can result in damage to or destruction of equipment Note concerns an operating procedure or practice that needs highlighting The Hose Reel System is manufactured to provide a means of safely lifting and lowering a submersible sea water pump and hose to provide water to the vessels main ballast and fire water tanks. It utilizes high pressure hydraulic fluid power which can cause the reel to move suddenly and with great force if it is not properly rigged up and operated. The Hose Reel contains rotating and reciprocating parts which can severely or fatally injure personnel who are operating, repairing, or near this equipment during its operation. WARNING: Hose Reels are not to be operated by untrained personnel or personnel with diminished physical or mental capacity. No maintenance work of any type is to be carried out while the reel is connected to any hydraulic power unit. The Hose Reel is a heavy tool. It must be handled using appropriate equipment and methods. WARNING: Users must insure the entire lifting system including cables, rig mounting points, lift cylinders, winches, pulleys, counter weights, etc., are in good condition and capable of handling the static weight of hose reel. WARNING: Users must provide a means of safely controlling the Hose Reel System movements in all directions when it is in use. Failure to account for its size, weight and movement could result in personnel injury or death. The Hose Reel System utilizes high pressure hydraulic fluids. Portions of the Hose Reel, control valves, hydraulic lines and cylinders may contain high pressure fluid even when the power unit is de-energized and the fluid supply hoses are disconnected. During normal operation the temperature of the hydraulic fluids as well as hoses, piping, valves, etc., can rise to a level which can cause burns. WARNING: Personal protective gear including safety glasses, face shields, protective gloves and protective clothing must be worn to guard against the hazards of high pressure fluids. Tight fitting clothing is required to prevent entanglement in rotating components. These tools should be serviced by thoroughly trained and qualified hydraulic technicians using procedures to safely insure hydraulic pressure is bled from these circuits.

No attempt should be made to operate the Hose Reel System for any purpose other than which it is intended. This system is capable of generating high torques and line pulls which, if improperly applied or controlled, could result in damage to the reels, or could possibly result in injury or death of personnel.

HYDRAULIC PRODUCT SAFETY

VALVE SAFETY: Read and follow instructions carefully. Failure to observe instructionsand guidelines may cause serious injury, death or equipment failure. A sticking valve(spool bind) may be caused by one or more of the following factors:DIRTY OIL: Oil must be filtered to a minimum of 25 microns. Filters should be changed regularly -spin-on types after 50 hours of initial use and then after every two hundred fifty hours of use. Use ofa condition indicator is recommended. Consult your tractor or implement owner’s manual for filtra-tion and changing recommendations for internal systems.OIL REQUIREMENTS: Premium quality anti-wear type oil with a viscosity between 100 and 200SSU at operating temperatures. Certain synthetic oils may cause spool seals to swell and the valveto stick. If in doubt, call CROSS Engineering.IMPROPER HOOK UP OR MOUNTING: Always use the proper size fittings. Hook up "in" & "out"as noted on the valve body. Do not overtorque pipe fittings. Mounting surfaces should be flat andcare should be used when tightening mounting bolts. Over-tightened bolts can cause spool bindand casting breakage. When hooking a valve in series, always use a power beyond sleeve. Con-sult your tractor or implement manual to make sure you have the proper quick disconnect lineconnected to the inlet of the remote valve.MISAPPLICATION: Always use the proper valve for the job. CONVERTA, CD, CS or CA valvesshould never be used for metered heavy load lifting - loaders or similar applications. Use an opencenter valve for open center applications and a closed center valve for closed applications. If indoubt, check with your tractor dealer. Contact CROSS if the valve allows the hydraulic equipment tocreep excessively.MAINTENANCE: Make sure all bolts are tightened and torqued to the recommended specification. Bent or broken parts should not be used. Replace immediately. Always use exact replacements. Always protect valve spool from paint overspray.Faulty quick disconnects can cause high back pressures and sticking spools. Check quick discon-nects periodically to make sure they are functioning properly. If valve spool does not center orappears to stick, do not use!

PUMPS & MOTORS SAFETY:A relief or bypass in your hydraulic system is necessary to prevent pump from breakage due tooverpressurization. Use correct fittings and proper oil as noted in the technical service manualpacked with each unit. Change oil as recommended by your implement or tractor manufacturer.

CYLINDER SAFETY:Check clevis clearances before, during and after extending the cylinder and before using the cylinderunder pressure to avoid possible injury, or bent or broken rods caused by binding. Never operatea cylinder above recommended pressures. Never use a cylinder as a safety device when trans-porting equipment.

PINHOLE LEAKS:If you observe a pinhole leak, discontinue use of the component. If oil has penetrated your skin orcontacted your eye, seek medical attention immediately!

GENERAL DESCRIPTION and APPLICATION


The Hose Reel System is designed to raise and lower an electric overboard seawater pump to supply the rigs ballast and fire main piping. Connected to the overboard pump is a 6" water hose, 1" electrical cable, and 1/2" stainless steel lifting cable. The pump is lifted and lowered using the main hose reel. The system consists of four major components listed below:

1. HOSE REEL 2. ELECTRICAL REEL 3. STAINLESS STEEL CABLE REEL 4. CONTROL CONSOLE / HYDRAULIC POWER UNIT

The Hose Reel is used to store 150 feet of 6" water hose. It is capable of 6500 pounds line pull bare drum, 4500 pounds line pull full drum (at 2500 PSI). The Electrical Reel is used to store 150 feet of 1" electrical cable. It is capable of 300 pounds line pull bare drum (at 2500 PSI). The Stainless Steel Cable Reel will store in excess of 150" of 1/2" stainless steel cable. It is capable of 300 pounds line pull bare drum (at 2500 PSI). The Hydraulic Power Unit is a 15 HP electric driven unit. Power requirements is 480 VAC, 3PH, 60 Hz. The Unit can deliver 9 GPM at 2500 PSI from the hydraulic pump. The Control Console contains the four-section directional control valve, pressure (tension) adjustment valves, pressure gauges, and other control valves. It controls all functions for all reels (see Hydraulic Schematic Illustrations for a complete hydraulic schematic). The Control Console has provision for operating one reel system. Each of the three reels on each system may be operated independently via its corresponding lever control valve (levers 1-3). Independent operation may be necessary when loading or unloading cable, hose, etc. During normal operation, the seawater pump should be raised and lowered with all three reels operating simultaneously (lever 4). The main hose reel does the actual lifting and lowering, while the stainless steel cable reel and electrical reel are put into a constant tension mode. This keeps the stainless steel cable and electrical cable taut while the pump is being raised or lowered. The amount of tension on each reel can be adjusted by using the tension adjustment valve.

ASSEMBLY INSTRUCTIONS


FASTENER LUBRICATION AND MAKE UP TORQUE REQUIREMENTS Most bolts, nuts, and other threaded components are to be lubricated with Never-Seez or equivalent before assembly. Certain fasteners are to be assembled using permanent or removable Loctite as indicated in the assembly illustrations. All tapered pipe threads are to be treated with a Teflon based pipe dope to assist in makeup and prevent leakage. CAUTION: Do not use teflon tape. Improper application of teflon tape can cause joint failures. Teflon tape can release large particles which can plug small passages in hydraulic equipment. All standard fasteners used in CLINCHER products are to be GRADE 8 or better. DO NOT SUBSTITUTE lesser grades of fasteners. All fasteners are to be made up to the torque charted below. Failure to properly assemble these fasteners can result in their loss, product malfunction, and ultimately result in situations where personnel can be exposed to dangerous situations.

Superior recommends using Texaco Marfak MP 2 or equivalent for all grease zerts, roller bearings, and bushings. Fill Planetary Gearbox to half full with 90 weight gear lube with EP additive (150 oz, 4.68 quarts).

OPERATIONAL INSTRUCTIONS


STARTUP AND COMMISSIONING Startup and commissioning of the hose reel system involves a few basic steps. Each hose reel system has undergone a full factory test of all functions. All relief valves are preset by the factory, and should not need to be adjusted during initial startup. First, verify the reservoir is filled with the proper amount and type of fluid (60 US Gallons, Chevron Clarity ISO 46 or equal). Remove all locking pins and latches from the three reels. Next verify the correct rotation of the electric motor by “bumping” the motor using the start/ stop switches on the front of the motor starter. If rotation is incorrect, have qualified personnel correct the electrical motor leads in the motor starter. WARNING - Remember to use lockout/tagout when working with electrical equipment. Once correct rotation has been established, start the hydraulic power unit (HPU), and allow the system to circulate for 3-5 minutes. Check for any leaks. Should leaks occur, shut down the unit, tighten fittings or repair leak, and restart HPU. Verify rotation in each direction of each reel independently using levers 1 through 3 of the control valve. Verify synchronous operation using lever 4 of the control valve. Note that during synchronous operation, the stainless steel cable reel and the electrical reel will always try to pay in, regardless if the hose reel is being paid in or out. Also note that if the reels have no applied load, not all reels may turn during synchronous operation. NORMAL OPERATION The HPU can be started and stopped using the pushbuttons on the front of the motor starter. CAUTION – Remove all locking pins from reels before lifting or lowering hose/ pump. Failure to remove the locking pin from electrical reel while attempting to lower the pump can cause damage to the electrical cable. CAUTION – Be sure that the electrical connector on the side of the electrical cable reel is disconnected prior to lifting or lowering the hose/pump. Failure to disconnect the connector will cause severe damage to the connector or electrical cable. Each reel can be independently controlled using its corresponding lever on the control console. Pay In (lift) and Pay Out (lower) directions are clearly marked for each of the three reels. Independent control can be used when loading the reels with hose/cable. It may also be useful to equalize the hose/cable in the event that they are “out of sync”.



The hose/pump can be lifted/lowered in the “Synchro” mode using the fourth lever on the control valve. While using the Synchro lever, the stainless steel cable reel and the electrical reel will always try to pay in, regardless if the hose reel is being paid in or out. The stainless steel cable reel and the electrical reel each provide a constant tension in the pay in direction. The amount of tension can be adjusted by using the tension control valve located on the control console (approximately 0-300 lbs tension per reel). A pressure gauge indicates the maximum pressure to each of the two reels in tension. Note that the tension may have to be increased as the amount of hose/cable paid out increases. There are several safety devices used in the hose reel system. First, manual locking pins are used on each reel to prevent unwanted rotation of the reels during shipping and between uses. The main hose reel uses a fail-safe, spring applied, hydraulic release brake to hold the hose reel from rotating. The brake is automatically released when using any of the four control levers on the control console, and set when the levers are returned to neutral. Also, a counterbalance valve, or load holding valve, is used on the main hose reel to provide smooth lowering of the hose/pump, and prevent freefalling or runaway loads. CAUTION – Remove all locking pins from reels before lifting or lowering hose/pump. Failure to remove the locking pin from electrical reel while attempting to lower the pump can cause damage to the electrical cable. CAUTION – Be sure that the electrical connector on the side of the electrical cable reel is disconnected prior to lifting or lowering the hose/pump. Failure to disconnect the connector will cause severe damage to the connector or electrical cable. EMERGENCY LOWERING OF THE HOSE/PUMP In the event of a total hydraulic failure, the hose/pump can be manually lowered into the water. First, be sure to remove all locking pins from reels before lifting or lowering hose/pump. Next, position the brake release selector ball valve towards the emergency hand pump. Pump the emergency hand pump several times to manually release the fail-safe brake. Lastly, slowly turn in the adjustment (clockwise) on the counterbalance valve to override it. This will provide a smooth lowering of the hose/pump into the water. To stop the hose/pump, turn out the adjustment (counter clockwise) on the counterbalance valve, or release the pressure on the emergency hand pump to set the fail-safe brake.



EMERGENCY OPERATION FROM THE SECONDARY HPU In the event of a hydraulic power unit (HPU) failure, the failed hose reel system can be configured to run from a secondary working hose reel system. This requires the user to interconnect the HPU’s using two hoses and position 4 ball valves. 1. Connect the “Pressure Out” on the working HPU to the “Pressure In” on the failed HPU

using a 1/2" hose. 2. Connect the “Return In” on the working HPU to the “Return Out” on the failed HPU

using a 3/4" hose. 3. On the working HPU, position the RED “Pressure Selector Valve” to “Auxiliary”, and

position the YELLOW “Return Selector Valve” to “Normal”. 4. On the failed HPU, position the RED “Pressure Selector Valve” to “Auxiliary”, and

position the YELLOW “Return Selector Valve” to “Auxiliary”.

CAUTION: Failure to correctly position selector valves during emergency operation may cause equipment failure or overfilling of hydraulic reservoirs.

5. Recheck for correct hose interconnection, and selector valve placement before operation. 6. Start the working HPU, and operate the failed hose reel system from its own control

panel as normal. Note that the working HPU’s control console will be inactive during emergency operation of a failed hose reel system.

7. After use, disconnect all hoses, and return all selector valves to the “Normal” position for

normal operation.

MAINTENANCE INSTRUCTIONS


Superior recommends that owners of Hose Reels and accessories adapt a regularly scheduled maintenance program. Implementation of this type of program offers several benefits. First you increase the life of your equipment, secondly, you may find a problem before it escalates to a costly repair or down time on the job, and most importantly, prevent injury to operating personnel. A major inspection should be carried out if equipment is suspected to have been damaged during transit or is to be mobilized to a remote location where maintenance operations are difficult to carry out. Routine Maintenance Cleaning: A) Pre-wash unit to remove majority of dirt and grease build up as to allow inspection of overall

condition of unit. B) Clean and inspect for damage or excessive wear (cracks, breakage, and uneven wear

patterns). C) Inspect all hoses for wear, replace as necessary. D) Lubricate zerts on reels and bearings. E) While maintaining pressure visually inspect hoses, stainless steel lines, fittings, etc., for

seepage of hydraulic fluid. Repair or replace parts causing leaks. If you see no visible external leaks and you are still losing pressure, there may be an internal leak in the load holding valve. It is recommended that the unit be returned to the manufacturer for repair.

F) Test. Re-inspect hydraulic system for leaks. G) Replace return filter elements every 6 months or as required. H) Sample oil for contamination every 6 months, replace as required.

TROUBLESHOOTING


HYDRAULIC SYSTEM

Hydraulic Pump Making Excessive Noise:

Problem Solution

A) Restricted or clogged intake line Clean line, check for contamination.

B) Contaminated fluid Flush system, change fluid.

C) Restricted vent Clean or replace air vent.

D) Air in fluid Check for leaks and be certain fluid suction in tank is well below hydraulic fluid in reservoir.

E) Damaged or worn parts Repair or replace damaged parts, check fluid for contamination.

F) Excessive RPM Check PTO, gears, and recommended speed to assure proper pump is installed for operation.

G) Increased friction Make sure pump has been assembled using correct torque valves.

H) Damaged or worn relief valve. Replace relief valve.

I) Damaged or worn check valve. Replace check valve.

J) Restricted discharge Check to make sure relief valve is set to proper pressure.

K) Valve system restricted Inspect and repair or replace defective parts, check system for contamination.

Excessive Wear to Hydraulic Components:
