What does doing a furtherdegree give you that a firstdegree doesn’t?The additional academicqualifications of a second degree isalways useful, but more importantthan that, I grew more confident inmy work, both theoretical andpractical and delivering that toothers through presentation anddiscussion also helped to boost myconfidence. It aso allowed me tosee what life would be like as aresearcher and helped me make mycareer decision, something I was farless sure about after completing myundergraduate degree.

What are you planning to donext?I am currently doing a PhD atQueen’s University, Belfast, lookingat using nanoparticles to treatcancer and, thanks to theconfidence my Master’s coursegave me, I am loving it.

Any advice for those thinkingabout taking this course? If cancer biology is your thingI cannot recommend the coursehighly enough. If you’re lookingfor a stepping stone fromundergraduate into full-timeresearch a taught Master’s isperfect. Or, if you love the subjectbut don’t want a career in the lab, again this course is for you.

James Nicol is studyingfor an MSc in CancerBiology.

What attracted you to thiscourse? What made you wantto go into this area of study?Cell biology has always interestedme, but to study in detail cells thathave altered their characteristicswith such variation and success,as you find in cancer, makes it allthe more interesting. With the addedmedical and clinical application ofcancer and its therapies, cancerbiology was an obvious choice.

Why did you choose to study atKent?Having taken my undergraduatedegree at Kent, I knew the staffrunning the cancer biology Master’sand knew them to be excellentteachers offering a good level ofsupport. Also, a chance to be on theCanterbury campus for another yearis always a bonus.

Which modules have youenjoyed most so far, and why?Targeted Cancer Therapies and theGenomic Stability and Cancer, whichexamines the use of DNA damagingagents in cancer therapies, weremodules of particular interest tome because of their industrialand clinical applications and the, sometimes, controversial discussionthey inspired. The four-monthresearch project was also a highlightand a great stepping stone into theworld of scientific research.

What about the teaching? The quality of the teaching and thesupport and passion with which thecourse content is delivered, reallykeeps you motivated in the subjectand keen to explore new avenues ofresearch.

How would you describe yourfellow students? As a small group of students fromdifferent backgrounds and areasof interest we mixed together well inseminars and later as small researchgroups in the laboratory; I am still incontact with most of the group, despite being at opposite endsof the country.

How does postgraduate studydiffer from undergraduate study? My favourite part of being apostgrad was having more say in thedirection of my work and how to getthere – whether it worked or not – Iwas able to make my own mistakesand learn from them. You also get toknow the members of staff far better, which adds a nice personal touch tolife around the School.

What skills do you think youhave gained that will help youto become more employable?Involvement in the postgraduateGlobal Skills Award and having todemonstrate practical skills forundergraduate students, myMaster’s has enhanced my CV farmore than academic qualificationsalone ever could.
