1. General truths

If + simple present + simple present

Ex: If you add two and two you get four

Note: in conditionals we use “Were” with all the subjects

2. Situations that are possible, but not certain

IF + SIMPLE PRESENT + WILL (may - might)

Ex: If I find your keys, I’ll give them to you

3. Imaginary situations in the present.

IF + SIMPLE PAST + WOULD/COULD

Examples:

* If I knew her number, I would be happy* If she were here, I would be happy

4. Imaginary situations in the past

IF + PAST PERFECT + WOULD HAVE + PAST PARTICIPLE

Examples:

* If I had seen her, I would have said hello

* She would have died in the accident if she hadn’t benn wearing her seat belt
