USAC .25 GX120 Tech Manual 1 HONDA 120 – Tech Manual Updated November 2, 2012 FROM 2013 USAC NATIONAL .25 MIDGET RULE BOOK, APPENDIX I 731 Engine Protest Rules (applies to Honda and Briggs classes only) 1. Protest shall be from within the same division of class only, i.e. Jr., Sr., Lt.& Hvy. 120‐ 160, Animal or World Formula only. Competitors in the same division, and in the same race may make a protest on an engine. No protesting in Rookie Class. Handlers may not protest more than one car per event and may not protest same driver more than once per calendar year. 2. Honda Engines and World Formula/Animal Engines may be protested for $400.00 cash only plus any applicable shipping charges if necessary. No protested related inspection will be started prior to the funds being posted with the proper official. 3. This protest form and cash must be submitted to the Chief Steward, or his/her designee, before the end of the race that the protested engine is participating in I.E. Checkered flag lap complete. 4. The protest can only be made during an A‐Main event. 5. The person protesting the motor must have their engine inspected for compliance first. If the “protester’s” engine is found illegal the protest is null and void and the protest fee will go to the club. If the “protester’s” engine is found legal the protest will continue. 6. The Chief Steward, his/her designee, will hold the protest money until the protested engine has been inspected for legality. The protested engine shall be tagged/marked and sealed as soon as it car comes across the scale if it has not been sealed prior. 7. The protested engine as well as the engine of the protested party shall be immediately taken to impound and/or presented to the Tech Director for inspection. Engine must remain in impound and in the possession of tech officials throughout the entire process, including shipping to USAC Headquarters or designated tech inspection station and the transferring of funds. 8. Both protester and protestee have the option to be present at the time of inspection. 9. Any protest that is withdrawn will be assessed a $50.00 fee that will be paid to the host club. 10. If the protested engine is found to be illegal, the motor must be completely torn down to check for additional illegalities. The Tech Director must confiscate all illegal parts and related parts from the protested engine and shall immediately forward them to the USAC Headquarters. If engine is found illegal protest money minus $50 plus any shipping cost will be returned to the person filing the protest.

7. Theprotestedengineaswellastheengineoftheprotestedpartyshallbeimmediatelytakentoimpoundand/orpresentedtotheTechDirectorforinspection.Enginemustremaininimpoundandinthepossessionoftechofficialsthroughouttheentireprocess,includingshippingtoUSACHeadquartersordesignatedtechinspectionstationandthetransferringoffunds.

8. Bothprotesterandprotesteehavetheoptiontobepresentatthetimeofinspection.9. Anyprotestthatiswithdrawnwillbeassesseda$50.00feethatwillbepaidtothehost

club.10. Iftheprotestedengineisfoundtobeillegal,themotormustbecompletelytorndown

11. Refusalofprotest,destroyingorwithholdingofpartsoranyotherlackofcooperationinthisprotestorinspectionprocessshallbeinterpretedasanadmissionthattheengineisillegalandshallsubjectthedriverandhandlertotheconditionssetforthintheSuspensionsProgram.

12. Anytechedorprotestedengine,blockorpartwhicharedeemedtobeovermaximumwearlimitsinoneormorespotsbutisundermaximumwearlimitsinotherspotsissubjecttoconfiscationbutnotDQ’able.

13. Note:ReferencetoConfiscationduetoWearLimitsin“EngineBlockInternalRules”ofbothManuals.

14. Iftheengineisfoundlegal$400willbegiventothepersonwhoseenginewasprotested.

732EngineSuspensionRulesHandlersanddriversguiltyofhavinganenginedeclaredillegalattechnicalinspectionsshallbedisciplinedasfollows:

1. Firstoffense–upto30‐daysand/or4racesuspensionforhandleranddriverfromparticipatingintherespectiveclassatanyUSACSanctionedevent.

2. Secondoffensewithinoneyearoffirstinfraction–One‐yearsuspensionforhandleranddriverfromparticipatingintherespectiveclassatanyUSACSanctionedevent.

3. Thirdoffensewithintwoyearsoflastinfraction–SuspendedforlifefromUSAC’s.25Midgetdivision.

4. SuspensionforlifeisopentoreviewbyUSAC.5. Suspensionshallbeginimmediately.6. IllegalHonda,AnimalandWorldFormulapart/sshallbesentwithinfiveBusinessdays

totheUSACofficeordesigneeforreview.TheTechdirectorhas48hourstodetermineifthepart/sarelegalorillegal.Ifthepart/saredeterminedtobelegalitshallbereturnedtohandler.Handlershallbenotifiedifpart/sarelegalorillegal.Allillegalorconfiscatedpart/sshallbesenttoNationalTechDirector.Alllegalpartsshallbereturnedtohandler.

7. IfaHondamotorisfoundtohaveavalveoilsealduringtechitshallbearacedisqualificationonly.

8. Sparkplugsandexhaustinfractionsarearacedisqualificationonly.9. Failuretogototechand/orimpoundwillresultinaracedayDQ.

Refusaloftechshallbeinterpretedasanadmissionthattheengineisillegalandasuspensionfromtheclassshallbeimmediatewithallawardsandqualificationsbeingrevokedwithasix‐monthsuspensiondriverandhandlersuspensionatanyUSACSanctionedevent.

10. Forthepurposeofthisruleonly,ifahandlerhasmultiplecarscompetingatoneraceeventandmorethanoneengineisfoundtobeillegalatthatevent;itwillbeconsideredtobeoneoffense.

11. AllmembershipsuspensionsmustbesenttotheNationalTechDirectorwithin5BusinessDays.

12. IllegalRookieenginepartsshallbeconfiscated(HondaorAnimal)butthesuspensionshallnotbeleviedagainsthandlersordriversforthefirstoffense.Thesecondoffenseshallresultina30daysSuspensionfromRookie.

13. Thecosttoappealasuspensionis$175plusanyassociatedfees.Theappealmustbemadewithin3daysoftheruling.

1. “GX120UT2ENGINESWILLBEALLOWEDFORUSAC’S.252013SEASON.”2. OnlystockHondaGX120HX2Engineandgearboxwillbeusedinthisclass.Allpartswill

bestockHondaspecificallymadefortheHondaGX120K1HX2,U.S.GC01GCAHK,andCanadaGCAAT.HondaOEM120replacementblocksmaybeused.MustbeanOEMHondareplacementblock.Noaftermarketblocksorcomponents.

3. AllstockHondapartsmustbeusedandproperlyinstalledwiththefollowingexceptions:

a. Governorsystemmaybepartiallyorfullyremovedwiththeexceptionofthesteeldrivegearonthecrankshaft.Thisgearmustremainintact.Ifshaftisremovedholemustbeplugged.Holecanbetappedforthreadorepoxy.Nowelding.

b. Factoryaircleanermustberemoved.Anyairfiltermaybeattachedtotheoutsideofairfilteradapter.Outerwearstyleorequivalentcanbeusedovercarburetoronlywithnoadapter.Theapprovedairfilteradaptermayberunwithorwithoutanairfilter.Anyairfiltermaybeusedwithadapteraslongastherearenodevicesinsidetheairfilteroradapter.(I.E.Springsnotallowed)Hosefromvalvecovermustgointoacatchcan.(Weareusing“outerwear”todefineastylenotbrandname).

4. Theuseofairfiltersduringqualifyingatasphaltanddirteventsisillegal.TheSeniorTech.Officialreservestherighttoallowfiltersatanyeventthatit’sdeemednecessary.

5. Anytypeofthrottlelinkagemaybeutilized.Carburetorshallremainunalteredwiththeexceptionoftheblackplasticpieceontheupperendofthethrottleshaft.ThisistheONLYpartofthecarburetorthatmaybealtered,removedofmaterialfromtheblackplasticpieceisallowed.Noadditionalmaterialmaybeaddedtothecarburetor.i.e.boltinblackplasticpieceortubingonthrottlestop.

6. StockHondafueltankmustberemoved.7. Recoilstartermustberemoved.Pullcupmaybecutdownforwasher.Mustuseoriginal

cup.8. Exhaust:

a. StockHondamufflerwillberemoved.Mountingflangemaybecutoffofmufflerandusedasadapterflange.Anytransitionfromthe“D”shapeoftheexhaustporttoroundmusttakeplacewithinthethickness(0.250”max).oftheflange.Thisappliestoallexhaustsystems.Nostepsortapersallowed,gridmarksareallowedpast.25”flangearea.Nosuspensionforexhaustflangeorpipe

infractionjustdisqualification.Ifanaftermarketflangeisused,maximumallowableflangethicknesswillbe0.250”.Ifslipontypeflangeassemblyisused,pipestubwillbeamaximum0.880“outsidediametertubingwithamaximumoveralllengthof1.500”.Pipestubmustbeinsertedintoexhaustpipeatleast0.750”andwillhaveminimalexhaustleakage.

b. AllUSAC.25midgetmufflerstobeusedwillbe4to8hpBriggs&Stratton,partnumber294599orequalequivalent.Mufflerwillbeinternallyunalteredexceptthattheroundcupshapedbafflemaybeweldedtotheperforatedbafflewithoutmovingit’soriginallocation.Nodrillingholesinthebaffles.Insideseamofbafflemustbestraightedged.(NOTE:Someseamsmaynotbestraight).Threadswillnotberemovedfromthemuffler.Itisoktoweldawasherornutontheflangeforaplacetoapplysafetywireand/orspring.

c. Exhaustpipewillbeamaximumof1.000”outsidediameterwithalengthof20.0”to26.0”includingathreadedpipecouplerweldedtotheendofthepipeinordertoscrewmufflerinplacesothatmufflermayberemovedforinspection.Pipecouplerwillbeastandard,unaltered,¾”NP,threadedcoupler.Lengthwillbe1.000”minimumto2.250”maximum.Exhaustpipelengthwillbemeasuredbyusingasmalldiameterhoseinsertedthoughpipetomeasureoveralllength.Flangeandcouplerwillbeincludedintheoveralllengthwhenmeasuringpipe.Nocoatingofanytypemaybeappliedtotheinteriorofanypartoftheexhaustsystem.Theintentofthisruleistohavealloftheexhaustpassthroughthemuffler.Allmeasurementsaretobetakenwiththecomponentpiecesinthesamepositionastheywereinstalledandonthecar.

9. Chokebutterflyandshaftmustberemoved.Onlythetopholemaybefilledonlywithsiliconeoroldshaftcutdown.Noadditionorsubtractionofmaterialintheboreorventuriofthecarburetor.

10. Oillevelswitchmaybedisconnectedbutswitchassemblymustremainintactincrankcase.

11. Gearboxmayberotatedtoanydesiredposition.12. MainJetincarburetorwillbe“NONTech”.MustbeaOEMHondaJet(brassorsilver

jet).Jetcanbedrilledtoanysize.Nomodificationstothejetexceptfordrillingthemainhole.

13. On‐Offignitionswitchmayberemoved,andholecovered.(anymaterial:nowelding)14. Allpinmeasuringgaugesareplustolerance.15. ExhaustoxygensensorortemperaturesensorattachedtoanypartofHondaexhaust

TECHPROCEDUREModificationsormachiningofanypartsexceptthegasketsurfacesbetweenthecylinderheadandblock,andmainjetinordertobringthemtostatedminimumormaximumspecs(blueprinting)isnotlegal.

1. Externalvisualcheckofengineforrequiredcomponents:Pipeandmuffler,shroudsandsheetmetal,andoillevelsensor(thiscanbepartiallyobservedfromoutside).

2. Factoryaircleanermustberemoved.Anyairfiltermaybeattachedtotheoutsideofairfilteradapter.Outerwearstyleorequivalentcanbeusedovercarburetoronlywithnoadapter.Theapprovedairfilteradaptermayberunwithorwithoutanairfilter.Anyairfiltermaybeusedwithadapteraslongastherearenodevice(s)usedinsidetheairfilteroradapter.(I.E.Springsnotallowed)hosefromvalvecovermustgointoacatchcan.(Weareusing“outerwear”todefineastylenotbrandname).

theflatwasherbackpiecethatretainscoolingfan.7. Theykeyedendoftheringgearshaftmaybeshortened,drilledandtappedormachined

forsnapring.8. Heli‐coilingthreadsforshrouds(all),valvecover,existingthrottlemountingholes,oil

drain,andfillholes,oneofthecoilbolts,andsidecoverboltsisallowed.Dowelholesarenottobemodifiedorrelocated,alsoonecarburetormountingbolt.
