life skills to make you competitive within the global marketplace. It begins with the President’s Seminar on Life Skills and continues in more than 100 different ways throughout your four years at HPU.

At the age of 17, HPU President Dr. Nido Qubein, came to the U.S. with little money, no connections and a limited command of the English language. Dr. Qubein is a nationally recognized speaker, author and consultant.

His seminars prepare students for the world as it is going to be, which requires agile adaptability, a hunger to learn from multiple sources and insightful decisiveness. These are core attributes of future leaders, and HPU is committed to instilling those skills into the DNA of our students.

PREPARING FOR SUCCESSFUL CAREERS

“ Because of HPU’s location and proximity to downtown High Point, I’ve been able to build my résumé based on High Point Furniture Market positions (one with High Point Market Authority and most recently the showroom, Codarus) and with two internships: Barbour Spangle Design in High Point and June DeLugas Interiors in Clemmons, NC. Receiving a Bachelor of Science degree in Interior Design from a ‘Top 10’ design program was one of the most important factors in choosing which college to attend.” — Michelle Scirica; from

Ken Fobian was selected as the first place winner and recipient of $7,000 for his business plan, Resistance LLC, at HPU’s fifth annual Business Plan Competition. “I have that entrepreneurial passion and I have always wanted to start my own company,” says Fobian. “I am going to pursue the company upon graduating and it feels great that all of the hard work paid off. I am grateful for the help from everyone from HPU and the motivation from my friends and family. This is a huge help and a big step. I am very excited.” —Ken Fobian; from Oakland, NJ; Business major; Resistance, LLC

“ HPU helped me by providing unlimited opportunities and resources, both in and outside of the classroom. I always felt surrounded by HPU’s inspiring environment and was continuously motivated to succeed.” — Marissa Pierre; from

“ HPU exposed me to a breadth of opportunities, enabling me to further develop life skills that set me and other HPU students apart from the competition. The university realizes that we’re competing on a global platform, and it models values and behaviors that can’t be taught in a classroom.” —Alex Nelson; from Clayton, NC; Business Administration major; Edward Jones

“ High Point really does live up to its mission statement—an extraordinary education in an inspiring environment with caring people. I was able to pursue my dream of a double major in

Biology and Mathematics because of these three qualities. My professors constantly supported and challenged me inside and outside the classroom. The facilities and classrooms I had access to encouraged me to do my best and refine my skills. The URCW at HPU opened my eyes to a whole other world—one that I am now going into as I begin my future at a research intensive Ph.D. program at Vanderbilt University. Every dream, including mine, is feasible at HPU.” — Andrea Perreault; Biology and Mathematics major; from Neshanic Station, NJ; Pursuing a Ph.D. in Biomathematics at Vanderbilt University

“ I love it when my students experience the joy of discovery. In the classroom and in undergraduate research, they discover their passion; they discover their creativity; they uncover answers to scientific questions and they slowly unfold mysteries of the universe. Just like finding the prettiest shell on the seashore, they experience the pure joy of investigating.” —Dr. Aaron Titus, chair of the Physics Department. He is the recipient of HPU’s Professor of the Year and the Meredith Clark Slane Distinguished Teaching-Service Award.

“ I feel privileged to be a part of such an engaged community of learners — and that includes not only students, but faculty and staff as well. The opportunities for us to all learn from each other and grow are endless on the High Point University campus.” —Dr. Angela Bauer, chair of the Biology Department. Dr. Bauer has Bachelor of Arts degrees in Psychology and Neuroscience from Lawrence University in Wisconsin, a Ph.D. in Neuroscience from Northwestern University and she conducted postdoctoral studies at Harvard Medical School.

“ I love teaching at HPU because it affords the opportunity to reach out to young people in many ways and be a part of an extraordinary team of professors.” —Dr. Shirley Disseler, professor of Education and chairperson of the Global LEGO Education Advisory Panel’s (LEAP) Advisory Board. Disseler challenges HPU education majors to hold “LEGO Build Days” for local children. The HPU students go to nearby classrooms and host elementary students on campus for workshop builds to accelerate their learning experience.

“ The part of teaching that I cherish the most is the opportunity to see students grow intellectually and emotionally over time. With each new course, they become more inquisitive, adept at critical thinking, and passionate about affecting social change in the world of sports.” —Dr. Jenny Lukow, associate professor of Sport Management, Ph.D. from Indiana University

“ I remember what it was like to make that first scientific discovery — that feeling you get when you realize you might be the only person in the universe to know something. Being able to give my students similar opportunities is one of the most fulfilling parts of my job.” —Dr. Brad Barlow, assistant professor of Astrophysics, earned his Ph.D. in Physics (Astrophysics concentration) from the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill.

CHOOSE TOBE EXTRAORDINARY!®

Each year, a bald eagle soars across the crowd at the end of HPU’s Commencement to symbolize the ideals of free enterprise, independence and the ability to pursue new opportunities in America.

You are about to embark on an exciting and extraordinary chapter in life. The Office of Undergraduate Admissions would like to congratulate you on your achievements thus far.

Some of you are just starting the college-search process while others of you are on the brink of making a final decision; regardless of where you are in the process, please know that we are here to help!

The High Point University Undergraduate Admissions Application is accessible at highpoint.edu/apply, or via Common App at commonapp.org.

We offer three application plans for incoming freshmen:

EARLY DECISION is for those applicants who consider High Point University their number one college choice. It is a binding agreement in which, if admitted, you agree to withdraw all other college applications and enroll at High Point University. Early Decision students have first priority in housing selection and in class registration event sign-up.

EARLY ACTION is for those applicants who consider High Point University one of their top few college choices. It is a non-binding application plan. Early Action students have second priority in housing selection and in class registration event sign-up.

REGULAR DECISION is for those students not applying under one of our early application plans. Applications received under the Regular Decision plan will be reviewed after the first of the year. Applications received after the Regular Decision deadline will be reviewed on a space available basis.

View application submission deadlines and response notification information at highpoint.edu/admissions.

Dear Future HPU Student,

Choosing where you’ll attend college is a momentous decision. So many schools. So many tours. So many choices. On the surface many seem to look the same, but at High Point University we know what sets us apart. At High Point University, every student receives an extraordinary education in an inspiring environment with caring people.

At HPU, we are preparing students for the world as it’s going to be. Here’s what I tell both freshmen and seniors in the two Life Skills classes I teach annually on campus: There are no unrealistic dreams; only unrealistic timelines. Entrepreneur or journalist, teacher or accountant, athletic trainer or physicist, pharmacist or physical trainer, musician or interior designer, undecided or unsure, our inspiring academic environment will encourage you to dream big and to find solutions to global challenges.

We hope that you enjoy this view book, but please know that in order to fully understand High Point University’s extraordinary story, you must walk the grounds of our university, learn from our innovative and distinguished professors and meet the extraordinary students who call this place home.

We invite you to schedule your campus visit today and experience the ‘Extraordinary’ at High Point University.

We look forward to seeing you soon!

Dr. Nido Qubein ’70 President, High Point University [email protected]
