Follow the Light of Christ By Saint Augustine

Christ is the way to the light, the truth and the life

The Lord tells us: I am the light of the world; he who follows me will not walk in darkness, but will have the

light of life. In these few words he gives a command and makes a promise. Let us do what he commands

so that we may not blush to covet what he promises and to hear him say on the day of judgement: “I

laid down certain conditions for obtaining my promises. Have you fulfilled them?” If you say: “What

did you command, Lord our God?” he will tell you: “I commanded you to follow me. You asked for

advice on how to enter into life. What life, if not the life about which it is wri"en: With you is the

fountain of life?”

Let us do now what he commands. Let us follow in the footsteps of the Lord. Let us throw off the

chains that prevent us from following him. Who can throw off these shackles without the aid of the one

addressed in these words: You have broken my chains? Another psalm says of him: The Lord frees those in

chains, the Lord raises up the downcast.

Those who have been freed and raised up follow the light. The light they follow speaks to them: I am

the light of the world; he who follows me will not walk in darkness. The Lord gives light to the blind.

Brethren, that light shines on us now, for we have had our eyes anointed with the eye-salve of faith.

His saliva was mixed with earth to anoint the man born blind. We are of Adam’s stock, blind from our

birth; we need him to give us light. He mixed saliva with earth, and so it was prophesied: Truth has

sprung up from the earth. He himself has said: I am the way, the truth and the life.

We shall be in possession of the truth when we see face to face. This is his promise to us. Who would

dare to hope for something that God in his goodness did not choose to promise or bestow?

We shall see face to face. The Apostle says: Now I know in part, now obscurely through a mirror, but then

face to face. John the Apostle says in one of his le"ers: Dearly beloved, we are now children of God, and it has

not yet been revealed what we shall be. We know that when he is revealed we shall be like him, for we shall see

him as he is. This is a great promise.

If you love me, follow me. “I do love you”, you protest, “but how do I follow you?” If the Lord your

God said to you: “I am the truth and the life”, in your desire for truth, in your love for life, you would

certainly ask him to show you the way to reach them. You would say to yourself: “Truth is a great

reality, life is a great reality; if only it were possible for my soul to find them!”

Contemplating the Lord’s Passion

By St. Leo the Great

True reverence for the Lord's passion means fixing the eyes of our heart on Jesus crucified and

recognizing in him our own humanity.

The earth - our earthly nature - should tremble at the suffering of its Redeemer. The rock - the hearts of

unbelievers - should burst asunder. The dead, imprisoned in the tombs of their mortality, should come

forth, the massive stones now ripped apart. Foreshadowings of the future resurrection should appear

in the holy city, the Church of God: what is to happen to our bodies should now take place in our

hearts.

No one, however weak, is denied a share in the victory of the cross. No one is beyond the help of the

prayer of Christ. His prayer brought benefit to the multitude that raged against him. How much more

does it bring to those who turn to him in repentance.

Ignorance has been destroyed, obstinacy has been overcome. The sacred blood of Christ has quenched

the flaming sword that barred access to the tree of life. The age-old night of sin has given place to the

true light.

The Christian people are invited to share the riches of paradise. All who have been reborn have the

way open before them to return to their native land, from which they had been exiled. Unless indeed

they close off for themselves the path that could be opened before the faith of a thief.

The business of this life should not preoccupy us with its anxiety and pride, so that we no longer strive

with all the love of our heart to be like our Redeemer, and to follow his example. Everything that he

did or suffered was for our salvation: he wanted his body to share the goodness of its head.

Page 5: ï1 1 1 - Saint Agnes Catholic Church ·

1910 N. Randolph Street , Arlington, VA 22207 www.saintagnes.org

First of all, in taking our human nature while remaining God, so that the Word became man, he left no

member of the human race, the unbeliever excepted, without a share in his mercy. Who does not share

a common nature with Christ if he has welcomed Christ, who took our nature, and is reborn in the

Spirit through whom Christ was conceived?

Again, who cannot recognize in Christ his own infirmities? Who would not recognize that Christ's

eating and sleeping, his sadness and his shedding tears of love are marks of the nature of a slave?

It was this nature of a slave that had to be healed of its ancient wounds and cleansed of the defilement

of sin. For that reason the only-bego"en Son of God became also the son of man. He was to have both

the reality of a human nature and the fullness of the godhead.

The body that lay lifeless in the tomb is ours. The body that rose again on the third day is ours. The

body that ascended above all the heights of heaven to the right hand of the Father's glory is ours. If

then we walk in the way of his commandments, and are not ashamed to acknowledge the price he paid

for our salvation in a lowly body, we too are to rise to share his glory. The promise he made will be

fulfilled in the sight of all: Whoever acknowledges me before men, I too will acknowledge him before my Father

who is in heaven.

The Friar Servants of Mary (“Servites”) began in the early

1200s in Italy, when seven prosperous men of Florence

retreated to a nearby mountain, giving up their worldly

goods, to devote themselves to penance in the name of

Mary, the Mother of God. Over the years, they were joined

by others and became a community that was recognized by

the Bishop of Florence in about 1240 and by the Pope in

“Not as man sees does God see, because man sees the appearance

but the Lord looks into the heart.” 1Samuel 16:7

How often do we invest our time, talent and treasure in

creating an appearance that does not ma"er at all to God?

We strive to impress with our clothing, home, career, pos-

sessions, car and other marks of distinction. But none of

these illusions of greatness will impress God. Instead, He

will look into our hearts to see how much we loved Him,

how much we loved others and how we showed that love

by the way we used our time, talents and treasure here on

earth.

1304.

The order’s mission to Africa did not begin until 1938, in

the ecclesiastical Vicariate of Swaziland under the auspices

of the Tuscan Province. After the war, three American

Servites joined the African mission, and, over the last 80

years, the American Servites have expanded their mission

throughout the northeast corner of the Republic of South

Africa where it borders Swaziland and Mozambique.

Today, the Servites operate such well known missions as

of the Sanctuary of Our Lady of Sorrows, of the Star of the

Sea High School, and of the St. Alexis Mission.

This week, Brother Dennis and Associates are donating

$1800 to the American Servites for their support of the

African missions.
