Pronunciation Problems for English Learners (1)

Unable to produce specific sounds.

● Specific problems in your niche.

● /t/ and /d/ for Spanish speakers.● Vowels.● /r/ and /l/ sounds for Chinese speakers.



Pronunciation Problems for English Learners (2)

Lack of exposure, practice, and evaluation

● Most traditional lessons, but especially group lessons.

● Difficult to evaluate everyone during the lesson.

● Some students are shy in the classroom.

● Homework usually focuses on reading and writing, and listening and speaking aren’t practiced.


How We Can Solve These Problems

More General Exposure, Practice and Feedback

● Include pronunciation in every lesson.● Resources for outside the class.● Evaluate our students in private.

Example Using Phrasal Verbs (sort out, bring up put up with)

● Go through the traditional teaching methods.

● Normal to give written homework or exercises.

● Instead of doing this, bring in linking and extra practice at home.


More Exposure and Practice at Home (2)Using Audacity, Dropbox, and Email

Record different phrases:○ We’ve run out of it.○ Don’t bring it up again.○ I’ve had to put up with it for too long.

Make them available through Dropbox.

Send an email with the link to the students to download.

● My Russian students struggle with this tense.

● Have problems with intonation and linking.

● Used the film Taken as an example of the first conditional.

“If you let my daughter go now, that’ll be the end of it. I will not look for you, I will not pursue you. But if you don’t, I will look for you, I will find you, and I will kill you.”


Using Email to Bring Everything Together

Can use regular email but an email service provider is better:

● Can send homework and resources before or after the lessons.

● Can send this automatically on a schedule.

● Reminders about homework and lessons.

● Build your own list for the future.
