB HOSPITAL RENAL DIALYSIS SUITE
The project was a renovation of the existing Renal Dialysis Suite within Ben Taub Hospital. The scope of the project included replacing the existing Deionized Water Purification system with a new Reverse Osmosis Water System. Due to the nature of the renovation, a review with the Texas Health and Human Services was required and state-driven Dialysis Suite requirements needed to be incorporated into the renovation.
Using custom designed millwork, the RO water loop system was designed on the interior face of the walls to allow for ease of maintenance. Harris Health System standard finishes were utilized to meet Harris Health established aesthetics. The end result was a treatment space that included more efficient work space, vibrant lighting and a space that allows patients to feel comfortable and relaxed during what can sometimes be a long and exhausting procedure.

CHILDREN’S HOSPITAL OF ORANGE COUNTY
The CHOC Tower II added 144 beds to the facility and provided themselves a physical and operational identity. The design incorporated a new ER, OR and D & T capabilities that were showcased in a clean and contemporary interior concept. Wayfinding was a major element, with
travel and navigation guides woven seamlessly into the interior concepts to allow for intuitive direction. The use of abstract natural references allowed the institution to ground themselves in the context of their origins while reaching across a multi-lingual, multi-cultural range of clients.

CHRISTUS STEHLIN FOUNDATION FOR CANCER RESEARCH
This non-profit institute was extremely budget conscious, as most of their funds are directly funneled into cancer research. After occupying two buildings for 50 years, our firm was tasked with moving and integrating the teams into a new, flexible space. The new facility featured secure property access and upgraded technology to compliment the existing equipment.
The design paid tribute to the Stehlin image with an incorporated color palette, Donor Tribute Wall and historical artwork.
The Donor Tribute Wall paid homage to major contributors and the importance their funds have on the developing a cure for cancer.

DIAGNOSTIC CLINIC OF HOUSTON
Occupying their existing building for almost 30 years, the client elected for a complete makeover. The only requirement from the forty doctors in the practice was for the careful, personal attention to patients to continue. Three contiguous
floors housed the clinics and laboratory, with a separate floor for an administrative office, IT room and staff lunch room. The first floor became the diagnostic imaging suite with X-ray, mammography, nuclear medicine, CAT and MRI.

HARRIS HEALTH SYSTEM
Inventure Design created a community health center for Harris Health System in a new storefront building. The project site had less square footage than the client’s typical pediatric and adolescent health centers, so an efficient and space-conscious design was necessary. Wayfinding
methods such as two-color coordinated treatment areas were utilized to make navigation in the space easier for patients. A bright and open design provided a playful area for patients to feel comfortable while also yielding an organized space for a successful staff workflow.

The new clinic for HMU is located on the second floor of the building, just at the top of the open staircase. The design compliments the building’s exterior and the existing clinics while integrating current finishes in the waiting area
of the new clinic. Trying to bring in as much natural light as possible to create an inviting space, the client positioned the waiting area, break room and nurses’ station along the building’s exterior.

LEBONHEUR CHILDREN’S HOSPITAL
Due to our award winning work at Texas Children’s and St. Jude’s Hospitals, we were interviewed and selected for this large healthcare project. Working very closely with the new CEO of the hospital, we were charged with creating a child-friendly atmosphere based on the principles of family-orineted care. The design was to be appropriate for children of all ages and provide interactive
distraction therapy to alleviate worry from patients and parents. Colorful materials brightened the hallways and public spaces. This design element continued into the clinics and patient rooms. At the hospital’s entrance, the great hall space was a collaboration with a local artist to create an animated sculpture that celebrates being a child in the two-storied atrium.

M.D. ANDERSON AMBULATORY CARE BUILDING
This project was the first facility for a satellite campus designed to provide patient focused, comprehensive cancer care. The building was designed to support intensive clinical trials, so researchers and clinicians were instrumental in the planning and design process
of the buildings. The design integrated healing gardens, waterfalls and other soothing environment additions. The project goal, to provide access to medical services within one comforting and appealing space, was achieved.

MEMORIAL HERMANN GREATER HEIGHTS
With noticeable changes in the surrounding community, Memorial Hermann Greater Heights led a hospital re-branding initiative that included new healthcare services and improved facility aesthetics.
The renovation of the Medical Surgery Patient Floors included nurse stations, waiting rooms, support areas and 55 patients rooms on two-floors. Inventure Design created a cohesive look that would be a part of the hospital’s brand while also providing an updated aesthetic for their
patients. The design complimented the hospital’s finish standards with new furniture and fresh art.
The result of the renovation was a lighter, brighter, more functional and healing environment for patients. The new look of the patient floors has elevated patient satisfaction through perceived cleanliness and improved patient-to-staff communication. The renovated spaces have received industry recognition and have improved the hospital’s outcome.

MEMORIAL HERMANN HEART & VASCULAR INSTITUTE
This cutting edge, refreshed version of their existing campus reflected the use of edgy technology while paying homage to the rich history of superior, personalized, patient-focused delivery of care. The environment was navigated with
wayfinding color blocks that guided the visitor effortlessly from check-in, waiting areas to points of care. These concepts were then scaled back in patient rooms, but still inform patients, staff and caregivers of the different zones.

MEMORIAL HERMANN KINGWOOD CCC
Memorial Hermann Health System wanted to expand to the Kingwood area in a two-story Convenient Care Center with access to adult and pediatric primary care and specialty physicians. For the space, the client required a first-class facility with an innovative design to provide high-quality, easily-accessible medical care to the Kingwood community. Inventure Design was brought on to provide interior design and furniture planning services that aligned with these goals.
The project was a build-out of a shell building including an emergency department, medical group, outpatient imaging, and a sports medicine suite. The design needed to promote a stress-free environment for patients. A key aspect of the interior design was to incorporate Kingwood’s motto of “the livable forest.” Therefore, many elements of nature were utilized. While creating this atmosphere, the design team had to adhere to Memorial Hermann’s finishing requirements, applying new and innovative elements while following existing standards.

Memorial Hermann utilized Inventure Design to help renovate the Emergency Department, Post-Anesthesia Care Unit, Day Surgery, and Pre-Assessment Area in their Northeast Campus in Humble, Texas. These areas needed a finish refresh in order to be consistent with the rest of the updated campus.
With Inventure Design’s knowledge of the facilities and prior work experience with Memorial Hermann finishes, the design team was able to provide cohesive design solutions to accomplish the goal of meeting Memorial Hermann’s corporate culture and branding standards.

The NMG headquarters in the Middle East required a space to showcase their healthcare design-build solutions as well as provide ample room for working as the company grows. The plan separates the public showroom, which allows NMG’s clients to experience the variety of product
options, and the private work area for the employees. There are both offices and open workstations, as well as a state-of-the-art conference room located in the center of the design that facilitates the constant use of video conferences with their US headquarters in Houston.

ST. JUDE CHILDREN’S HOSPITAL
We were challenged by Pediatrics to create interiors suitable for children of many age groups. Child development experts state the sea is an evocative image that remains throughout the stages of childhood. The entrance, waiting areas, diagnostic and treatment spaces used water imagery to
establish a soothing environment. Shades of blue, curved bubbly glass were features reminiscent of a waterfall. Aquariums and an enclosed stairwell that evoked a wishing well all contributed to this theme. The bright colors added a cheerful and positive tone that is appealing to children.

CHI ST. LUKE’S ICU WAITING ROOM
The project scope encompassed providing new furniture and finishes for the ICU Waiting Room. Because the room is utilized for long term waiting, the client requested a space that was segmented into areas for rest, refreshment

CHI ST. LUKE’S PHYSICIANS’ LOUNGE
This project required the conversion of an existing 430 sf shell space into a lounge area for the physicians of Baylor St. Luke’s Medical Center. The client requested that the room provide the physicians a space that offered a grab-and-go refreshment service, dining
area, workstations and sitting area. Through lighting and carefully selected furniture and finish elements, the space was transformed into a comfortable yet stylish lounge that offered the physicians a place of respite and refreshment.

SURGICAL ARTS CENTER CLEARLAKE
The project requirements were to combine a full-service Spa and Salon with a Rehabilitation Center, Physical Therapy Area and Health Club in a joint venture building that also housed a hospital and medical offices. The client requested a relaxing, unified space
that used as small a footprint as possible, leaving the greatest amount of space for the hospital and doctors’ offices. The design integrated two-floors and added an impressive sense of height and space, enhancing spa’s tranquility.

TEXAS CHILDREN’S HOSPITAL BEAUMONT
Inventure Design created a functional administrative office for Texas Children’s Hospital Health Plan. The new office was transformed into an effective space that followed branding guidelines while utilizing color accents to brighten the design.
The conference room with dry erase walls and video capabilities created a multifunctional space for meetings or collaborative teamwork. The signage above the reception desk, hand-painted by children, brought excitement to the space.

TEXAS CHILDREN’S HOSPITAL PAVILION FOR WOMEN
This 15-story women’s hospital featured four subterranean parking levels and expanded Texas Children’s Hospital to nearly five million sf. Having previously specialized in pediatric care, TCH desired a new model and platform that still reflected the overall campus style, but translated into a design for women’s services. Focusing on high risk pregnancies, TCH requested non-institutional, comfortable patient rooms to help their patients relax in a safe, spa-like environment. Our team incorporated warm woods, upgraded details and finishes, such as glass tile, quartz counters and sconces to achieve this design request.
A timeless, sleek and elegant design theme was implemented to easily transition the space through future renovations and
expansions to ensure the facility is always state-of-the-art. “Pattern with purpose” was also priority for TCH. Patterns in the flooring and ceiling provided wayfinding for patients while reflecting back to the overall campus design. Lighting elements in the space were designed as show pieces and considered the jewels of each public space. The constellation ceiling in the common meeting area added a whimsical element to the space while the reception piece boldly directed patients to the help desk.
This project also featured an elliptical, two-story pedestrian bridge that connects the pavilion with the Clinical Care Center and the West Tower.

THE CENTER
The Center in Houston, Texas is a facility dedicated to serving adults with developmental disabilities. The Center is a private, not-for-profit United Way Agency, so renovations to the space had to adhere to a strict budget. The updates to the reception area and classrooms enhanced the look and functionality, while adhering to ADA Standards. The design provided separation of spaces without using walls for the eating area, jukebox
area, media area, cyber and reading area and to promote resident interaction. Vibrant wall and floor coloring was installed to assist in wayfinding. Natural bamboo, a renewable and tactilely appealing material, was placed on the walls to act as corner guards. Finally, the removal and replacement of institutional lighting provided pleasant energy-efficient lighting to reduce client cost and resident eye strain.

THE UNIVERSITY OF TEXAS
This project required our firm to humanize the client’s services and practices into scalable, engaging and informing spaces. Modern, leading-edge care needed to be represented in the overall experience, while the dynamic practitioner interchange had to remain intact. Curvilinear forms guided the occupants through the
spaces in a subtle and intuitive wayfinding experience. Changes in texture, form and light informed you of critical information exchange points. Beautiful material selections, reflecting the campus architecture speak to the quality of the environment, while quieting it to a respectful and inviting space.

The principles of new urbanism created a vibrant economic engine for the facility, incorporating important elements of sustainability. The new, higher-density space incorporated urban plazas and healing gardens. Carefully placed
parking structures interfaced with regional transit facilities and the inter-campus tram reduced traffic congestion and improved accessibility. The design reduced the impact of the ecological footprint on the city of Dallas.
