The Fifth Sunday After Epiphany

PRELUDE

Talk to God about your week.

Invite the Holy Spirit to be with you.

Confess anything you’d like forgiveness for.

(If you’re not sure how to do this, ask God for help.

Then relax and go with what you’ve got.

You’ll get better with practice.)

WELCOME

P The peace of the Lord be with you all.

C And also with you.

P Jesus Christ was given to die for you, and for his sake God forgives you all your sins.

To those who believe in Jesus Christ, God gives the power to become the children of

God and bestows on them the Holy Spirit.

C Amen.

A For the peace of the whole world, for the well-being of the Church of God, and

for the unity of all, let us pray to the Lord.

C Lord, have mercy.

A For this holy house, and for all who offer here their worship and praise, let

us pray to the Lord.

PRAYER OF THE DAY

God, help us to do what would be best, even when it doesn’t make sense to us.

Thank you. Amen.

FIRST LESSON Isaiah 6:1-3 NRSV

In the year that King Uzziah died, I saw the Lord sitting on a throne, high and lofty; and the hem of his robe filled the temple. Seraphs were in attendance above him; each had six wings: with two they covered their faces, and with two they covered their feet, and with two they flew. And one called to another and said:

“Holy, holy, holy is the Lord of hosts; the whole earth is full of his glory.”

RESPONSIVE READING Psalm 138:6-8 NRSV

A Though the Lord is high, he regards the lowly; but the haughty he perceives from far away.

C Though I walk in the midst of trouble,

you preserve me against the wrath of my enemies; you stretch out your hand, and your right hand delivers me.

A The Lord will fulfill his purpose for me; your steadfast love, O Lord, endures forever. Do not forsake the work of your hands.

GOSPEL Luke 5:1-5 NRSV

Once while Jesus was standing beside the lake of Gennesaret, and the crowd was pressing in on him to hear the word of God, he saw two boats there at the shore of the lake; the fishermen had gone out of them and were washing their nets. He got into one of the boats,

the one belonging to Simon, and asked him to put out a little way from the shore. Then he sat down and taught the crowds from the boat. When he had finished speaking, he said to Simon, “Put out into the deep water and let down your nets for a catch.” Simon answered, “Master, we have worked all night long but have caught nothing. Yet if you say so, I will let down the nets.”

SECOND LESSON 1 Corinthians 14:12b-19 NRSV

Since you are eager for spiritual gifts, strive to excel in them for building up the church. Therefore, one who speaks in a tongue should pray for the power to interpret. For if I pray in a tongue, my spirit prays but my mind is unproductive. What should I do then? I will pray with the spirit, but I will pray with the mind also; I will sing praise with the spirit, but I will sing praise with the mind also. Otherwise, if you say a blessing with the spirit, how can anyone in the position of an outsider say the “Amen” to your thanksgiving, since the outsider does not know what you are saying? For you may give thanks well enough, but the other person is not built up. I thank God that I speak in tongues more than all of you; nevertheless, in church I would rather speak five words with my mind, in order to instruct others also, than ten thousand words in a tongue.

Please rise for the gospel

THE LORD’S PRAYER

C Our Father in heaven,

hallowed be your name.

Your kingdom come,

your will be done,

on earth as in heaven.

Give us today our daily bread.

Forgive us our sins

as we forgive those who sin against us.

Save us from the time of trial

and deliver us from evil

For the kingdom, the power, and the

glory are yours, now and forever. Amen.

OFFERING During the offering, members give a percentage of their income in thanks to God. Malachi encourages people to test God by giving ten percent of their income, with the promise that God will pour down an overflowing blessing when they do. You can read this great promise in Malachi 3:10-12. At La Jolla Lutheran, some people are far more generous than what Malachi encourages. Others give smaller amounts. We appreciate the generosity of all who contribute to advance God’s kingdom in the world. Visitors are welcome to participate in the offering if they wish. If you would like to give by credit card, you can find a yellow Donate button at the bottom of our website, LaJollaLutheranChurch.com

Bible Study for Week of February 6-12, 2022

Read 1 Corinthians 14:12b-19 NRSV

Paul encourages people to seek spiritual gifts that will be valuable for building up the

community.

What are some of your gifts?

What are ways you use them to build up the community?

Read Luke 5:1-5 NRSV

Once while Jesus was standing beside the lake of Gennesaret, and the crowd was

pressing in on him to hear the word of God, he saw two boats there at the shore of the lake; the fishermen had gone out of them and were washing their nets. He got into one of the boats, the one belonging to Simon, and asked him to put out a little way from the shore. Then he sat down and taught the crowds from the boat. When he had

finished speaking, he said to Simon, “Put out into the deep water and let down your nets for a catch.” Simon answered, “Master, we have worked all night long but have caught nothing. Yet if you say so, I will let down the nets.”

What do you do when Jesus asks you to do something that doesn’t make sense?

Discuss these questions with us on Zoom on Wednesday, February 2, at 6:30 p.m. PST
