FRom the diRectoR

From the very beginning IIT Hyderabad

has emphasized research and

development. Today, R&D has become a

culture among the faculty and students

of IITH. This culture is evident from the

fact that IITH has nearly 25 sponsored

R&D projects ranging from ` 18 lakhs

to ` 18 crores; and these include several

international projects.

In short, this is the spirit of IITH; and it

all began when the first faculty joined

in August 2009. There are several

innovations hubs in the offing at IITH;

some of these are Cyber Physical Systems,

X-Materials, Nano Technology, Scientific

Computing, and Sensor Technology.

By August 2011, when IITH will enter

its fourth year of operation, it will have

nearly 800 students: approximately 500

undergraduates, 180 Masters and 120 PhD

students. The Institute will have 80 faculty

members spread across 11 departments.

The first batch of M.Tech.s will graduate

this summer and IITH will be holding its first

convocation sometime in September.

The faculty at IITH has been publishing

vigorously in leading international and

national journals and referred conferences.

Students, at all levels, are actively involved

in research. Moreover, IITH is having active

collaboration with industry. Some of

these are Dr. Reddy’s Laboratories, Tojym

Steel, Delphi, Neyveli Lignite Corporation,

BHEL, along with DRDO Laboratories, and

international industries like KDDI Japan.

IITH offers B.Tech. in four disciplines, M.Sc.

in Chemistry and Physics, M.Tech. in six

disciplines, and PhD in all the 11 disciplines.

In order to facilitate greater interaction

and collaboration with industries, IITH has

introduced a very novel system of fractional

credits – now one can offer courses having

0.5, 1.0, 1.5, 2.0, 2.5 or 3.0 credits. With

this flexibility industry leaders and researchers

can spend offer courses of variable duration

to suit state-of-the-art subject matter. Many

more innovations on the academic front are

in the offing.

One of the highlights of 2010-11 was the

address by the Former President Dr Abdul

Kalam on IITH Foundation Day. There was an

800-strong audience. The talk was preceded

by a student poster presentation. Dr Kalam

was most inspirational in his address and left

an indelible mark on the students to work

diligently and ethically.

The architecture work on the permanent

campus is in full swing. Innovative designs

are finalized for Phase 1a, consisting of three

academic departments, hostels, faculty and

staff housing, lecture hall complex and the

admin building. IITH will move into its own

campus in July 2013.

IITH has active collaboration with Japan on

infrastructure and research.

IITH is extremely thankful to Ordnance

Factory - Medak for providing a beautiful

campus while in transition, and the necessary

infrastructure to accommodate the students,

faculty, and some state-of-the-art research

laboratories. IITH is highly thankful to IITM

for providing the needed support, in her

quest towards excellence.

IIT Hyderabad will always strive to offer an

innovative environment, to aspire to reach

great heights in science and technology, and

an environment where one is not afraid to

experiment with high-risk ideas.

The Department of Mechanical Engineering has started mini-projects as a part of the B.Tech curriculum. The students are required to identify projects, carry out feasibility studies and cost evaluations. They are not allowed to use ready-made kits available in the markets; they have to buy individual components and assemble them to make prototypes. These mini-projects enable the students to explore and learn ideas and principles that cannot be achieved through classroom learning. A few of the project highlights executed by the 6th semester students are given below:

Obstacle ClimberPeople generally have difficulty transporting bulk materials, particularly up stairs / hills and rough terrain. The Institute students have designed a small transporter that can be guided to deliver moderate amounts of materials.

Liquid Cooling SystemGenerally computer systems are cooled using air-cooling blocks, which are bulky and require fans at higher RPMs as the cooling requirement increases. This leads to space and noise constraints in the system. A water-cooling system can increase the heat transfer, while also reducing the noise levels.

Multi-Fingered Robotic Hand After reviewing designs for robotic hand and fingers developed at various universities / research labs, the students have developed a working model shown in this picture.

Bipedal RobotThe aim of this project is to create the lower part of humanoid robot and achieve static locomotion. The picture shows the working model of the bipedal robot developed by the students.

innovAtive initiAtives

Vertical Axis Ocean Turbine

The technology for trapping tidal energy has not been explored significantly, and the aerodynamic study used for horizontal axis wind turbine has now been directly applied in this underwater turbine. The students have developed a scaled model of a vertical axis ocean turbine, in which the turbine and other mechanisms will be above the water level, while the blades remain submerged.

Digital IC Design and Verification

This course is offered to M.Tech (Microelectronics) students. Its contents have been prepared in consultation with researchers and industry. The course is taught by faculty from IITs, DA-IICT and experts from Xilinx-Hyderabad, who also set the examination papers and evaluate the students.

Wireless Sensor Networks This course gives a systematic introduction to the principles and design approaches of Wireless Sensor Networks (WSN). The students do a course project on WSN test beds, using Libelium WASP motes, Crossbow motes, Saha and IITH-motes. They also showcase their project work with poster presentations at an open-house workshop.

Summer Undergraduate Research FellowshipsTo inculcate a research culture in undergraduate students, the Institute has started a Summer Undergraduate Research Fellowship (SURF), under which they are given fellowship to carry out projects of their choice during summer at any institute in India, including IIT Hyderabad.

Fractional CreditsTo build stronger interactions with industries and visiting academicians, and to hone the technical skills of the PG and senior undergraduate students, IITH has introduced ‘fractional credit courses’ on highly specialized topics. Advanced technical and scientific knowledge is delivered by visiting academicians, technology developers from the industry and research organizations, as well as by IITH faculty. The course structure, including the content, credit and examination pattern, will be course- and instructor-specific and may have credits of 0.5, 1, 1.5, 2 and 3. The credits refer to the number of contact hours per week and will have 6, 12, 18, 25 and 40 lectures respectively.

e-Education Proof-of-Concept Trial at IITH by Sharp

Sharp Corporation, with the support of Sharp Software Development India (an overseas R&D Division) conducted a proof-of-concept trial for electronic education (e-education) in March 2011, in collaboration with IIT Hyderabad, under the Project for International Expansion of Advanced ICT Business (Ubiquitous Alliance Project) launched by the Ministry of Internal Affairs and Communications (MIC) of Japan.

A shortage of schools and teachers accompanying the demand has become a serious problem for higher education. To resolve these challenges, the development and adoption of electronic systems for education, as well as implementing remote e-education, is a requirement in India.

For quite some time, Sharp has been working on a joint industry-government-academia project with the MIC and the Waseda University Institute of Asia-Pacific Studies to explore ways to support a shift to electronic education systems in India. Sharp has provided an e-education system based on Sharp’s one-of-a-kind products, including e-textbooks (textbook content in digital format) on GALAPAGOS media tablets as well as interactive whiteboard touch screen LCD monitors.

In the proof-of-concept trial, the content of textbooks to be used in courses as well as curriculum information will be downloaded to the e-textbook terminals via a wireless (Wi-Fi) connection to a dedicated remote e-education server.

In addition, electronic whiteboards used during class instruction are displayed on the e-textbook terminals. Interactive classes can be conducted by using a microphone and speakers in combination with an electronic whiteboard connected to the remote e-education server even in classrooms where no teacher is present.

Sharp will continue to take positive steps towards making e-education a reality using it’s unique, one-of-a-kind products such as the GALAPAGOS media tablet and its interactive touch screen LCD monitors, and will help create an environment in which people all over the world can gain access to education on an equal basis.

Project for International Expansion of Advanced ICT Business (Ubiquitous Alliance Project’)

The Ministry of Internal Affairs and Communications (MIC) has been conducting its ‘Project for International Expansion of Advanced ICT Business’ since 2009. As part of this project, the current proof-of-concept trial is positioned as a model project (‘Ubiquitous Alliance Project’) targeting developing countries in three important areas of Information and Communications Technologies (ICT).

Together with accelerating international development activities in these three priority areas in the ICT field (digital broadcasting; next-generation IP networking and wireless technologies), the MIC is leading the world in carrying out advanced proof-of-concept trials in new fields that take full advantage of the advanced ICT infrastructure that Japan has to offer.

By working to promote education based on the advantageous use of ICT in India, the goal of the MIC is to strengthen global competitiveness of Japan’s ICT industries as well as reinforce the growth dynamic based on ICT through examining technical and system-related issues.

This is a research-cum-postgraduate teaching lab dealing with engineering optics. Currently digital photoelasticity and digital image correlation techniques are available for whole field stress and strain measurement. It is also equipped with a 16-channel strain gauging system useful for strain measurements. High-end workstations are also available to carry out numerical simulations.

Solid Mechanics Lab

This is an undergraduate teaching lab, at which various principles like bending, buckling, torsion, fatigue, deflection and contact mechanics are explained. Measurement of strain using gauges and material characterization is also taught. In total 14 experiments can be carried out.

IIT Hyderabad celebrated its 3rd Foundation Day on 30 March 2011. The Chief Guest, Dr APJ Abdul Kalam, former President of India, was enthusiastically received by the Institute’s faculty, students and their parents. About 50 school students from a nearby village – where IITH is engaged in NSS activity – also attended the program. A special poster session was organized by the faculty and students for Dr Kalam, who also gave an inspiring speech and interacted with them in a Q&A session. He urged the students to remain undeterred by failures, desist from comparing themselves with others, and develop their own uniqueness. He also stressed the need for focused work on convergence of technologies in bio-nano-info.

The logo of IIT Hyderabad (designed by Dr Uday Kumar, who has also designed the symbol of the Indian Rupee) was unveiled by Dr Kalam on the occasion. The students of IITH and nearby schools presented him with their paintings. Dr Kalam also gave away excellence awards to various students and faculty.

The program was presided over by Prof UB Desai (Director, IITH). Mr K Suresh Kumar, IAS (Secretary, Department of IT, Government of Kerala) also participated in the celebrations.

Technology Awareness Program for Rural Girl Children

A Technology Awareness Program was held at the Institute on 26 February 2011, to create technology awareness among rural school-going girl children in the age group of 12-18 years.

Targeted primarily at students of government schools, the program comprised a series of lectures on the importance of women’s education, computer awareness and communication technology.

The participants were also given practical demonstrations of video conferencing, Internet, email and chatting. They were also taken on a tour of the Electronics, Chemistry, Materials and Mechatronics labs of the Institute.

Student Activities

On 18 July 2010, Mr ESL Narasimhan, Governor of Andhra Pradesh, inaugurated the launch of ‘Information Network for Natural Disaster Mitigation and Recovery’, a five-year joint research project between India and Japan in the use of information and communications technology in natural disasters. The project will be jointly implemented by IIT Hyderabad, IIT Madras, IIT Kanpur, National Geophysical Research Institute (India), Indian Meteorological Department, University of Tokyo and Keio University (Japan).

Workshop on GPU-Based Computational Fluid DynamicsIn October 2010, the IITH faculty offered a first-of-its-kind-in-India course on Graphic Processing Unit (GPU) based computational fluid dynamics.

A GPU is an inherent component of every computer, but with the technological advances made in recent years, it has become much more powerful than the CPU, while also becoming cheaper. Also, a new computational environment called CUDA has been developed that promotes easy GPU programming for scientific computations. Several research groups have demonstrated significant speed-ups of scientific computations using a GPU over a CPU of equivalent cost. A cluster of GPUs can also be constructed to take advantage of further parallelism between individual GPUs. In addition, the power consumption of a GPU is much less than an equivalent CPU, thus providing economical computing. Simulations on a GPU also provide a new opportunity for research at the forefront of computational science and engineering, combining data parallel computations, numerical analysis and physical model development.

Women’s Day

International Women’s Day was celebrated at the Institute on 14 March 2011. The Chief Guest on the occasion was Padma Shri Prof Nabaneeta DevSen, an eminent literary writer and academic, and recipient of several awards including Sahiyta Akademi Award and Celli Award (from Rockefeller Foundation). The program began with Saraswati Vandana, followed by a welcome address by Prof UB Desai (Director, IITH). Prof DevSen then gave an interesting and insightful talk on education and empowerment of women, after which there was an interactive session with the audience. The program concluded with a Telugu song celebrating womanhood, presented by the women staff members of the Institute.

Inter-IIT Football Tournament

At the 46th Inter-IIT Football Tournament organized at IIT Delhi in December 2010, the IIT Hyderabad team acquitted itself creditably against the other teams, despite being only two years old.

Holi, a Riot of Colours

On 28 February 2011, Holi – the festival of colours – was celebrated by the students of IITH in all gaiety and fun. They prepared the ‘Holika Dahan’ bonfire (to celebrate the victory of Prahlada’s steadfast piety), followed by ‘Pujan’ and distribution of sweets.

Republic Day Celebrations

IITH students celebrated India’s 62nd Republic Day on 26 January 2011 by making colourful ‘Rangoli’ patterns and staging a drama highlighting corruption and its eradication.

Pan IIT-IITH Meet

A Pan IIT-IITH Meet was organized on 6 February 2011 at the Institute, which was attended by several alumni from across the country. Several games such as cricket, volleyball, carom, chess, badminton and basketball were held on the occasion. The IITH Cricket Team was captained by Prof UB Desai, the Director.

Onam Celebrations

The students of IIT Hyderabad celebrated ‘Onam’ – the traditional festival of Kerala – by making exquisite floral carpets called ‘Pookalam’ in the Institute premises. A banquet lunch was also arranged on the occasion.

NSS Work by IITH Volunteers

IIT Hyderabad has an active NSS Wing comprising over 70 volunteers, who make regular week-end visits to various government schools in the Institute’s vicinity to teach the students about Science & Technology, computers, communication skills, personality development, the value of education, hygiene and sanitation, etc.

‘Elan 2K11’ Celebrations

At ‘Elan 2K11’ – the annual technical and cultural festival of IITH – the students organized a ‘green workshop’, aimed at radically changing the way society thinks about waste.

They also organized a dance competition called ‘Danzennite’, in which students from all over the country took part. Another highlight was ‘Havikoro’, a special performance put up by an American song-and-dance group.

Biotech & Biomedical EngineeringBasant Kumar PatelThe research interests of Basant include investigation of molecular mechanism of generation of prions for their role in the pathogenesis of infectious neurodegenerative diseases like Creutzfeldt Jacob’s disease of human beings, Mad-cow diseases of cattle, etc. He is also exploring the causes of amyloid formation for their role in diseases like Alzheimer’s disease.

Renu John The goal of biomedical imaging is to provide structural and functional information and to visualize biological processes from the nanoscale, to the molecular, cellular and systems scale. Molecular imaging is expected to play an important role in oncology, e.g., by aiding the early detection of malignancies, locating metastatic disease, staging tumors, evaluating the availability of therapeutic targets, and monitoring the efficacy of treatment.

Renu aims to develop novel molecular contrast agents and mechanisms that can exploit the high sensitivity of interferometric optical imaging modalities. Novel nanoparticle-based probes can not only provide molecular contrast, but also would serve as agents for therapy and drug delivery applications. The nanoprobes at a cellular level can be exploited to study the biomechanical properties.

Saptarshi MajumdarMany newly developed specialized polymers are increasingly being applied for delivering drugs in more controlled and sustainable way. In this important area of application, Saptarshi is developing new methods and mechanisms to achieve ‘controlled, targeted and sustainable release of drugs’ with the help of specialized polymers. He is also investigating the fundamental forces between the polymer and drug molecules at various conditions.

Conventional polymers are currently facing a lot of issues related to the environment as well as their petro origin. Saptarshi’s research addresses these aspects by coming up with new grades of environment-friendly polymers and/or building knowhow of making biodegradable polymers with customized features for specific applications. The main focus is on building polymerization technology through modeling, optimization and lab scale implementation, and then optimally linking with rheology and processing with desired end use properties.

Narasimha MangadoddyNarasimha is currently involved in flow sheet development and process optimization for various mineral beneficiation plants. He studies Dense Medium Cyclones (DMC), Hydro-Cyclones (HC), slurry distributors, fluidized beds, and flotation devices for understanding the process by using computational modeling techniques (multi-phase CFD / coupling CFD-DEM models). New innovative / novel mineral processing equipment designs through integrated CFD / DEM studies and physical modeling is his major focus. He is also working on waste utilization / recovery of mineral matter from low-grade minerals and rejects.

Parag PawarParag is interested in developing a mechanistic understanding of patho-physiological processes occurring in the circulatory system. Specifically, his efforts are directed towards designing experimental and computational models to investigate the effect of hemodynamic forces, cell surface receptor-ligand interactions, and cytoskeletal reorganization on the processes of cell adhesion, deformation, and motility in the vasculature. This line of research will provide insights into the underlying fundamental processes responsible for diseases such as thrombosis, infection, inflammation, and cancer metastasis.

Civil EngineeringKVL SubramaniamSubramaniam’s research is focused on understanding the behavior of brick masonry, subjected to vertical and shear loading. Brick masonry is the most common building material used in India. A mechanistic understanding of the stress transfer and failure in the material is being developed using optical techniques such as digital image correlation, which will lead to better repair and strengthening in earthquake prone areas.

Sireesh SarideSireesh is currently researching on ‘Sustainable Reuse of Recycled Materials in Pavement Systems’. The advantages of utilizing recycled materials/byproducts in pavement system construction are numerous and the reduction in landfilling primarily promotes their usage. As a part of this study, Quarry Fines (QF), which are a residue deposit produced from limestone quarries, and reclaimed asphalt pavement (RAP) aggregates, obtained from milling existing hot mix asphalt (HMA) pavement layers were considered to promote the sustainable design of pavements. Numerical simulations

using FEM code were performed to predict the long term performance of the pavement sections. The figure alongside depicts the vertical stress distribution in both the pavement systems with recycled materials.

Tarun K PandaTarun’s ongoing research is on developing the homo- and hetero-multimetallic lanthanide complexes with novel P-N ligand systems, either by salt metathesis or amine elimination reactions.

The complete characterization and solid state structure determination reveals the details of bonding among the atoms associated with the complex. The proper understanding of the molecule leads to its catalytic application into various organic transformations.

M Deepa

The development of fast switching electrochromic (ec) coatings with amplified contrast ratios for high performance devices remains a formidable challenge. To this end, conducting polymer films are attractive electrochromes as they offer multiple colors, are cost-effective, and can be processed easily as they can be synthesized by a direct one-step route at room temperature itself. In this regard, Deepa is synthesizing some novel nanocomposites using poly(3,4-ethylenedioxypyrrole), which show remarkably enhanced electrochromic response and redox activity. The Mechanism of coloration-bleaching phenomena in these cells is unraveled from advanced electrochemistry experimentation.

The figure below shows generalized diffusion modeling using the ‘natural element’ method. The project was done in collaboration with Prof Dr-Ing. Habil Paul Steinmann, University of Erlangen-Nuremberg, Germany.

B UmashankarUmashankar’s research interests include Reinforced Soil, Soil-Structure Interaction and Foundation Engineering. He is presently working on developing a theoretical model that incorporates the effect of confining stress on the mobilized friction angle along the slip surface; this model can improve the existing design of tall retaining structures.

Umashankar is also involved in studying the effectiveness of geogrid reinforced granular bed as approach slab in reducing the differential settlement between the bridge deck and the approach slab.

Computer Science & EngineeringRavindra GuravannavarRavindra is currently working on performance optimization of database intensive application programs. His approach involves combining program analysis and transformation techniques with traditional cost-based query optimization.

Several optimizations are made possible by their techniques, e.g., (i) batching of parameters to reduce round-trip delays and allow efficient set-oriented plans, and (ii) asynchronous submission of queries to the backend database. Ravindra is also exploring data management requirements for disaster mitigation and recovery applications.

Tamma Bheemarjuna ReddyBheemarjuna is interested in Greening Information and Communication Network Infrastructure. It is predicted that very soon machine loading in buildings (servers, desktops, laptops, and communication network equipments) will contribute a major portion of carbon emissions in buildings.

Bheemarjuna is therefore working to design novel architectures and wired / wireless communication protocols for achieving energy-efficient computation and communication. He is also developing intelligent transportation systems by applying Information and communication technologies in order to improve commuters travel convenience and reduce high pollution levels in Indian cities.

Ashudeb Dutta

Ashudeb’s research focuses on concurrent radio architecture that provides a convenient method of transmitting and receiving two or more frequencies at the same time without a linear increase in the hardware and eliminating the need of dynamic system control. Ashudeb is designing low-power low-cost robust concurrent multi-band LNA for popular standards in the communication market over the range of 800MHz-3GHz such as GSM900/ DCS1800/ Bluetooth.

In micro-scale solar energy harvesting systems, the design of efficient energy conversion unit and accurate maximum power point tracking unit becomes a tremendous challenge due to area constraint and very low (~µW) output power. Ashudeb’s research focuses on designing a novel MPPT tracking method including a charge pump based DC-DC converter for extracting energy from a tiny single PV cell (open circuit voltage ~0.4V).

MathematicsCS SastryFor data that can be sparsely generated, one can obtain good reconstructions from reduced number of measurements – thereby compressing the sensing process rather than the traditionally sensed data. A wealth of recent developments in applied mathematics, by the name of ‘Compressive Sampling Theory’ (CST) aim at achieving this objective.

The present work of Sastry deals with designing the dictionaries that provide sparse representation of data. His research also goes into computed tomography, manifold learning methods. He is also working on manifold learning methods and running a seminar series on ‘Compressive Sampling Theory and Applications’.

Balasubramaniam JayaramBala is working on the properties a distance measure should possess so as to avoid the ‘Curse of Dimensionality’ phenomenon, whose effects are seen when one deals with high dimensional spaces, often leading to ‘instabilities’ or convergence to sub-optimal solutions.

He is also currently carrying out an algebraic study of ‘Fuzzy Implication Functions’ in a comprehensive manner, to analyze the algebraic structures that can be imposed on this set.

Amrita DebAmrita’s research interest lies in the area of positive psychology. She has been working on ‘psychological resilience’, specifically on ‘resilience and mental health, and protective factors in resilience’. She is currently focusing on the relationship between personality variables and gratitude intervention techniques, and their effect on well being. The IIT Hyderabad campus, which is about 580 acres in area, will be developed in a phased manner.

Phase 1a is expected to be over by July 2013. IIT Hyderabad will start functioning from the new campus from Academic Year 2013-14.

The projected strength by the end of Phase 1a is:

Apoorva is currently working on two broad areas of Biological Physics:

•Evolutionary Genetics: The team is studying the effect of mutator cells on evolution. Their initial work has shown the possibility of a new kind of steady state in which the population goes into a phase where all individuals are mutators.

•Protein Production: The team is addressing the effect of mRNA decay on protein translation. It has shown that in prokaryotic organisms, protein production is significantly affected by mRNA decay and our model explains certain trends observed in experiments, like the production of fewer proteins by longer mRNAs.

V KanchanaKanchana’s present research focus is mainly on structural intermetallics for high-temperature applications. Mechanical properties of these intermetallic compounds have been calculated using First-principles density functional calculations.
