Gird your loins and light your lamps and be like servants who await their master’s return from a wedding, ready to open immediately when he comes and knocks.

My friends the Gospel message of today sounds like the Advent message. I hope you all remember the song we sing in Advent season which contains the words “Stay awake! Be ready! It is a call for each one of us to remain vigilant for we do not know the hour when the Lord will come. My friends we should keep in mind two things here about the second coming of our Lord and the call to re-main vigilant. Firstly, is the call to remain vigilant for we do not know the hour of our death. Death comes unexpectedly to each one of us. Some people die in car accidents, unexpected killings, fires, and other unan-ticipated tragedies. Nobody knows the time. God has at the same time created in us the natural desire to live, and that is why some people on their deathbeds will still hope to get better and continue living. Death comes to us surprisingly like a thief. Secondly, nobody knows when the second coming of our Lord will happen. The call to remain vigilant is the call to remain steadfast in doing God’s will. It is the call to persevere in our faith and remain faithful and hopeful that the Lord will be merciful to us when the time comes. It is a call to remain resilient and consistent in giving witness to our faith even in difficult and turbulent times. To remain faithful is not easy without God’s grace. As the parable of the sower and the seed (Lk. 8: 5-15) tells us, it is easy to receive the Word with a generous heart and fall away in times of temptations and worldly allurements. We all are expected to bear fruits because of the word that has been planted in us since we were baptized. We pray that with God’s grace we may remain faithful and vigilant in doing God’s will until the hour of our death. In the Lord, Fr. Gosbert Rwezahura

FROM THE DINING ROOM TABLE OF DEACON MEL

It’s no secret that we live in a dark and scary world. The news is filled with stories about mass shootings, gang violence, drug use, legalized infanticide, political turmoil and all sorts of other painful reminders of the brokenness of our humanity. We are losing our way. The world is in desperate need of direction and heal-ing. The world needs Jesus Christ and Jesus needs us. In today’s gospel reading, Jesus tells us to “gird our loins and light our lamps.” In other words He is tell-ing us to roll up our sleeves and be prepared to do some hard work and to bring His light to a world that has become immersed in darkness. In the words of St. Teresa of Avila, “Christ has no body now on earth but yours. Yours are the eyes through which the compas-sion of Christ must look out on the world. Yours are the feet with which He is to go about doing good. Yours are the hands with which He is to bless His people.” Jesus is counting on us. Are we up to the challenge?

SPOTLIGHT ON: Esther Walenga Esther has been a parishioner of St. Jude the Apostle since mass was held in the barn. All 5 of her children received their sacraments and graduated from St. Jude School. Over the years Esther has been involved in several ministries. She is currently a member of the choir that sings at the 10:30 AM mass. Her favorite ministry is the prayer shawl group that she has been a part of since it began in 2015. She finds it very rewarding to use her knitting skills to knit a shawl and have it given to someone in need. Esther enjoys the friendship and camaraderie of the group that meets on the second Saturday of every month and looks forward to new members joining the group.
