IHS Technology Strategy Is To Support

21st Century Education

To meet 21st century education objectives,

Immaculate High School must continue to

introduce new ways of teaching that fully

engage students and support active learning,

collaboration, problem based work and other

21st century skills. These teaching

approaches must extend throughout the

entire school.

2012-13 school year is a transition year Flipped Classroom Support and Implementation Media Tech Center Design to support Flipped classroom

and student social media Professional Development for faculty 2012-2013 goals Updating of desk tops in library and computer labs

Need flexibility and openness to new technologies Curriculum Development and Professional Development E-textbook availability Faculty Adoption of technology and electronic curriculum Vulnerability to network hacking Student Misuse of Technology Cost of new Router etc.

Wireless Infrastructure running very smoothly Deployed new ios device application Implemented cloud based data backup and recovery for

servers Implementing myimmaculatehs.org domain for student email

after midterms Holding in migrating teacher email to gmail til summer break Built the first Screencasting integrated system for teacher

utilization of flipped classroom. Implementing student technology “helpdesk” Implementing student/faculty technology council Technology actual spend is trending better than budget Soliciting alumni feedback for Media Tech center

Continue implementation of student email Continue with short and long term IT needs Continue with development of electronic curriculum and

elearning/online programs Continue implementation of tools and support for flipped

classroom

21st Century Education and Learning

• Education: How to process and use info

and less about imparting it…factual mastery less

important when you can access entire library on a mobile device

• Dynamic Learning: Where students

demonstrate content mastery instead of

passive listening …students are more collaborative

and teachers more engaging

Page 11: Immaculate High School€¦ · Immaculate High School’s mission in the Roman Catholic tradition is to foster the development of the whole student. Immaculate High School nurtures

Collaboration- students are teachers too

• Keep asking questions and work together to

find the best solutions

• Open to new ways and changing old rules

• Continue to engage ALL constituents through

Next Steps

• Transform library to Media Tech center

– give teachers place to create virtual classes

– give students place to work with digital media

– establish student help desk center

• Focus on learning and engagement

• It is not about the device…

it is about 21st Century learning

be an alignment of

technology with learning

objectives and vision, not the

other way around

What was IHS out to accomplish with this

effort?

Increased student engagement in learning

Widespread adoption and use of mobile technology,

providing instant access to information

Creating a teaching and learning environment that

goes beyond the traditional classroom

Enhancing creative and critical thinking through

the development and use of interactive teaching

strategies

Upgrading textbooks to those that are more

interactive and usually less expensive

Where are we now?

• In the classroom, the iPad is being used for:

– instructional reinforcement

– immediate and authentic information gathering

– interactive presentations and more.

• Faculty and students report that they appreciate the iPad

for its convenience and portability, and that they use it

for communication, information gathering, note taking,

reading, interactive work, and “staying connected”.

• Students reported believing that the iPad has had a

positive effect on their organization.

Next Steps

• There is no end…it is an ongoing process of

continuous improvement and positive

discontent

• End of year differentiated PD led by faculty

IHS Technology Strategy Is To Support

21st Century Education

To meet 21st century education objectives,

Immaculate High School must continue to

introduce new ways of teaching that fully

engage students and support active learning,

collaboration, problem based work and other

21st century skills. These teaching

approaches must extend throughout the

entire school.

Four Values Govern IHS Tech

Strategy Development• Stakeholder Involvement: decisions will involve as many key

stakeholders as possible and will be made collectively

• Professional Development: teachers and other leaders receive

training on new pedagogies and how to apply them, as well as

training on technology based learning tools.

• Continual Reinforcement: ongoing training, mentoring,

professional learning communities (PLCs), assessment tools,

and other mechanisms continually reinforce 21st century

pedagogy and technology

• Alignment with Curriculum: curriculum gives the teachers the

opportunity to apply and become proficient in new tools and the

technology that supports it. Collaboration, project-based learning,

inquiry based learning and reciprocal learning become part of the

DNA of the school.

Page 53: Immaculate High School€¦ · Immaculate High School’s mission in the Roman Catholic tradition is to foster the development of the whole student. Immaculate High School nurtures

1 Short Year Ago…..

• A very long way from achieving our strategy,

mission, vision and values

• No student phones or tablets were allowed in

school

• Curriculum was traditional textbook based

• Internet access for students was allowed via

desktop computers in computer lab and library

only

• Teachers had desktops/laptops hardwired in each

classroom

• Antiquated wireless infrastructure available in

approx 30% of the school

• Single, unstable internet connection via cable

modem for all staff and students

Page 54: Immaculate High School€¦ · Immaculate High School’s mission in the Roman Catholic tradition is to foster the development of the whole student. Immaculate High School nurtures

Original Wireless Infrastructure

Upper Level Wireless Coverage

-Only one classroom had full signal coverage (314)

-Most classrooms had no coverage or partial/weak coverage

Infrastructure Implementation Plan

Infrastructure

Replace the existing out of

date wireless LAN

infrastructure with an up to

date infrastructure to support

all students, faculty and

administrator’s devices

while maximizing the

geographic coverage within

the school.

Make sure we have enough

COVERAGE & DENSITY to

support teaching and learning

Q. What is MDM?

A. MDM software secures, monitors,

manages and supports mobile devices

deployed across an enterprise

All MDM’s are not created equal!!

…also other 3rd party vendors

Phase II – Ongoing Cost Considerations

• Ongoing costs are very site specific depending on

current organizational structure and site resources

• Ongoing cost considerations

– Will you need external support to ensure uptime on a

more active network?

– Do you have the Human Capital IT resources needed

to support students and teachers with the addition of

devices?

– Will you have an increase in internet access costs?

– Staff additions and replacement iPad costs?

– Filtering/MDM/Software increases?

Additional ongoing costs: $27,000

Textbooks…the BIG Question

• Transition year (2012-2013)

- hybrid (some hardcover & some e-texts)

- texts purchased individually by students

- Pearson Publishing developed

custom site(s) to accommodate

individual purchases (pricing, college

level texts 1yr vs semester, etc)

- several different providers (Pearson

Private schools, HMH Fuse Common
