Camera Obscura to DSLR
Pinhole Camera• AKA Camera Obsucra• First pinhole camera
was invented around 1000AD by Alhazen.
• Images appear upside down
• The first successful photography was by Joseph Nicephore Niepce in 1826
Daguerrotype• Louis Jacques Mande
Daguerre used Niepce’s success to form the Daguerrotype in 1839.
• Used copper sheet coated in silver to create a black and white image.
• Very detailed and sharp images.
• One of a kind images.
Negatives• William Henry Fox
Talbot created the first negative.
• Sensitized paper with a silver salt solution.
• Perfected the process and called it a calotype.
Tintypes• 1856
• Hamilton Smith• Yielded a positive image
Wet Plate Negatives• 1851• Frederick Scoff Archer• Used a viscous solution
of collodion• Had to be developed in
the field
Dry Plate Negatives• 1879• Glass plate with dried
gelatin emulsion.• Could be stored• Absorbed light quickly
Flexible Roll Film• 1889-George Eastman• Emulsions coated a
cellulose nitrate film base
• Made mass produced box cameras possible
Color Photographs• Early 1940’s
• Modern Technology
Photographic Films• 35-mm• Medium-format– 6cm wide
• T-grain– Finer grain pattern– Great detail and
resolution
