WHAT IS ERGONOMICS?Ergonomics is science concerned with the understanding of human work style and other aspects such as work pressure, physical anxiety and environmental factors which can have an effect on work. The study is used to design work environment in such a way that employee’s health, comfort, performance and satisfaction is taken into account. It adopts contributions from various science fi elds such as psychology, engineering, biomechanics, industrial design, physiology and anthropometry.

Telematics in EVs is slowly but progressively moving from M2M (Machine-to-Machine) to V2V (Vehicle-to-vehicle) and V2X (Vehicle-to-infrastructure) connectivity. V2V and V2X will play a crucial role to allow for a safer, more efficient and comfortable driving in the future.

The use of telematics for remote diagnostics is a first-of-its-kind in India and only a handful of cars in the world can do this, including the Mahindra e2o. It is connected via a Vodafone GSM module to servers (current operating system based on Windows Linux platform), for predictive maintenance and remote charging of the car. Data received through telematics for all cars (monitored for kilometers driven, range and fuel saved) is shared with customers. Remember the movies where actors like Tom Cruise could avert a crime with the help of a ‘Minority Report’ generated by advanced telematics? Today, several applications of telematics have been cross-fertilized across industries like Aerospace, Marine, Military, Information technology, Engineering, Automotive and so on. In the Automotive industry, after-factory boxes and RFID tags are used to collect and transmit data on vehicle use, maintenance requirements and servicing. Now technical teams across the world have developed specific telematics that encompasses the use of wireless devices, telecommunications, vehicular technologies, road transportation, road safety and computer science.
Worldwide, EVs are in an embryonic stage of M2M connectivity and telemetry. Through existing applications, EV manufacturers are not just identifying faults remotely and arriving with the right battery modules, tools and protective gear but are also able to reduce the time to corrective action. Most of the existing telematics services have been dependently developed and provided on specific systems of a single mobile network.
The principal focus as of today is on telematics solutions that alleviate the range anxiety by providing drivers with information on the range of their vehicles and location of the nearest charging stations. However, emphasis will increasingly shift towards more sophisticated infotainment solutions such as live traffic update, weather, streaming content and cloud-based applications.

state of charge, remotely activate additional battery charge, provide information on the nearest charging stations, lock/ unlock the car, pre-cool the car and set it on vacation mode. In August 2013, a customer in Beawar (Rajasthan) was unable to charge his e2o. Through Telematics, the root cause was quickly detected by the CCC team. The e2o was reprogrammed over-the-air to work with the grid supply at the location and the issue was resolved remotely. Telematics played a key role in diagnosing as well as rectifying the problem remotely.

Within the company, the use of telemetry data has been widespread as: (1) An impetus to the R&D team towards continued product
development. (2) A support to the CCC team in keeping up with high
standards of customer service. (3) A tool to allow for low to nil after-sales servicing costs (in
comparison to service bills of Rs. 10000 and above of conventional cars).
We will be pushing the envelope of technology with future products being based on end-to-end telematics. On the consumer side, the car would be rich on connectivity and computer science (multimedia, internet, infotainment system and driver assistance systems). On the enterprise side, diagnostics will be offered with data being collected on the cloud and an advance assessment of the driving behaviour of our customers would be easier.
