“IDRP - AN INVESTMENT FOR THE FUTURE OF THE DENTAL RESEARCH FIELD”

The Standing Committee on Research and Education within IADS, is proud to announce the first international student led dental research exchange network which aims to transfer and foster research knowledge to the ones who desire to make a difference within their dental communities.

The students will attend research internships which consist of assisting a research project developed within the University member of the IDRP network. The internship takes place for about 2 – 8 weeks, the students being selected through a rigorous selection process and eventually having the facilities covered by the host university.

In 2011, universities from 16 countries entered the newly created network offering research destinations: Armenia, Bulgaria, Czech Republic, Egypt, France, Iran, Italy, India, Indonesia, Malaysia, Netherlands, Poland, Romania, Russia, Taiwan, Turkey. We formed a team of SCORE Local coordinators who are in charge of successfully implementing and assuring the continuity of the Program. The International Dental Research Program (IDRP) is what we would call an investment for the future of the dental research field. The today’s students who will benefit from the program by acquiring early research skills, might become the tomorrow’s research leaders who will push forward dentistry towards innovative and more successful treatments.

Description of the project:

The project is focused on tooth development and morphogenesis of tooth anlagen as wel l as related structures. I t is based on signal l ing, prol i ferat ion, programmed cel l death, d i fferent iat ion and redistr ibut ion of s ingle cel l populat ions wi th in the tooth pr imordia development. Al though regulat ion of tooth crown morphogenesis is wel l known and t issue engineer ing and tooth regenerat ion are becoming a real ist ic possibi l i ty, informat ion on proper morphogenet ic processes within tooth pr imordia, including prol i ferat ion, d i fferent iat ion, d istr ibut ion and deathof cel ls is st i l l incomplete. Hi therto studies on cel l prol i ferat ion concentrated as a rule on the region surrounding the enamel knot – a structure regarded as a s ignal l ing centre control l ing the shape of the future crown, and on the cervical loop, where the existence of stem cel ls is aff i rmed. Our prospect ive

research is focused on signal l ing wi th in tooth morphogenesis, prol i ferat ing processes and apoptosis in di fferent euther ians (pig, rept i les). The study is focused also on complete development of normodont dent i t ion using an unique pig model wi th aim to character ize i t as a sui table reference model of odontogenesis. This approach couldcontr ibute to the general izat ion of resul ts obtained from studies of h ighly special ized dent i t ion of laboratory rodents (mice, rats) . The resul ts could extend the current knowledge and contr ibute to the understanding of pr inciples and mechanisms of odontogenesis and to the explanat ion of evolut ion of mammal ian dent i t ion and adjacent orofacial structures. Current odontological research aims to analysis of cel l and molecularinteract ions, but also tends to integrate the knowledge in the general concept of t issues and organs to understand development,

homeostasis, d isorder of re latedcraniofacial structures and possible regenerat ion of per iodondal t issues. Therefore, the proposed research fol lows these strategies and covers topics f rom molecular invest igat ions up to broader appl icat ions.
