How do you attract/address the

audience

Title

It is very important the name shows everyone what type of magazine it is. After researching I decided to call my magazine ‘Modernist’. This is because the subculture Mod developed from London-based stylish young men in the late 1950s who were called modernists because they listened to modern jazz. Mods will spot this name as it has a relation to them and this will attract them to the magazine. Modernist also means a believer in or supporter of modernism, especially in the arts. So it also shows that this magazine is looking for a modern audience who enjoys supporting new forms of art, in this case up-and-coming mod bands.

I think one of the first things that attracts in the reader is the logo. I wanted to design something which would signpost this is as a mod magazine straight away. I took inspiration from the mod target which is seen on almost every mod product. I updated it with modern colours of burgundy, mint and cream to attract the younger audience of 20-25 years old who were interested in mod. The new colours will show the reader that this magazine is promoting modern mod bands as well as the older ones. I also added the name of the magazine into the logo in a bold font. I placed in diagonally across the logo at a angle which Vespa use on their logo. This is because mods are known to ride around on scooters and this was a connation of this. The font also included an arrow because these were used commonly used on mod contents, such as band’s artwork like The Who. Mod fans would recognise this and therefore this would attract them to the magazine.

Logo

Slogan

I decided to use this as my slogan because this is saying commonly used with Mods. People who relate to this saying are true mods and these are the people who I want to read my magazine. They will instantly relate to this saying and know it is a mod magazine, this will attract them to my magazine.

Written language and elements

Modernist have a on-going feature in the magazine where they introduce a new mod band. This feature is called “Absolute beginners” with the word “beginner” connecting to the fact they are a new band. I also called it this because “Absolute beginners” is a book based just before the mod culture started in 1958. Many mods will be familiar with this novel causing them to be drawn into my magazine.

The name of the band featuring in this magazine are called “Painted Faces”. This name is very similar to famous mod band “The small faces”, this shows they have a similar style. Having this on my cover is again showing it is a mod music magazine therefore mods will be attracted to it.

Brighton Weekender is a famous event in the mod calendar every year. Many of my target market will attend or want to, therefore having a feature including it will attract them in to read it. Persuading them to buy my magazine.

Including a “@” on the magazine cover again shows to the target magazine it is a modern magazine because this sign has connections to social networks which are commonly used by my target market.I also kept including

arrows in the fonts to again broadcast clearly it is a mod magazine.

I included “The Rifles” because there name is very similar to many mod bands which two a word name beginning with “The”. The Who, The Jam…

Quadrophenia is a famous mod film about the subculture in its prime in the 60’s. Every mod would of watched it, therefore putting in the cover which attract the mods. It also signposts this is mod music magazine. Its also a feature on my contents as it will be a big feature which many readers will want to read about.

Two features which are listed on my content page are related to northern soul. This is because many mods will also have a taste for northern soul music and therefore will be interested in reading more about it. This is another way to attract mods to buy my magazine. Also people who are more northern soul fans may be attracted to buy the magazine, this could cause them to grow a bigger interest mod and therefore they become regular buyers.

Similar to northern soul, Ska music is also a popular music style to mod. Many people who like ska will like mod therefore this will encourage them to buy the magazine. This is producing customers outside my target market.

I included this feature on places to go because during my target market research I discovered my young audience love to hang out in places such as cool bars and coffee shops. As they are always interested in finding new places to go they will enjoy the feature where the Modernist recommend them new unique places.

Here in the main image on this page a guitar is obviously placed as a prop. This indicates to anyone it is musically based article, drawing in any type of music fan.

Levis are famously wore by mods therefore having it in a large quote on the page will grab mods attention and draw them in. This could cause them to buy the magazine and then encourage to read this feature.

I think this quote will really attract the audience of mods who love music. They also believe that they are connected because of music and because they are agreeing with Painted Faces views will make them have something in common with them, creating a bond. This bond will make them want to buy the magazine and read this article.
